Night and
Fog
(1956)
9★
"Though a short film at 35
minutes, its immediate impact is sobering. One thing that hit me
hardest was the rooms filled with personal affects, glasses, shoes,
clothes, and human hair. The Nazis, in their model of efficiency,
used a massive room full of human hair to make rugs. Rugs. This film
is often referred to as the greatest French film ever made, and it
certainly is one of the best documentaries made." |

The Natural
(1985)
10★
"There is something so grand about this fictitious story of a
great baseball
player who nobody ever heard of. There is a throw-back atmosphere as
we once again visit old ballparks around the USA. The whole
affair drips of nostalgia. Redford is flawless as the underdog
Roy Hobbs. You don't have to be sports fan to enjoy this classic
film... because courage, determination, true love and triumph of the human
spirit are universal themes." |

 |
Son
of Frankenstein
(1939)
9★
"This intelligent, completely
entertaining sci-fi film covers a lot, makes you think, and knows
what it is: an impossible love story. It's plot is hard to explain,
and that is why it works so well. The viewer is asked to fill in the
blanks, based on an incomplete set of facts. It eventually gets
where it's going, but is is like savoring a great slice of
cheesecake one fork at a time." |

 |
Fright Night
(1985)
9★
"Just
when it appeared that the vampire genre was completely worn out,
this little gem appears... The effects are amazing, as is the story.
Kudos to veteran actor Roddy McDowall as Vincent, and Chris Sarandon, as
the best vampire since Bela Lugosi." |

 |
Son
of Frankenstein
(1939)
7★
"This horror sequel is the last time Karloff would don the
monster's incredible make-up and costume. After this film, many
others would play the role in films of lesser quality. It is
Bela Lugosi, however, who gives perhaps the performance of his
macabre career. As Ygor, a maimed humpback, he breathes true
evil into the film's vengeful villain, who is determined to restore
the creature to life. He does, after all, needs a proxy to carry out
the murders of those responsible for his hanging" |

 |
American
Hustle
(2013)
9★
"This
film, with a banging 70's soundtrack, has such a classy mood that
you almost forget it's a movie. Each character drips of something:
caution, sexuality, neglect, ambition - they're all damaged goods
either searching for respect or a way out. The confrontation between
Lawrence and Adams is one for the ages; my mouth was hanging open.
The whole thing builds, and we feel something bad just has
to happen to one, if not all, of our seedy quasi-criminals... and
that is the fun of it." |
| 10-6-25 |
 |
The Bride
of Frankenstein
(1935)
10★
"With the original film,
director James Whale gave us a monster unlike any other. With
the sequel, he offers a better blend of horror and cynical
humor. The result is one of the best Universal monster
productions ever made. It's scary, funny, outrageous, and
exciting. It also appealed to a much larger audience. Karloff
returns as the monster, and the wonderful Elsa Manchester makes
her brief appearance as his wide-eyed, terrified bride." |

 |
28 Days Later
(2002)
9★
"As
hard as it may be to believe, this is the first zombie film to
feature fast-moving zombies, and the impact is quite terrifying.
However, this well-done feature gives the audience heart-stopping
suspense sandwiched between genuine moments of character-building.
The two leads, Murphy and Harris, are wonderful, and Irishman
Brendan Gleeson lends a great supporting performance." |
| 9-22-25 |
 |
Coco
(2017)
9★
"This delightful, colorful
Latino-based film explores death, and many more very adult topics
such as: the impact a missing father can have, old grudges and the
damage they do, and the importance of pursuing your heart's dream,
regardless of the many naysayers. Yet, children will love it, too.
