Why watch this?
WARNING
- this film is tough to watch and disturbing... not for
the squeamish.
Plot Summary:
Henry, a nomadic ex-con, lives with his former cellmate Otis and
embarks on a random killing spree. Otis's sister Becky moves in
with the two men, creating an unusual dynamic where Henry seems
to develop a connection with her while still engaging in violent
acts with his accomplice Otis.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is the shocking story of real-life serial killer Henry Lee
Lucas, who was convicted of 11 murders. This film is deeply
disturbing. The gut-punch is the family that Henry and Otis
murder. They just pick a random house in a suburb, break in, and
sadistically kill everyone inside. No motive. No reason. It was
just that family's unlucky night. There is no way to be safe
from such brutality. Michael Rooker is haunting as the
emotionally-devoid psychopath Henry Lee. |

This smart, unsettling descent into Swedish folklore will leave

Plot Summary:
Dani is a young woman grappling with a personal tragedy and a
strained relationship. She joins her boyfriend and his friends
on a trip to a remote Swedish village for a legendary midsummer
festival that occurs once every 90 years. What begins as an
idyllic summer holiday in a land of eternal daylight quickly
devolves into a terrifying experience as the group becomes
entangled in the community's increasingly bizarre and violent
pagan rituals.

Dad's Preview:
This film give off serious
The Wicker Man (1973) vibes.
To this day, I have this strange internal fear of doomsday cults
and secret pagan societies, lurking under the radar, snagging
innocents for their bloody rituals. This film creates palpable
dread as we watch a young adult vacation quickly turn into
something totally unexpected, and unexplainable. It is very
terrifying. That's why it works. |

Carnival Barker
Why watch this? This
classic film is both terrifying and extremely compassionate.
Plot Summary:
A beautiful trapeze artist named Cleopatra seduces a wealthy
little person named Hans in a traveling circus, with the secret
intention of murdering him for his inheritance with her lover,
the strongman Hercules. After her cruel intentions are revealed
at the wedding banquet, the circus performers conspire to stop
the injustice. Ultimately, they exact their vengeance upon the
two traitors in a climactic and shocking turn of events.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Stirring controversy upon its release, this unique, and
sometimes disturbing, film explores the carnival sideshow world
of freaks and monsters. It is clear to me that early critics
never spent a second around inmates at a state school or
patients in a ward for those with physical abnormalities. Those
reviewers, akin to the film's antagonists Cleopatra and
Hercules, considered these circus folk to be below them;
mere grotesque monsters to be laughed at and taken advantage of.
Director Browning understood the global prejudices at play, and
his film offers the possibility that these human beings have the
same needs we all do. Those who can't see that, are the real
monster in the story. |

Why watch this?
It's crude, gory, slimy, violent, and completely awesome - if you
like this kind of horror film.
Plot Summary:
In the small town of Wheelsy, South Carolina, a meteorite
crashes, unleashing a parasitic alien creature. The creature
infects local businessman Grant Grant, transforming him and
giving him a hunger for raw meat. As Grant's body becomes a
monstrous breeding ground, a swarm of slug-like offspring
threatens to infect the rest of the town, turning residents into
zombie-like drones.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This well-made film
wisely does not take itself too seriously.
There are some really funny lines, most coming from a distraught
Jack MacReady (the character's name is a homage to 1982's
The Thing, another gruesome, alien invasion
flick). There are also some really disturbing scenes, but I
really enjoyed it - start to slimy finish.

family's sinister, deeply disturbing motives for inviting him.

