"Yes, we're gonna have
to go right to ludicrous speed." - Dark Helmet
Why watch this? Too
many space films deserved a spoof - Mr. Brooks delivered.
Plot Summary:
On the planet Spaceball, the air supply is running low, forcing
the evil President Skroob to send his henchman Dark Helmet to
steal the air from the peaceful planet Druidia. To accomplish
this, Dark Helmet kidnaps Princess Vespa, hoping to ransom her
for the code to Druidia's atmospheric shield. However, a
renegade space pilot named Lone Starr and his loyal half-man,
half-dog sidekick Barf are hired by Druidia's King Roland to
rescue the princess.

Dad's Preview:
It's zany. It plays on every Star Wars scenario and
catchphrase. It's bonkers. And yes, it most certainly is
ludicrous! Parody mastermind Mel Brooks works with an all-star cast to pull off a
very funny movie, despite campy scenery and garage-level special
effects... perhaps that is part of the point. The plot is not important. Our space travelers jump from bad joke to pun to
sight gag, and back again. Just strap yourself in and enjoy the
raunchy rocket ride. |

the Republic was now under the control of a dark lord of the
Sith?" – Count Dooku, to his captive Obi-Wan
Why watch this?
Prequel Part 2 IS better than part 1, and Yoda finally

Plot Summary:
As thousands of planetary systems threaten to secede from the
Galactic Republic, Senator Padmé Amidala's life is put at risk
by an assassination attempt. Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi
investigates the attack while his apprentice, Anakin Skywalker,
is assigned to protect Padmé and falls in love with her.
Kenobi's investigation uncovers a secret clone army and leads
the Jedi to confront the growing Separatist threat, led by
former Jedi Master Count Dooku.

Dad's Preview:
To everyone's delight, this film is much better than its
predecessor. It's plot is tighter, and there is action galore
featuring state-of-the-art CGI effects. This film takes the
story to the planet Geonosis, and the start of the
Clone Wars. The film's final stand-off between Count Dooku
and Yoda had me cheering in the theater. However, Lucas'
multiple "comic relief" interjections involving C-3PO had me
cringing, and there was something forced with Anakin and Padmé's
romance. Still, this entry does capture some of the original
Star Wars' magic, and that's a good thing. |

Plot Summary:
Three decades after the Galactic Empire's collapse, a new
tyrannical force known as the First Order seeks to dominate the
galaxy and eliminate the last remaining Jedi Master, Luke
Skywalker. A young scavenger named Rey, a rogue stormtrooper
named Finn, and a Resistance pilot named Poe Dameron find
themselves drawn into the conflict when they encounter a droid
carrying a vital piece of a map to Skywalker's whereabouts.

Dad's Preview:
Episode VII succeeds in setting up a new Star Wars trilogy. Many
of the original cast members were still alive
and kicking, and we're like "C'mon folks, let's do this!" Here we see all three. Luke, Han and Leia, together
again. Well, that is not quite what happened, but it was teased that it was
GOING to happen. The new kids (Rey, Finn, Poe) are compelling
enough. The rest of the trilogy would prove to be a disappointment, but this
effort gave
us a little new hope.

Why watch this?
Kudos to J. J. Abram on this reboot - he gets it right.
Plot Summary:
James T. Kirk, a rebellious young man, joins Starfleet Academy
and quickly clashes with the logical Vulcan Spock, but their
shared potential is evident. An unexpected alien attack forces
them and other promising cadets onto the newly commissioned USS
Enterprise on its maiden voyage. Together, they face a vengeful
Romulan from the future whose actions threaten to destroy the
Federation, requiring them to overcome their differences and
become a team to save the future.
| |
Dad's Preview:
I was determined to be hyper-critical of this remake featuring
the characters from the original Enterprise. And yes, there are
some things I had to get over (the bridge is ultra-modern
and technologically superior to the original). But as a whole, the
talented young actors
were faithful to the source material, and it is a lot of fun to watch
them pave their own new way. There's even a little time-jumping.
So, just sit back, and enjoy
beginning of their new Trek journey. |

Why watch this?
Disney has since over-saturated the Star Wars brand, but this

Plot Summary:
Jyn Erso is a young woman with a troubled past, who is recruited
by the Rebel Alliance. Alongside Rebel officer Cassian Andor and
a diverse team of fighters, Jyn undertakes a daring mission to
steal the plans of the Death Star, the Galactic Empire's