The Pixar animation, once again, out-does itself. The choice to zip
up and infuse brightness, and life, into the land of the dead was
brilliant." |
| 9-8-25 |
 |
The Three Burials of
Melquiades Estrada
(2005)
10★
"This
marked Tommy Lee Jones' first hand at directing, and it's a stellar
effort. What I noticed most was the attention spent on all the
little moments: Tender flashbacks between friends, the odd encounter
with the blind man, and the scene sitting in the uneventful Mexican
bar. There is a richness on display here that perhaps only someone
who grew up in a Southern border state can appreciate, but I think
it is broader than that." |
| 9-1-25 |
 |
Gettysburg (1993)
10★
"This is a very well-done historical epic recreating one of the
most pivotal battles in American
history. The viewer is asked to take in all the
pieces that had to come together for this battle to occur. It is all
there: Devil's Den, Little Roundtop, Pickett's charge." |
| 8-25-25 |
 |
Some Like It Hot
(1959)
9★
"It
really wasn't fair to Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Here they give
incredible performances, acting as male and female characters
(Lemmon was nominated for Best Actor, Curtis should have been).
They're incredibly funny as two cross-dressing mob band members on
the sly. But neither could hold a candle to Marilyn. She's
captivating. She sings. She's funny. She's sexy - They never had a
chance." |
| 8-18-25 |
 |
Taxi
Driver (1976)
9★
"Martin Scorsese takes us on a semi-dreamlike ride into the
scum-crusted, wet streets of New York City. For all its glam and
glitter, this place has an underbelly where common folk are
ground up and spit out. From this cauldron rises Travis Bickle,
a person sleepwalking through an existence absent of meaning.
From the start, we feel this story is heading to ruin." |
| 8-11-25 |
 |
Rush in Rio
(2003)
10★
"This
concert film is triumphant, as the band wrapped up the Vapor Trails
tour, because they had been through emotional hell with devastating
personal losses. This was the perfect pairing of a band that had
clawed back to tour again, and a South American country that
exploded when their beloved Rush stopped in for the first time ever.
In São Paulo, they played for 60,000 rabid fans in a soccer stadium." |
| 8-4-25 |
 |
Princess
Mononoke (1997)
9★
"If you enjoyed Dorothy's
journey in Oz, or Charlie's adventure in Willie's factory, then this
amazing fantasy fare might be right up your alley. Director/Writer
Miyazaki creates such incredible visuals that, at first, you might
be overwhelmed. This quest through Japanese mythology, where demons
and forest gods hold considerable power over humans, plays like a
Greek tragedy." |
| 7-28-25 |
 |
The Fantastic Four: First
Steps
(2025)
9★
"As
Marvel films ushers in a new Phase, their first offering reflects
some wise choices... There is a perfect blend of humor and action,
the actors were stellar, and the ending leaves us wanting more. You
can't ask for more than that." |
| 7-21-25 |
 |
Midsommar (2019)
7★
"To this day, I have this
strange internal fear of doomsday cults and secret pagan societies,
lurking under the radar, snagging innocents for their bloody
rituals. This film creates palpable dread as we watch a young adult
vacation quickly turns into something totally unexpected, and
unexplainable. It is very terrifying." |
| 7-14-25 |
 |
Superman
(2025)
9★
"As
expected, it is packed with action, special effects, and thrilling
scenes. What really surprised me was the careful attention paid to
the tender moments that help the viewers see the human side of an
alien being who possesses enough power to, frankly, scare
people. The moments with his pooch Krypto, Lois and his parents
are truly heart-rending. The most important aspect is that this film
gets the essence of Superman right - no matter what, he will not
kill - EVER." |
| 7-7-25 |
 |
Brokeback
Mountain (2005)
10★
"This
complex, unconventional love story painfully illustrates the jagged
edge these rugged men had to walk if they dared show their true
feelings. Ledger and Gyllenhaal deliver incredible performances
under Ang Lee's sensitive direction. The film won three Oscars,
including Best Director and Best Score." |
| 6-30-25 |
 |
Inside Out 2
(2024)
9★
"All
of us who experienced children through those darn teen years really
want to understand that ordeal better, and we really want to know
more about dear Riley. This film hits those notes like a hockey
slap-shot. The addition of new emotions adds to the hilarity, as
Riley feels the pressures of meeting new friends, and balancing her
existing relationships." |
| 6-23-25 |
 |
As Good
As it Gets (1994)
10★
"How the hell does Jack Nicholson do it? He takes a character,
who is an completely unlikable, neurotic chauvinist; and by the movie's end... you love him!
