A Trip to the Moon
(1902, aka
Voyage Dans La Lune),
Director: Georges Méliès, Rated TV-Y
a wonderful
piece of photography
 Starring:
Georges Méliès, Bleuette Bernon, François Lallement, Henri
Delannoy, Jules-Eugène Legris, Victor André, Delpierre, Farjaux,
Kelm, Brunnet
DML Rating:

"The color version,
considered as lost during several decades, is then found in 1993
by the Filmoteca de Catalunya, however in desperate condition.
As of 1999, highly delicate work began to rescue and digitize
the elements. It is only in 2010 that a complete restoration
could be launched, in order to enable the audience to rediscover
this major cinema work, 109 years after its creation." –
Prelude to Le Voyage
Dans La Lune in full Color
Why watch this?
Méliès was an original pioneer in film, and certainly the
science fiction genre. This short work was ground-breaking.
Plot Summary:
Spanning about 13 minutes, the story speeds along as a group of
the Astronomy Club boards a bullet-shaped rocket and are
literally shot at the moon. There, our intrepid
explorers take a nap under the stars and venture into the moon's
core where they encounter scaly moon creatures called
Selenites (named after Selene, the Greek moon goddess).
| |
Dad's Preview:
A Trip to the Moon is film history 101. This, along with
Metropolis (1927), are Science Fiction's holiest of
grails.
Though outwardly amateurish, there are many techniques employed
that would become modern film mainstays: substitution splicing,
early tracking shots, and scene transition dissolves. The rocket
piercing the moon face's eye is iconic. This early adventure is
certainly enjoyable and a creative work to behold. I recommend
watching both the black-and-white and color (each film frame was
hand-painted) versions, as both were created as the same time.

"Look, my dad's machine
works. When we get home and he fixes us all,
we're gonna be so
rich. You'll regret this." –
Amy Szalinski
Why watch this? Four
teens are minimized to the size of ants. Now, that's a problem.
Plot Summary:
An absent-minded inventor, Wayne Szalinski, accidentally shrinks
his and his neighbor's children to a minuscule size with his new
experimental ray machine. Accidentally swept into the trash, the
four children must brave the now-enormous and dangerous
backyard, filled with towering grass and menacing insects, to
find their way back home. While the miniaturized kids face
perilous challenges, Wayne and his wife search frantically for
their missing children, eventually realizing the incredible
truth and working to reverse the shrinking process.
| |
Dad's Preview:
The real genius at play here is the creative perils that befall
the miniaturized kids. The yard's grass is now a forest, simple water drops are a flood, and a tiny
insect
is a hungry monster! The actors portraying the children did
a fine job, as it mostly felt very real. There are many memorable, tender and scary
moments. This huge Disney hit, will grow on you. |

It's a great space Western, and Nathan Fillion is a great

Plot Summary:
In the distant future, the crew of the transport spaceship
Serenity, led by Capt. Malcolm Reynolds, navigates a
universe scarred by civil war and inhabited by dangerous,
cannibalistic Reavers. Among their passengers are Dr. Simon Tam
and his sister River, a young woman with psychic abilities
rescued from a terrifying Alliance facility. As a ruthless
Alliance operative pursues them relentlessly, the crew finds
themselves embroiled in a desperate fight to uncover a dark
truth tied to River's past and to expose it to the galaxy.

Dad's Preview:
This film is actually the climax to an incredible, one-season Fox sci-fi
series called

a girl with unknown capabilities.
This takes them on a mission, with the brutal reavers hot
on their trail. This is top notch sci-fi enjoyment. |

Why watch this? This

Plot Summary:
A creative, tech-averse father forces his disconnected family on
a cross-country road trip to drop his daughter off at film
school. Their attempt at bonding is interrupted when a young
tech entrepreneur's AI system goes rogue and initiates a global
robot apocalypse, capturing nearly all of humanity. The quirky
Mitchell family must work together to overcome their differences
and save the world.

