James M. Popnoe was of
French ancestry. Some believe this middle name was "William". He
could not read or write. -
Susan (Watts) Popnoe
is buried at
Silver Valley Cemetery,
ColeCtyTX. Mattie Popnoe McKenzie, on
C. C. Popnoe's death certificate states that Susan Watts was born in
Jasper County, TX. Her parents were Thomas Watts (b. Ireland) and
-
The following information comes from Joy (Hancock) Vasquez, Allen Don Davis,
Mary Ann Woodward, and Gordon Sloan:
James William (the "William" is traditional, some say M. for Marion)
Popnoe, Sr. emigrated from Louisiana and immigrated to Texas (See land returns for 3 Aug 1838). He received a Second Class Certificate for 640 acres of land in Jasper County, Republic of Texas. Church affiliation is listed as Church of Christ.
A "J.S. Popnoe" is listed in Civil War Muster Rolls as a private in Chambers' Battalion Texas Reserve Corps Infantry, Company E. Other Popnoes listed were from Ohio and one from Illinois. Listed in 1850 census in Sabine County. Listed in 1860 & 1870 census in Fannin county.
It was only in 1991 that we first established the connection between the Popenoes and the Popnoes although some members of both families had long thought that there might be a connection. What you will read below draws on the work of many people who have researched the Popnoe family, in particular: the late Allen Don Davis of Baytown, TX, a descendant of
Mary Magdalene Popnoe Straley; Mary Ann Woodward (pwoodard@cia-g.com), a descendant of
Lucretia Popnoe Basham; and Gordon Sloan (gsloan@ssvecnet.com), not related but an avid GeneCtyALogist who has been helping some Popnoes uncover their ancestry.
There is no conclusive evidence that our
Peter Popenoe was the father of James. However, the Popnoe family tradition was that James' father's name was Peter, that he was of French extraction, his place of birth unknown. James and Peter are both Popenoe family names. The name of Peter's wife is unknown, although she was reported in the census to be born in Louisiana and perhaps met and married Peter in the area that is now Polk County, Arkansas. Since James' first son was named Peter Vastine, it may be that she was a Vastine. Her first name might have been given to one of her daughters. According to the censuses, James could not read or write. His father, Peter, could and James' illiteracy may be due to his father's having died when James was very young and his frontier upbringing. In early records the name contains a middle vowel: Popiner, Popeno, Popenough and it is still often pronounced that way. Two of James' daughters, married in 1867 and 1869, were listed as Popinoe. Eventually the middle "e" was dropped and James' name and that of his descendants is now spelled Popnoe. His middle name is also a matter of dispute. Some Basham family records call him James Marion, another says James Monrow, and Allen Don Davis says James William Popnoe Sr. Davis may have interpreted that from the 1900 census that listed James Sr. living with the family of his son, James William.
Early censuses stated James Marion's birthplace as both Louisiana and Arkansas. On the back of his picture, in possession of Sue Rodgers, James' granddaughter wrote that he was born in Polk County, Louisiana. There is none such in Louisiana, but there is in Arkansas, which became a state after James was born. The Louisiana Territory was created in 1805 and became Missouri Territory in 1812. In 1810, what is now Polk County was still Indian Land. In 1819, the Arkansas Territory was created in the southern part of the Missouri Territory, encompassing what is now Arkansas and Oklahoma and with an uncertain Southwestern border with Texas. In 1820 the Arkansas Territorial Legislature established three counties which shared parts of present Polk County: Clark, Hempstead and Miller. Sevier County was formed from the latter two in 1828 and Polk was formed from Sevier in 1844. The Polk County courthouse burned during the Civil War and again in 1883. Anyone researching the Popenoes in that area from 1816 or before to the 1830s will have an interesting time.
According to a granddaughter, at one time James hauled freight by ox wagon from Jefferson, Texas to Dallas and later by horse wagon before there was a railroad. The freight was sent from New Orleans by river boats to Jefferson (near Shreveport), then freighted by wagon to other towns. The granddaughter said she had only seen her grandparents one time and that she remembered her grandmother's hair and eyes were black and she was very pretty.
Mexican Texas became the Republic of Texas in 1836 and the following year James Popnoe moved to Jasper County (in east Texas bordering Louisiana) where he received a second class certificate for 640 acres. On 28 Sep 1841 he received an unconditional certificate (#471) for this land. In 1845 Texas became a U.S. state and in 1847-8 James married Susan Watts whose family were living in the same county. In November 1850, James and Susan and their first born, Lucrecia were listed in the first U.S. Census in Sabine County, just north of Jasper County. By 1860 the family had moved to Fannin County, more than 200 miles away in north Texas bordering Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. In 1866 James paid a Civil War tax on one carriage in Fannin County. Between 1870 and 1880 the family moved again to a ranch in Coleman County, more than 100 miles NW of Austin. The ranch was located near Robinson's Peak, about 9 miles NW of Coleman town. James brought in masons from east Texas to build a two story stone house with chimneys at both ends. After it was abandoned many years later it was struck by lightning and the stones were hauled off by local farmers for their own use. A Coleman County history shows a cattle brand, SU for Susan Popnoe, recorded in 1878.
James may have been a slave holder. The 1880 census shows both a mulatto Popnoe and a black Popinaw in a Popnoe county. and the 1900 census shows a black Poponwy (?). In 1900, the censuses showed Susan Watts Popnoe still living in Coleman County, with her daughter Maggie Popnoe Straley, while James was living in Stonewall County, NW of Abilene, with his son James William Popnoe.