"If you're not with

Why watch this?
We meh'ed the prequels: Episodes I and II. This dark,
disturbing film gave us what we needed.
Plot Summary:
Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker struggles with a difficult choice
after growing weary of the Jedi Council and being tempted by
Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's promises of power. The Clone Wars
wage on, but a dark plot threatens the Galactic Republic and the
Jedi Order itself. As Obi-Wan Kenobi hunts a dangerous foe,
Anakin's fate hangs in the balance, with the potential to
dramatically reshape the galaxy forever.
| |
Dad's Preview:
The impossible idea George Lucas had for the Star Wars
"prequels" was to make them for kids. Original fans,
now in their 30's, wanted the origin of the most incredible
villain in movie history! This trilogy IS the telling of Darth
Vader's story - it can't be light and funny. This film finally delivered,
and is by far the best of the three. The scene where Anakin
finally becomes Vader rips at your emotions. The decision to cast Ewan
McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi was genius, and his presence really
anchors each film. This third film in this trilogy finally made me feel
something! |

Plot Summary:
In the distant future, the crew of the transport spaceship

universe scarred by civil war and inhabited by dangerous,
cannibalistic Reavers. Among their passengers are Dr. Simon Tam
and his sister River, a young woman with psychic abilities
rescued from a terrifying Alliance facility. As a ruthless
Alliance operative pursues them relentlessly, the crew finds
themselves embroiled in a desperate fight to uncover a dark
truth tied to River's past and to expose it to the galaxy.

Dad's Preview:
This film is actually the climax to an incredible, one-season Fox sci-fi

Dad's Preview:
This futuristic action flick is loaded with talented actors,
mechanical and creature effects, as well as digital effects.
However, upon release, this film divided its audiences. Some
folks loved its lavish visuals and the strong performances by
its top stars. Others felt the film's plot was confusing and
over-stuffed with too many flamboyant performances, singling out
comedian Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod. As a Sci-fi lover, I have
softened somewhat on this film. It is a spectacle to
behold and there are some ground-breaking, really cool special
effects. Today's critics agree and it's considered a cult
classic. It soundly can be labeled "so bad, it's good." |

Why watch this? It
successfully rounds out the Star Wars trilogy!
Plot Summary:
Following the rescue of Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, the Rebel
Alliance learns of a new, more powerful Death Star under
construction. To strike a crucial blow against the Galactic
Empire, the Rebellion plans a daring attack on the incomplete
station and its shield generator on the Forest Moon of Endor.
While the Rebel fleet engages the Imperial forces in a fierce
space battle, Luke Skywalker confronts Darth Vader and the
Emperor, hoping to redeem his father.

Dad's Preview:
This trilogy finale delivers a tour de force of science fiction
action. We finally get to meet Darth Vader's superior, the
powerful and demented Emperor. He's more than a match for Luke
and his novice Jedi powers. Can the rag-tag band of rebels
defeat the massive space army of the Empire? There are a lot of great moments in
the final film (the opening sequence with Jaba The Hutt; Luke's
final confrontation with the Emperor). However, the space
battles are too busy, and I really wanted less Ewoks and more
Wookies. This film is one thing though - a must see for all Star

control of Arrakis is transferred to House Atreides, young Paul

This huge, epic science fiction film, with its all-star cast,
tried its damnedest to encapsulate the world that is Frank

Plot Summary:

two survivors, Dr. Morbius and his daughter Altaira, along with
a powerful robot named Robbie. The crew soon encounters a

This flick is one of the most well-done of the early science fiction films
from the 1950s. For its
time, this film was an incredible
feat, paying detailed attention to it sets, matte backgrounds

between the love of his life and the fate of the universe.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This sci-fi epic really is presented in two parts. The first,
and slower, half focuses on Paul Atreides' training alongside
the desert-dwelling Fremen tribes and his ascension to their
leader. Paul becomes Maud'Dib Usul, and develops a
relationship with the fiery warrior Chani. He also becomes a
sand worm-rider. The second half is more narrowly focused on two
awesome events: Paul's consumption of the Water of Life,
elevating him to Lisan al Gaib, a messianic leader; and
war with the marauding Harkonnens, who are determined to wipe
out the Atreides family. Yes, there is a lot going on with
numerous plots and hard-to-remember names. My wife said with a
furrowed brow, "I hate/appreciate Dune." Yet, like the
Dune franchise, it can become a rewarding hobby if you are

After Wrath of Kahn, expectations were very high.
Star Trek III

save the earth's future from its destructive nature. This film
is beloved by Trekkies and regular folk alike. It's perfect.