Dad's Preview:
This is what might occur if the creators of
Black Mirror decided to make a family adventure movie.
It's the terror of SkyNet, but the Flintstone's are coming to
the rescue. There's a very heartfelt sub-plot that will impact
all dads and daughters in the audience. That plot even carries
through when the Robots begin their world-conquering domination.
There are too many witty one-liners to count, mostly referencing
the sad fact that the older generation just doesn't get
modern technology. It's all hilarious. This raucous,
visually-stunning family adventure is fun for everyone and it
drips with tech satire. |

"We needed a miracle.
And then we got one. Say hello to a super piglet. This beautiful
and special little creature was miraculously discovered on one
Chilean farm." -
Lucy Mirando
Why watch this?
It is simply a great story about a big pig, love and the animal
food processing industry.
Plot Summary:
In 2007, the Mirando Corporation bio-engineered 26 "super pigs"
and placed them with 26 farmers around the globe. The idea is to
check back ten years later, and determine which massive porker
became the best. The winner is Okja, who was sent to South
Korea. The hog lives with a family, but is closest to a teenage
girl, Mija. The win results in an immediate trip to New
York City for Okja, as per contract. Mija, now home alone, is
devastated. Against protest, Mija sets out to find and free Okja
from experiments and eventual slaughter.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This joint, all-star
venture between South Korea and America results in a film that
is way more touching than it should be. The special effects
render Okja as a highly intelligent animal, worthy of affection
as a family pet. This adventure takes us all over the world, and
even into a grisly slaughterhouse. The direction by Joon-jo
creates a great tale that takes a satirical look at animal food
processing. Tilda Swinton really shows her versatile acting
abilities as the sunny, yet conniving, Lucy Mirando. Once you
fall in love with Ojka, you will never look at a pork chop the
same way again. |

Why watch this?
It's a post-apocalyptic movie... with a great love story.
Plot Summary:
Seven years after giant monsters take over the world, a timid
young man named Joel lives in an underground bunker with other
survivors. When he reconnects via radio with his high school
girlfriend and discovers she is 85 miles away, he decides to
embark on a perilous journey to be with her. Along the way, he
must face his fears and learn how to survive on the
monster-infested surface, with the help of a loyal dog and a
pair of seasoned scavengers.
| |
Dad's Preview:
In a sea of recent CGI-effects laden films, I find it rare that
one packs some real emotional punch. Here the effects never
dominate the film. Its center is the story and down-to-earth
characters - you might even say, "A boy and his dog." This
action movie is refreshing, full of heart and creative. Our
likeable yet flawed hero's journey, undertaken for love, is
wrought with serious danger. Joel's success hinges on his
ability to accept help and grow as a person. You can't ask for
more than that. Even with some of the slimiest, creepiest
creatures on film, it's still a family-friendly affair, with an
emotional ending you might not see coming. I am surprised that
no sequel is planned. |

Plot Summary:
Douglas Quaid is a construction worker tormented by dreams of
Mars and a mysterious woman. He visits Rekall, a company
specializing in virtual memory implants for exotic vacations,
hoping to experience a simulated Mars adventure. However, the
procedure goes awry, uncovering evidence that Quaid's entire

Part 2 ends in explosive fashion, and harkens a third film.
Plot Summary:
Paul Atreides unites with Chani and the Fremen to seek revenge
against the conspirators who destroyed his family, rising as a
powerful leader on the desert planet Arrakis. As he embraces the
ways of the desert warriors and navigates a manufactured
prophecy, he struggles to prevent a terrible future holy war
that he foresees. Ultimately, Paul faces a difficult choice
between the love of his life and the fate of the universe.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This sci-fi epic really is presented in two parts. The first,
and slower, half focuses on Paul Atreides' training alongside
the desert-dwelling Fremen tribes and his ascension to their
leader. Paul becomes Maud'Dib Usul, and develops a
relationship with the fiery warrior Chani. He also becomes a
sand worm-rider. The second half is more narrowly focused on two
awesome events: Paul's consumption of the Water of Life,
elevating him to Lisan al Gaib, a messianic leader; and
war with the marauding Harkonnens, who are determined to wipe
out the Atreides family. Yes, there is a lot going on with
numerous plots and hard-to-remember names. My wife said with a
furrowed brow, "I hate/appreciate Dune." Yet, like the
Dune franchise, it can become a rewarding hobby if you are

