"Turned left at

John, when asked how he
found America.
Why watch this? At
the risk of riling England's snooty demeanor, four lads decided
to rock... and have fun.
Plot Summary:
There's a plot?... Just kidding. This follows The Beatles as
they navigate the chaotic demands of their newfound fame while
preparing for a televised performance. Their attempts to evade
screaming fans and fulfill their commitments are complicated by
Paul's mischievous grandfather, who adds a layer of comical
mayhem to their escapades. Despite the antics and challenges,
the band ultimately makes it to their performance, showcasing
their music and signature wit along the way.

Dad's Preview:
It's fast-paced, hard to follow, manic, disorienting,
irreverent, and very juvenile. The behaviors
were what 1960's parents loathed. Cut your hair! Stop making that
noise! Don't talk to me that way! Do what you're told! Well
these blokes from Liverpool were not having any of that. The fab
four spoke to millions of disenchanted teens across the globe
and had a great time doing it. This film is a semi-mockumentary
about how much these guys loved to misbehave. It is also a metaphor
for the evolution of their musical style. They quickly became
icons and would create music that changed the hearts of those
willing to listen. |

In my youth,
I avoided this film like the plague. Then my son's high school
put on its production and I am happy to admit that I finally

poignant story. For you see, it is not really about
Miss Poppins and the children - I will let you figure the rest

I highly suggest viewing the wonderful film

"You seek a great

fortune, though it will not be the one you seek. But first...
first you must travel a long and difficult road, a road fraught
with peril. Mm-hmm. You shall see thangs, wonderful to tell." –
Blind Seer
Why watch this? This
is a fun, poetic American fable that feels very familiar.
Plot Summary:
Loosely based on Homer's Odyssey, this comedy drama follows
three escaped convicts – Ulysses Everett McGill, Pete, and
Delmar – as they embark on a journey through Depression-era
Mississippi. Their aim is to reach Everett’s home and recover a
hidden treasure before the area is flooded to create a new lake.
Along the way, they encounter a series of eccentric characters,
evade a relentless lawman, and inadvertently become folk music
sensations.
| |
Dad's Preview:
It took me a second viewing to get this film, and it was
worth it. The Coen brothers were ambitious here: let's retell
The Odyssey, but in mid-Depression America, then we'll
pepper the heroes' journey with American folk music, in effect
making it an American story. It works, in a quasi-surreal way,
thanks to music being in the background of many scenes. It was
also a great idea to used three incredible actors in the leads.
The journey is fraught with colorful encounters with many folks,
each a test for the three travelers. Be sure and check out the
film's soundtrack - it's a pretty darn good listen. |

"Well, I'm sure I'd
feel much worse if I weren't under such heavy sedation." -
David St. Hubbins
Why watch this?
It's entertaining to watch these faux rock stars, and their screwed-up
values.
Plot Summary:
British heavy metal band Spinal Tap is on their ill-fated 1982
United States tour. The film chronicles the band's struggles
with declining popularity, botched performances, and internal
squabbles, offering a satirical look at the music industry.
Ultimately, it captures the band's relentless pursuit of success
despite numerous setbacks and their exaggerated sense of
self-importance.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is the original film that coined the term "mockumentary".
Director Carl Reiner and the three lead actors: Guest, McKean
and Shearer, immerse us into the world of '80's heavy metal rock
and roll. It's as outrageous and over-the-top as the music it
parodies. The band is about success and more, more, more -
all with hilarious results. This same team of actors would go on

"Oh,

Haynes
Why watch this?
... superb musical numbers, talented dancers, and
holiday cheer!
Plot Summary:
Bob Wallace and Phil Davis are two best friends who host a TV
musical show. Years before, they served in WWII together under
General Waverly. They learn the General owns an Inn in Vermont, but
business is not very good because, well, they don't have any
snow. The pair concoct a scheme
to take their famous TV variety show to the Vermont Inn and help out their old
commander. They partner with the sassy Haynes
Sisters to pull it off.
| |
Dad's Preview:
A lot makes this holiday
film a classic. The chemistry between the four leads is
so seamless, it's hardly like they are acting. The vocal numbers
are catchy, but the dance routines are magical. It will melt your heart as Phil plays
match-maker for his "I'm too old for love" buddy Bob. It has
certainly become one of our annual Christmas must-watch gems.

"All right, Sparky,

Nicholson, about Jasmine
Why watch this? It's
a Disney-adapted classic story set to great musical numbers.
Plot Summary:
Aladdin, a kind street urchin in the city of Agrabah, discovers
a magic lamp containing a powerful yet comical Genie. With the
Genie's help, Aladdin tries to win the heart of the
free-spirited Princess Jasmine. Meanwhile, the Sultan's
power-hungry advisor, Jafar, seeks to steal the lamp and the
Genie's power for himself.

