Straley is listed on his report of death as a suicide. The following article is from the Lampasas Daily Leader, Vol. 4, No. 935, Ed. 1, Thursday, March 14, 1907. The neighborhood was shocked Friday evening by the news of Jack Straley killing himself.  There was no one on the place except he and his mother at the time.  He shot himself in the head with a shot gun and only lived about an hour.  He never spoke to any one and no cause is known why he should have taken his own life.  He was about 40 years old and was raised here, where he was highly respected by everybody.  He leaves a wife and seven children, father and mother, four brothers and two sisters to mourn his demise.  The burial took place Saturday evening.  John Straley, a brother who lives at Oplin, Callahan county, arrived here in time for the funeral. Tom Straley, who lives at Sterling City, did not reach here until Saturday night.  May Brother Straley's spirit be greeted by the loves ones when that last roll is called up yonder.  May God bless his dear wife and children, and his aged parents, in their affliction.  Bro. Barb of Lometa conducted the funeral services.