city, Father - and you the brain of this city - and all of us in
the city's light... and where are the people, father, whose
hands built your city...?" -
Freder to his father Jon
Why watch this? This
masterpiece is ground-zero for sci-fi influence in films.
Plot Summary:
This is a morality tale set in a futuristic city dystopia where
the wealthy rule and abide in shining skyscrapers above, while
the workers live below in concrete squalor. The city's creator
and administrator is the cold Jon Fredersen. His
privileged, good-hearted son, Freder, by chance, encounters
Maria, a saintly woman caring for the underworld's children.
This inspires Freder to learn the truth about the oppressed
workers, who slave away, operating massive computers, themselves
becoming cogs in the brutal machinery. Jon becomes frustrated
that the workers are planning to rebel, so he enlists the city's
inventor, Rotwang, to covert a female robot into the likeness of
Maria, to quell the upstart insurrection.

Dad's Preview:
German director, Fritz Lang and his wife, Thea von Harbou,
created the silent film, Metropolis, over 17 grueling
months. This film's influence
on science fiction film can be seen in the likes of
Blade
Runner,
Frankenstein and
Star Wars,
to name a few. It is an epic spectacle that used religious
allegory, satire, and insane special effects to tell its story.
The plot, which is eerily pertinent to today's political arena,
illustrates the dangers of a rich, billionaire ruling-class that
revels in a gulf of separation from the working class who keep
things running. Even then, greedy corporations were devouring
their low-level employees as illustrated in the Moloch scene. Most versions available have been restored to
their former glory. |

Why watch this?
... it's ground-breaking, based on a superb novel, and DINOSAURS!
Plot Summary:
Wealthy entrepreneur John Hammond creates a theme park on a
remote island, populated by genetically engineered dinosaurs.
Before opening, a group of scientists, including a
paleontologist, a paleobotanist, and a mathematician, are
invited to assess the park's safety. However, a power failure
caused by industrial sabotage leads to the dinosaurs escaping
their enclosures. The visitors and park staff must then struggle
to survive and escape the now-perilous island.

Dad's Preview:
I read Michael Crichton's novel, about bio-engineered dinosaurs, and immediately thought,
"Spielberg has to do this film!" Not long after,
Spielberg announced JP as his next project. I wept. The original plan was to use
only life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, however, the special effects team won over the director
with their amazing CGI skills. The digital dinosaurs were jaw-dropping.
The rest is history. The film became another Spielberg smash hit.

The
Alien sequel brings the action and a lot more aliens
to deal with.
Plot Summary:
After surviving the alien attack, Ellen Ripley is rescued from
deep space after 57 years in stasis. She reluctantly agrees to
return to the planet where the creatures were first encountered
when contact is lost with a terra-forming colony established
there. Ripley and a group of Colonial Marines face an
overwhelming threat as they attempt to rescue the colonists and
battle, not one, but many aliens.

Dad's Preview:
James Cameron took over as director and blew the lid off the
franchise with this thrill-packed sci-fi mega-hit. Again, at its
center is the very capable Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), but this time she's an
observer on a mission accompanied by a unit of bad-ass space
Marines. Their objective - find some missing colonists on the planet
where Ripley and her crew first encountered the original xenomorph -
Ripley and the marines
have no idea what they are walking into. Fortunately, it's
wonderful chaos for film audiences! |

I've cheated death. I've tricked my way out of death and patted

Why watch this? This
film recaptures the magic of the original series... and more.
Plot Summary:
Admiral Kirk is drawn out of retirement when his former
adversary, the genetically engineered superhuman Khan Noonien
Singh, escapes exile and seeks revenge by seizing control of a
powerful terraforming device. Now with control of the Genesis
device, Khan lures Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise into
a deadly confrontation in a nebula. Ultimately, the film
culminates in a climactic starship battle, forcing the crew to
make significant sacrifices to stop Khan's destructive quest.