Dad's Preview:
The story of Aladdin, and the magic lamp, has been told to
children for centuries. It is a classic tale. What makes this
treasure stand out is Robin Williams as the Genie. It's a marriage
made in heaven to turn Williams, and his manic, fast-hitting
humor, loose, then back-fill the Genie's animation to match it. I
can watch every Genie scene over and over and it never gets old.
He morphs into numerous characters from pop culture and film. It truly is,

Why watch this?
A wonderful children's film about life, and death, and the
important in-between.
Plot Summary: A
young boy named Miguel dreams of becoming a musician,
despite his family's long-standing ban on music. On Día
de Muertos, a series of events leads him to the vibrant
Land of the Dead. There, he embarks on a journey to find
his deceased great-great-grandfather, a legendary
singer, and uncover the truth about his family's past.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Why are we so afraid of death? It is human nature and fear of
the unknown. This delightful, colorful Latino-based film
explores death, and many more very adult topics such as: the
impact a missing father can have, old grudges and the damage
they do, and the importance of pursuing your heart's dream,
regardless of the many naysayers. Yet, children will love it,
too. The Pixar animation, once again, out-does itself. The
choice to zip up and infuse brightness, and life, into the land
of the dead was brilliant. In many ways it is as creative as
Up (2009) or
Inside Out
(2015). The concept of the hereafter is unique and
well-done. We all get to experience Miguel's arduous journey to
be himself, while honoring his family. This film is about as
good as it gets if you are looking for an experience to make you
feel really good inside. |

John Belushi had more cred with the studio execs, so he brought in John Landis

Walt Disney's stellar career began with this cinematic

unequaled and extremely popular throughout the world. It ushered
in the golden age of animation, and remained as the
highest-grossing animated film for 55 years! It has some fairly
scary moments, but it is adorably cute, too.

Why watch this?
This film revitalized Disney's animated film reputation.
Plot Summary:

beyond the sea and falls in love with a human prince she rescues
from a shipwreck. Desperate to join his world, Ariel makes a
dangerous pact with the sea witch Ursula, trading her voice for

Dad's Preview:
During the 1980s
Disney's animated films had lost something. Then came The
Little Mermaid. This gem felt like they
had returned to basics, and found the magic again. It has humor and
loveable characters, but it is the music that stands out as
iconic. Those numbers just make you want to stand up, sing and
even dance (or well, swim). So my youngest son did just that - he was selected to
portray Sebastian in his high school musical! And, (parental
brag warning) he
killed it - we were so proud of him and all the play's cast! |

"Gee, I'm glad you
turned up, we've been looking inside every cake in town." -
Cosmo
Why watch this?
I had a wide smile from beginning-to-end during this
acclaimed musical.
Plot Summary:
This musical centers on Hollywood's tumultuous transition from
silent films to talking pictures. Silent movie idol Don
Lockwood, along with his onscreen partner Lina Lamont, face the
challenge of adapting to the new technology, especially when
Lina's voice proves unsuitable for sound films. An aspiring
actress named Kathy Selden enters their lives, becoming integral
to their career aspirations.

Dad's Preview:
This will forever be the lofty standard by which musicals are
compared, and with good reasons. The songs are catchy and fun. The dance
numbers are extravagant. The leads are endearing and clearly
having a good time. This was not Hollywood's first musical, but
it is one of the best. I was really impressed with
Debbie Reynold's dance skills - she tore it up. I also sit in awe
of Gene Kelly - what an graceful athlete! He glides on air and
is sublime to watch. |

Why watch this? A
tour through a mysterious chocolate factory. What could happen?

Dad's Preview: As addicting as its namesake dessert
flavor, this
children's film has a lot to say. Not only is this trip as magical as
the journey to Oz, it also takes special care to pass along valuable lessons to kids and
parents alike: Don't overeat. Too much candy is bad for you. Don't spoil
your children. Don't watch too much TV. These "bad" little kids
get their cod liver oil. I always thought of myself as the sweet, innocent,
and honorable
Charlie... but am I? The verdict is still out. |

Dad's Preview:
This is one of the greatest fantasy films of all time. On the
surface, it's wonderful and magical - a treat for every
wide-eyed child, ablaze with a new film enhancement they called
Technicolor. It was also lovely escapism that was layered with
symbolism and hope, just what America needed after the
devastating Great Depression of the early 1930's. Early in the
film, a tornado carries Dorothy Gale and her farmhouse into the
sky. When the house lands with a thud, Dorothy opens the front
door and Oz is
revealed in its vivid, fantastical splendor! It is a scene that
will always emotionally impact this ol' Texas farm boy. |
