through this together!" - Josiah Day
Why watch this? It's
a historical look at what real Civil War looks like.
Plot Summary: During
the American Civil War, a company of Union soldiers is captured
at the Battle of Cold Harbor and sent to Andersonville, a
notorious and severely overcrowded Confederate prisoner-of-war
camp in Georgia. Once inside the stockade, the men must band
together to endure squalid living conditions, starvation, and
diseases caused by a severe lack of resources. In addition to
navigating their harsh environment and hostile captors, they are
forced to defend themselves against a predatory gang of fellow
Union inmates who steal from their own to survive.

Dad's Preview:
Hot on the heels of
Gettysburg (1993), I craved more films centered
on the U.S. Civil War. This overlooked nugget was what I
needed. It takes us inside one of the worst wartime
prison camps ever. For the men imprisoned at
Andersonville, and their captors, the War for States'
Rights is over. Now, the inmates are fighting to
survive, be it from under-staffed Rebel guards, or
roving bully gangs stealing food from their Yankee
brothers. Frankenheimer focused on accuracy, even
building a huge camp replica in Georgia. This film can
be hard to watch, but sometimes history's impact is
better when seen and felt. |
