"Kahndaq needed a
hero... instead, they got me. I did what needed to be done, and
they imprisoned me for it. Now, five thousand years later, I am
free. And I give you my word: no one will ever stop me again." –

Why watch this?
This origin film, featuring a notable DC villain, is worth a
look.
Plot Summary: In the
ancient city of Kahndaq, a nearly omnipotent champion is
awakened after nearly five thousand years of imprisonment to
find his homeland occupied by a criminal syndicate. As he
unleashes his brutal, uncompromising brand of justice upon the
oppressors, his destructive actions draw the immediate attention
of the Justice Society of America. The modern heroes attempt to
contain his power and teach him heroism, but they must
ultimately decide whether to fight him or unite against a
rising, demonic threat.

Dad's Preview:
As the
DCEU (started by
Man of
Steel, 2013) wrapped up, the last few films
mattered less and less. Which is a shame, because this
dark super-hero-fest gave us a great anti-hero for
Shazam
to battle, and introduced the Justice Society (perhaps
the coolest scene is the initial face-off between Black
Adam and the JSA super-team). Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
had his eye on this project for years, but COVID-19 and
the general failures of the DCEU caused WB executives to
move to a new vision led by James Gunn. This film is
very sharp visually. It's a great origin story. However,
it's pretty standard super-fare. There is a nice
surprise at the end, but it was spoiled for fans because
of the DCEU's last-gasp status. |