This film centers on the acting chops of Nicholson
and Hunt who won both Academy and Golden Globe awards for
Best Actor/Actress. Greg Kinnear also stands out as a gay artist
having a bad run of luck." |
| 6-16-25 |
 |
How to Train Your Dragon
(2010)
9★
"There's
also a loveable cadre of teenage Vikes who strive to be the best dragonslayers.
However, for me, the core of this film is a broken relationship
between a father and his son. Once again, DreamWorks has put forth a
delightful, high-quality children's film. It also should resonate
with many adults, especially fathers who might have been too hard on
their sons." |
| 6-9-25 |
 |
When a
Man Loves a Woman (1997)
8★
"This was not the film I thought it would be. It was
completely mis-marketed as
a romance. The performances by Ryan and
Garcia are top-notch! It is one of the best films about
addiction, recovery, and how hard it is for addicts to reinsert
themselves back into their old life." |
| 5-19-25 |
 |
The Full Monty
(1997)
10★
"Some of the
greatest comedies are spawned from the most unlikeliest
of subjects. By all accounts, unemployed British men
should not be funny, yet it is. I mean, we got garden
gnomes, folks. This is a huge tribute to some fine
direction, and a solid script. There are also great
performances through-out, leads to supporting cast. It
truly is a dream ensemble. There are laughs throughout, and, trust me, the film's
fully-gratifying ending will be one you won't soon
forget." |
| 5-12-25 |
 |
Robin Hood (1973)
9★
"To say they don't make
films like this anymore is an understatement. The animation is
pristine, the musical numbers are lovely, and the script is tight
and funny. This family favorite will entertain even the fussiest
child. Put it on and enjoy Disney at its best!" |
| 5-5-25 |
 |
The Purple Rose of Cairo
(1985)
9★
"This
premise alone should blow your mind, as the fantastical tale rockets
onward, exploring the concepts of love and heartbreak. This is
Cecilia's story - a meek woman, caught in-between two realities,
determined to find her true strength in a life of hardships. Farrow
is captivating, and Jeff Daniels does a nice job playing the dual
roles of Tom Baxter and Gil Shepherd, the actor who portrays him.
This magical story says a lot about our big screen heroes juxtaposed
to people in the real world - and it leaves it up to us to decide
which is better or worse." |
| 4-28-25 |
 |
Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
10★
"This incredibly unique
cinematic triumph bends reality to intelligently show us the ups and
downs of a romantic relationship; the vulnerability of the human
psyche; and the faint possibility that sometimes an imperfect love
is still worth everything." |
| 4-14-25 |
 |
Into the Wild
(2007)
9★
"This
film's brilliance is that it's not selling an agenda. It simply, and
quite beautifully, documents the evolution of a free spirit. We see
contrasted the romantic harmony of nature's beauty, against the
brutality of life as a vagabond, always hungry, and overwhelmed by
nature's power. Since we, the audience, also encounter Christopher's
life, we have to be prepared to feel heartbreak as well. However,
the lessons gained are worth that cost." |
| 4-7-25 |
 |
American
Fiction (2023)
8★
"There is a lot going on with
Monk: the marketing of his gansta-novel, his sibling relations, his
mother's onset of Alzheimer's, and his romantic exploits. Yet all
are woven together perfectly. I was also surprised at how many times
I laughed out loud - this is a testament to a fantastic script and
the wonderfully complex lead portrayal by Jeffrey Wright. If you are
White Like Me, or not, this drama is worth your consideration." |
| 3-31-25 |
 |
Deadpool & Wolverine
(2024)
7★
"It
is such a pleasure to see Jackman back as Wolverine. He dependably
gives his all as a version of the character, who, in his universe,
failed to be the hero we expect. Ryan Reynolds is likewise
entertaining as Deadpool (aka The Merc with the Mouth),
wise-cracking and gorily eviscerating foes all day long. Throw in a
ton of multi-verse Marvel second-tier cameos and we got us a film!
