  • (Information from of Dinah Moses.)
I am a decendent of Joseph Leland Straley's son Sam Huston Straley. Sam married Frances Bain and they had a son, Carl, and three daughters:  Edith and Ann; both died without heirs. My father was the only child of Violet Straley and Clarence Moses. I am one of three daughters of James Allen Moses. My great Uncle Carl had one son Carl, Jr. who died when he was in his early 30's and left a wife and 2 daughters. She moved to California and I have not been able to locate my two cousins. My grandmother Violet was the Straley historian and wrote an accounting of the 100th anniversary of the Straley's in Texas. In that account she said Jacob Straley arrived on the ship Main, from Frankfort, Germany (the same as you stated in your message. A search of the history of Giles County, VA (formerly WV) shows the settlement of Jacob Straley (Strahle) who came to this country from the City of Frankfort-on-the-Main, Germany.

I do remember summers (hot as they were) on the banks of Simms Creek on Papapa's farm near Adamsville outside of Lampasas (Texas). We used to drive from Alexandria, Virginia every year (before AC and Interstates and it took us a hot week of driving). Sam Huston and his wife were 103 and 105 when they died and I remember them well. Papapa would terrify us with some pretty wild stories relating to the settlement of that area. Grandaddy Moses always had to strap on his six-shooter (at least he told us it was a six-shooter) so we could play outside because there were so many rattlesnakes (especially in the storm cellar).