Dad's Preview:
This is a colorful, campy fantasy film, offering a fitting homage to the old
Flash Gordon serials of the 1930's. It's a welcome return
to innocence. Von Sydow is perfectly cast as the ultra-evil Ming
The Merciless. It may seem hokey at times, but never stops
being fun. The movie's soundtrack was performed by Queen, and
they do a stellar job of blending eerie, other-worldly sounds
with good old hard rock! |

"Hokey religions and
ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side,
kid." – Han Solo
Why watch this? This
is the film that started everything: Jedis. Wookies. Skywalkers.
Lucas. Ford. Industrial Light & Magic.
Plot Summary:
A young farm boy, Luke Skywalker, gets swept up in a galactic
rebellion after discovering a message from a captured princess.
With the help of a wise mentor, a roguish pilot, his furry
co-pilot, and two droids, Luke embarks on a mission to rescue
the princess and join the fight against the oppressive Galactic
Empire. This unlikely band of heroes must confront the Empire's
powerful new weapon, the Death Star.

Dad's Preview:
The premise seemed childish to me, and at age 15, I was focused
on raunchy teen films, not kid movies. That all melted away when I
begrudgingly sat through
Star Wars with my much younger niece and nephew. The film's heart is young Luke Skywalker, a boy
from a farm who longs to escape his "boring" existence. He wants
to get out there and join the fight against the galaxy's evil
Empire. That young farm boy, literally, was me. Sure the aliens and space
battles are great sci-fi, but it's the characters, and how
relatable they are to everyday folks, that makes it such a great
film. It would blow up the box office, sell zillions of toys and
such, and bring in the needed cash for Lucas to make an even
better

"I haven't faced death.
I've cheated death. I've tricked my way out of death and patted
myself on the back
for my ingenuity. I know nothing..." -
James T. Kirk
Why watch this? This
film recaptures the magic of the original series... and more.
Plot Summary:
Admiral Kirk is drawn out of retirement when his former
adversary, the genetically engineered superhuman Khan Noonien
Singh, escapes exile and seeks revenge by seizing control of a
powerful terraforming device. Now with control of the Genesis
device, Khan lures Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise into
a deadly confrontation in a nebula. Ultimately, the film
culminates in a climactic starship battle, forcing the crew to
make significant sacrifices to stop Khan's destructive quest.

Dad's Preview:
The first film,
Star
Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), had its moments, but it
dragged a little in its ode to nostalgia. This thriller was a pleasant surprise.
It finally tapped into the true essence of the three main
Enterprise officers: Kirk, Spock and McCoy - their familiar
banter carries much of the film. The
grandest of surprises was Ricardo Montalban, reprising his role
as Khan, a super intelligent being, whom Kirk sent into exile
years ago. Khan will have his revenge on Admiral Kirk, spouting
Melville all the way. It's hard to find a fault with this
superb, exciting flick. I can still hear the echoes of Trekkies rejoicing. |

Strikes Back
"Size matters not. Look at
me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm?" - Master Yoda
Why watch this?
It's bigger, better, and more emotionally impactful than its
predecessor.
Plot Summary:
Three years after the destruction of the Death Star, the Rebel
Alliance is forced to flee their base on the ice planet Hoth
when it's discovered and attacked by the Galactic Empire. As
Darth Vader relentlessly pursues the Rebellion across the
galaxy, Luke Skywalker trains with Jedi Master Yoda, while Han
Solo, Princess Leia, and Chewbacca seek refuge and repairs for
the Millennium Falcon.

Dad's Preview:
After the surprising (and record-breaking) success of
Star
Wars (1977), George Lucas had a much bigger budget for the sequel,
and the result is a better film. It was wise to continue
to focus on the characters, even with more advanced special-effects. The stakes are
higher in this darker and more mature film. Luke is mentally called
to leave the
rebellion
to become a Jedi under Master Yoda. Han and Leia seek refuge in
Cloud City with Han's old pirate pal, Lando Calrissian. Our space-hopping heroes face
real dangers and betrayals. They suffer dearly, as the evil
Empire tightens its grip on the rebel's efforts. As the credits
rolled, we could hardly wait for this saga's
final chapter.