Dad's Preview:
If you are a lover of films that psychologically devastate, this
is your winner of the week. It plays on many mental horrors that
trouble us all in our nightmares: being strapped helplessly in a
chair, being hypnotized, being preyed on by a murder-cult. Add to the
mix several terrors centered on a secret society that
abducts black people for their nefarious pleasures. Jordan Peele's directorial debut is a rollercoaster ride that would
thrill the likes of Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Sterling. How this
film builds dread is truly masterful. This flick flies by, and
before you know it, the ending... and I mean THAT ending... hits
you hard. This great film sets a new standard for the
psychological thriller. |

Dad's Preview:
It took until 1979, when I was seventeen, to muster
the courage to see this film. Back then folks were still saying it
was real footage of a true story that
happened somewhere in my home state. Six of us went to its
traditional midnight showing. It scared the shit out of us. So (naturally) we drove
to the creepy ghost town of Denton Valley where the old Williams
place
lay a mile
off the road. We parked and slowly walked to the old house with
flickering flashlights... Julie's fingernails were dug deep into
my arm as we ventured inside, finding strange satanic writings on the
dusty walls. We ran back to the car screaming - the massacre could have occurred right
there! This film is realistic, scary, disturbing and one of the
best horror films ever made. |

you create unholy life, there's always a chance it will turn on you.
Plot Summary:
Shipwrecked traveler Edward Parker is rescued and subsequently
stranded on a remote South Pacific island belonging to the
reclusive Dr. Moreau. Parker discovers Moreau is conducting
grotesque experiments, using vivisection to transform animals
into human-like creatures, which he controls with a whip and a
strict set of rules known as "The Law". Among Moreau's creations
is Lota, a beautiful "Panther Woman" he attempts to mate with
Parker.
| |
Dad's Preview:
There's just something eternally creepy about this story,
originally penned as The Island of Doctor Moreau, by the
great H. G. Wells in 1896. The film is thought-provoking, and I
detect the Dr. Frankenstein theme throughout - when man
creates new life, there is always the risk that those creations
will destroy their maker. I personally find this concept very
disturbing, and I am not the only one. The film was banned upon release in many countries.
It asks all humanity to ponder, "What does it really mean to be human?" |

Plot Summary:
College student and drummer Andrew Neiman desires to be the

Buddy Rich-best. Shaffer Conservatory in NYC is prestigious
and Andrew is recruited into a Studio jazz ensemble. On the path
to core drummer, he (an many players) must endure harsh verbal
and physical abuse at the hands of the conductor, Terence
Fletcher. It quickly becomes a test of wills pitting the boy's
determination to be great against a teacher's unreasonable
requirements for perfection.
| |
Dad's Preview:
At
the heart of this intense psychological drama is the question:
"How much is too much, when expecting true greatness?"
Can a teacher berate and verbally abuse a student to bring out
their best? I've never winced so much watching a
film. J. K. Simmon's Oscar-winning performance seethes like open
wound... but he drives the plot. This superb film's final

is unforgettable.

Plot Summary:
Driving a car across country, young Jim Halsey picks up a
hitchhiker who reveals himself to be a dangerous serial killer.
After Jim narrowly escapes, the relentless hitchhiker proceeds
to stalk him, leaving a trail of bodies in his wake and framing
Jim for his crimes. Now pursued by the police and the killer,
Jim's only hope for survival and clearing his name lies in the
aid of a truck stop waitress named Nash.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is the ultimate cautionary tale regarding why you should
never pick up a hitchhiker. It is brutal and a little
unrealistic, but that's what movies are for. No matter what the
young protagonist (delightfully portrayed by C. Thomas Howell) does, he cannot escape the homicidal maniac
who enjoys toying with his prey. I must point out that there is a "I
can't believe that just happened" moment... and it is very
disturbing. Intense actor Rutger Hauer really is a terrifying
menace here. This film is an exceptional horror-thriller. |

Plot Summary:
The film follows a retiring detective, William Somerset, and his
newly transferred partner, David Mills, as they investigate a

rooted in the seven deadly sins, with each victim representing
one of the vices. As the detectives delve deeper into the

increasingly dark and disturbing turn.

Dad's Preview:
I have always loved films and books about mass murderers. Sick,
huh?. Still, I'm interested in the killer's motives and the
detective's research to apprehend the criminal. This film,

pretty decent job in his role, but Freeman and Spacey carry the
film. The ending, as you might guess, is quite harrowing.

