"Damn it, Bones,
you're a doctor. You know that pain and guilt can't be taken
away with a wave of a magic wand... I don't want my pain taken
away! I need my pain!" - Kirk
Why watch this? It
has action and suspense, but wanders a little astray.
Plot Summary:
Captain Kirk and his crew face an urgent mission when a renegade
Vulcan, Sybok, takes three ambassadors hostage on the Planet of
Galactic Peace. Sybok, Spock's half-brother, believes a mythical
planet at the center of the galaxy holds the key to the ultimate
truth about existence. Hijacking the USS Enterprise, Sybok
forces the crew on a journey to cross the Great Barrier and
reach this uncharted world, which he calls Sha Ka Ree.
Dad's Preview:
This film is the lowest ranked of the original crew films. It
had the daunting task of following
Star Trek IV (1986), which is an excellent
film. It also is directed by William Shatner, and his
inexperience in that role shows. It is the little details here
that expose a film that doesn't know that it wants to be. The premise, that God
has been discovered by Spock's wandering brother Sybok, is a
little far-fetched. The plot would have made a good episode on the
TV series. The character of Sybok was just uninteresting. That
said, of course it's always fun to get the "old gang back
together again", so for that, it's a good watch.
