|
Notes: |
-
Bill Thompson was from
Alabama.
His full name may have been James William Martin Thompson.
-
Interestingly,
Minerva's death certificate (I have a copy on file) lists her
father's birth place as Holland, and there is no information on her
mother's maiden name or birth place. This causes me to wonder if
Minerva was adopted, or was brought into the union by Sarah (her
daughter to a previous suitor).
-
William (hunting
stock), Minerva (keeping house), and Francis M. are listed in the 1870 LampCtyTX
Census.
-
From Rose Piñon via
email, I learned
that Gabe Thompson had a common-law marriage to Manuela "Nellie" VILLESCAS.
In 1910 he was listed as a restaurant cook in Yeso, Chavez Co, NM.

Joseph Leland "Lee" eventually left Virginia, and moved to
Arkansas. There he met and married Sarah "Sallie" CLARK. She was a
petite, 90 pound, 14-year-old girl at the time.
-
From Sara (Clark)
Straley's death announcement in the Lampasas Daily Leader, Vol 9, No
3371, Ed. 1, Tuesday, Oct 15, 1912.
Mrs. Lee Straley Dead.
Mrs. Sara Straley died at her home in the northern part (of)
this county Monday morning at the age of 82 years. She settled in
this county with her husband in 1856, and has resided here
continuously since that date. The husband still lives, as do
four sons, Joe, Sam, John and Tom Straley, and two daughters,
Mesdames Wm. Thompson and F. D. Richardson. The body was
buried at the Straley cemetery. The surviving relatives have
universal sympathy.

The Lampasas Leader
Lampasas Texas, Friday, September 24, 1920, No. 47
HIS 100th BIRTHDAY
J. L. Straley of Adamsville, Texas,
commonly known as "Uncle Lee", ate his one hundredth birthday dinner
in hi sroom at the home of his son, S. H. Straley, Sept 21, 1920.
About 150 relatives and friends had a very enjoyable spread outside
in the shade.
"Are you fixing to make a monkey show out of me?" was what he asked
when they were helping him dress a little different for the
occasion. But his part was very quiet. He remembered some of the
friends, but recognized very few. His dinner was served by his
daughter, Julia Richardson, the he did his sleeping as usual.
Uncle Lee was born in Giles Co., Virginia, in a farm home. When he
was 7 years of age his parents move to Illinois. Soon his mother
died, then the father bound the children out for five years, then
cared for them himself. During the Black Hawk War, Black Hawk
himself came to the river on the opposite side of their home and the
swollen river prevented further progress in devastation. The family
moved to Arkansas and from there to Texas in 1838.
In 1844, Mr. Straley married Sarah Clark. After living a while in
Red River, Hunt, Lamar, Hays, Bastrop, and Burnet counties, he came
to Lampasas Co. about 1859.
He has six children living, forty grandchildren and fifty-three
great-grandchildren.
Mr. Straley freighted some, was a stock man then a farmer. He has
been a member of the church for about fifty-five years and his
friends give a good work about his character.
Among the friends at the dinner were:
Jasper Chambers, 91; Tom Stanley, 88; Mrs. Tom Stanley, 81; V. Mace,
81; Mike W. Hampton, 81; Mrs. M. P Hatley, 77; Mrs H. T. Hill, 77;
B. F. Gholson, 77; C. P. Bain, 76; H. T. Hill, 76; J. F. White, 76;
T. J. Franks, 74; Mrs. C. P. Bain, 72; Mrs. T. N. Caskey, 72; Mrs.
G. F. Gholson, 72; B. P. Mitchell, 70; Dick Huling, 70; A. B.
Chambers, 70; G. B. Carter, 68; Mrs. M. E. Persons, 68; J. N.
Trussell, 67; C. C. Carter, 66; F. C. Fowler, 69; Mr. F. C. Fowler,
62; T. H. Thompson, 62; Will Ross; Ned Carter, 57.
-
Lee and Sallie moved to Fannin County, Texas. Lee sat on the
first jury held in Fannin County in 1837. They lived for a while in
Yokum, TX where he was a freighter, with four yoke of oxen, hauling
lumber from ports on the Gulf of Mexico. They later moved to Marble
Falls in Burnet Co. TX, where they lived with General Edward
BURLESON and wife (At one time, Leland was also personal friends
with General Albert Sidney JOHNSON and Sam HOUSTON.). They next
moved to San Marcos in Hayes County, TX. Then finally to Lampasas
County, TX.
-
Joseph was a 2nd Lt.
Confederate Army, Texas Frontier Dist. in the Civil War.
-
Their sons were given the names of famous American heroes or
ancestors. Their daughters were named after Roman women or
goddesses.
-
Leland Straley donated
land for the Straley School, the Baptist Church and
Straley Cemetery.
He and his wife and many Straleys are buried there. His original home still stands and many Straleys
still
live in the Lampasas, Texas area.
-
Lee died just 10 days
shy of his 101st birthday. His death certificates says he was born
in Giles County, VA. It also states that his father's name was "Charles
M. Straley" from Virginia. I have this document on file. He is
buried at
Straley Cemetery,
LampCtyTX.
