Why watch this?
This box-office hit re-ignited Star Trek for its loyal
fans and future generations.
Plot Summary:
A colossal and powerful alien entity, known as V'Ger, approaches
Earth, leaving destruction in its wake. Admiral James T. Kirk
reassumes command of the refitted USS Enterprise to intercept
the mysterious entity and determine its intentions. The crew
must navigate the dangers within the massive V'Ger, confront its
purpose, and prevent it from destroying Earth.
Dad's Preview:
Ten years after its namesake TV show (that only lasted three
seasons) this film made it to theaters. This was partly in
response to the series success in syndication and a massive fan
base called "Trekkies". It reunites the original crew,
and the mission is to stop an approaching entity that is
destroying universes and heading toward Earth. The film
certainly takes itself serious, and that is its one drawback.
There are too many long, slow-moving shots of space ships set to
an overly dramatic musical score. It IS great to have Kirk, Spock, Bones
and the crew together again, saving the world... as it should
be. The sequel, The Wrath of Khan
(1982),
would find better footing and success.