The special effects are amazing, as are the many (and I mean almost
too many) fight scenes..." |
| 3-23-25 |
 |
Poor
Things (2023)
8★
"This unique film is a
wonderful, beautiful mess of all sorts and homages. You will cringe,
then burst out laughing. There is gore, wonder, and finally a sense
of awakening. The stark imagery and slightly-skewed aesthetics only
heighten the film's appreciation. You won't be able to watch this
without experiencing a plethora of emotions." |
| 3-16-25 |
 |
Touch of Evil
(1958)
9★
"That
ugliness is very lifeblood of film noir. This film is
masterfully directed and shot, with lots of film "tricks" employed
by (director Orson) Welles' keen visual eye. There are long tracking
shots (Namely the Hitchcockian opening 3 minutes, as we slowly
follow a car with a ticking bomb in the trunk), sweat-filled
close-ups, dank shadow-filled rooms filled with seedy street
urchins." |
| 3-9-25 |
 |
The Menu (2022)
8★
"This film introduced
me to Anya Taylor-Joy, and, wow, what an actress. She stands
toe-to-toe with veteran actor Ralph Fiennes. This mind field of
revenge and obsessions will shock you, thrill you, and completely
entertain you, each course more delicious than the last." |
| 2-17-25 |
 |
About Time
(2013)
9★
- A little late, but a superb romantic comedy...
"This
time-warping treasure is simple, sweet, and thought provoking. I
kept waiting for something bad to occur, as is the case in nearly
all time-travel films, but not here, thankfully. Our protagonist is
the awkward Tim, who just can't figure out the opposite sex. Then
his father, on this 21st birthday, drops the bomb that the men in
his family can travel back in time. What!?" |
| 2-10-25 |
 |
The Civil
War (1990)
10★
"I love history,
particularly our history, and this 10-hour, highly-acclaimed
mini-series. Ken Burns and his team of filmmakers/historians
masterfully intertwined over 16,000 photographs/paintings, excerpts
from letters and journals of the time, period music/sound effects,
and some of the best voices in American film. All this culminates in
a detailed retelling of the most important four years in America." |
| 2-3-25 |
 |
Here
(2024)
9★
"Start
filming in, say, 30,000 B. C., and take us to current day.
After some serious editing, this spot will have generated quite a
collection of tales. There will be multiple tenants: dinosaurs,
deer, native peoples, colonials, inventors, returning soldiers, new
families, all with their time accounted for; their stories told." |
| 1-20-25 |
 |
Oppenheimer (2023)
10★
"This is a story, often
only a few paragraphs in history books, best told using an in-depth,
smart and visceral film. It details the origins of atomic theory,
the determined scientists, the desperate military leaders, the
governmental pressures - all to culminate in a world-changing event.
It is a moment in our nation's past that is truly incredible, yet
simultaneously horrible - the advent of nuclear fission." |
| 1-13-25 |
 |
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
(2024)
9★
"In
a post-apocalyptic world of utter madness, George Miller once again
cobbles together some of the best storytelling on big screens today.
It's bombastic, heart-wrenching, and thoroughly enjoyable to watch.
Every scene is choreographed like the finest Sydney Ballet, and the
cinematography is breathtaking. It delivers in every moment." |
| 1-6-25 |
 |
Modern Times (1936)
10★
"As "talkies" hit
screens, and the Industrial Revolution changed America, Director
Chaplin gives us some biting prophetic wisdom about too much
technology and greedy corporations treating their employees like
machine cogs. He also interweaves a delightfully sweet romance
between two vagabond tramps destined to be together." |