Dad's Preview:
The first film,
Star
Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), had its moments, but it
dragged a little in its ode to nostalgia. This thriller was a pleasant surprise.
It finally tapped into the true essence of the three main
Enterprise officers: Kirk, Spock and McCoy - their familiar
banter carries much of the film. The
grandest of surprises was Ricardo Montalban, reprising his role
as Khan, a super intelligent being, whom Kirk sent into exile
years ago. Khan will have his revenge on Admiral Kirk, spouting
Melville all the way. It's hard to find a fault with this
superb, exciting flick. I can still hear the echoes of Trekkies rejoicing. |

Why watch this? This
is the film that started everything: Jedis. Wookies. Skywalkers.
Lucas. Ford. Industrial Light & Magic.
Plot Summary:
A young farm boy, Luke Skywalker, gets swept up in a galactic

With the help of a wise mentor, a roguish pilot, his furry

Dad's Preview:
The premise seemed childish to me, and at age 15, I was focused
on raunchy teen films, not kid movies. That all melted away when I
begrudgingly sat through
Star Wars with my much younger niece and nephew. The film's heart is young Luke Skywalker, a boy
from a farm who longs to escape his "boring" existence. He wants
to get out there and join the fight against the galaxy's evil
Empire. That young farm boy, literally, was me. Sure the aliens and space
battles are great sci-fi, but it's the characters, and how
relatable they are to everyday folks, that makes it such a great
film. It would blow up the box office, sell zillions of toys and
such, and bring in the needed cash for Lucas to make an even
better

Strikes Back
"Size matters not. Look at
me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm?" - Master Yoda
Why watch this?
It's bigger, better, and more emotionally impactful than its
predecessor.
Plot Summary:
Three years after the destruction of the Death Star, the Rebel
Alliance is forced to flee their base on the ice planet Hoth
when it's discovered and attacked by the Galactic Empire. As
Darth Vader relentlessly pursues the Rebellion across the
galaxy, Luke Skywalker trains with Jedi Master Yoda, while Han
Solo, Princess Leia, and Chewbacca seek refuge and repairs for
the Millennium Falcon.
| |
Dad's Preview:
After the surprising (and record-breaking) success of
Star
Wars (1977), George Lucas had a much bigger budget for the sequel,
and the result is a better film. It was wise to continue
to focus on the characters, even with more advanced special-effects. The stakes are
higher in this darker and more mature film. Luke is mentally called
to leave the
rebellion
to become a Jedi under Master Yoda. Han and Leia seek refuge in
Cloud City with Han's old pirate pal, Lando Calrissian. Our space-hopping heroes face
real dangers and betrayals. They suffer dearly, as the evil
Empire tightens its grip on the rebel's efforts. As the credits
rolled, we could hardly wait for this saga's
final chapter.

- Luke, after he surrenders to Darth Vader
Why watch this? It
successfully rounds out the Star Wars trilogy!
Plot Summary:
Following the rescue of Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, the Rebel
Alliance learns of a new, more powerful Death Star under
construction. To strike a crucial blow against the Galactic
Empire, the Rebellion plans a daring attack on the incomplete
station and its shield generator on the Forest Moon of Endor.
While the Rebel fleet engages the Imperial forces in a fierce
space battle, Luke Skywalker confronts Darth Vader and the
Emperor, hoping to redeem his father.

Dad's Preview:
This trilogy finale delivers a tour de force of science fiction
action. We finally get to meet Darth Vader's superior, the
powerful and demented Emperor. He's more than a match for Luke
and his novice Jedi powers. Can the rag-tag band of rebels
defeat the massive space army of the Empire? There are a lot of great moments in
the final film (the opening sequence with Jaba The Hutt; Luke's
final confrontation with the Emperor). However, the space
battles are too busy, and I really wanted less Ewoks and more
Wookies. This film is one thing though - a must see for all Star
Wars fans. |