Sergeant Raymond Shaw receives the Medal of Honor, thanks to
Captain Ben Marco's recommendation. Marco, and many of the men

This exercise in Cold

are several scenes that are shocking, even by today's standards.
There is nothing more terrifying to any American than the
thought of being mentally manipulated to betray their loved

Dad's Preview:
Everyone loves a good ghost story. This is Spielberg's version

The original 1956 film was creepy. This remake is downright terrifying.
Plot Summary:
A San Francisco health inspector, Matthew Bennell, and his

and empathy. As the alien takeover spreads throughout the city,
Bennell and Driscoll, along with two friends, must attempt to

Dad's Preview:
The premise alone is too unbearable to
imagine. The filmmakers succeed in creating the sense of dread
from the
original 1956 film, but it is much more unnerving,
which elevates this masterpiece. The ending will stay in your mind for

a key to this film's success. |

Welcome to Haddonfield, Illinois. A few years back a young boy,
Michael, killed his teenage sister on Halloween night. He was
sent away. Fifteen years later, Michael escapes and returns to
his hometown. Hot on his trail is Dr. Samuel Loomis, a

doctor knows that Michael is mentally beyond reach, and he will
leave a lot of bodies in his wake.

Dad's Preview:
In 1979, I was always looking for a way to get a date to dig
her hands into my arm.
Horror movies were ideal for that purpose. This film, holy crap,
it made previous "scary" movies seem like a Disney
flick. This journey into terror, may be the
scariest film ever made. After Halloween, the term "slasher
film" became a thing, even its own horror genre. For all the
jumps and murders, there is very little blood on screen.
When we see Michael Myers,
in that freakin' white mask, it still sends chills up our spines!
Luckily, Jamie Lee Curtis was there to survive, and go
on to star in several of the many sequels to follow. |

Dad's Full (Spoiler) Review
and Deep Dive of Schindler's List
"They came with nothing.
Nothing. And they flourished. For six centuries there has been a
Jewish Krakow. Think about that.
By this evening those six
centuries are a rumor. They never happened. Today is history." –
SS 2nd LT Amon Göth
Why watch this?
... to remember, and not let it happen again - EVER on this
Earth.
Plot Summary:
During World War II in German-occupied Poland, a German
industrialist named Oskar Schindler arrives in Kraków seeking to
make his fortune amidst the war's chaos. Initially driven by
profit, he establishes a factory employing Jewish workers,
seeing them as a source of cheap labor. As the Nazi regime
intensifies its persecution of Jews, Schindler is confronted
with the atrocities of the Holocaust and undergoes a profound
moral transformation.

Dad's Preview:
How do you tell a story so horrible it defies belief? As
honestly as you can. Many films have referenced the Holocaust,
using it as a backdrop. However, no film more directly
confronts humanity's most devastating chapter than this
dark, necessary effort. It recounts fascist Germany's creation of the Płaszów
concentration camp during World War II. The Jews sent there
endured total upheaval, horrible prison conditions and merciless
torture by Nazi camp officials. It was horrific. Director
Steven Spielberg, himself a Jew, had to commit this story to film, and
his effort is a masterpiece on both inhuman depravity and the
courageous human spirit. |

to see that certain humans can be as good as others are cruel.
Plot Summary: This
drama follows a severely deformed man, John Merrick, who lives
as a sideshow attraction in Victorian London. A compassionate
surgeon, Dr. Frederick Treves, takes Merrick under his care at a
London Hospital. There, John slowly reveals his intelligence,
sensitivity, and desire for acceptance as a human being. The
film explores themes of dignity and societal attitudes towards
disability through Merrick's journey to find a place in society
beyond being a curiosity.

Dad's Preview:
This is the true story of John Merrick, who lived in
1800's England, and was severely deformed. We
witness how horrible
people with disabilities were treated in that era. It was a
wise choice to present this cinematic masterpiece in black and white. It
is quite
beautiful and sets the period's mood perfectly. It was
nominated for 8 Oscars, but failed to win a single one (truly a crime). |

Why watch this?
The actual exorcism scenes are terrifying.
Plot Summary:
When a young girl begins to exhibit disturbing and violent
behavior, her mother seeks both medical and psychiatric help
without success. As the girl's condition worsens, manifesting in
bizarre and terrifying ways, the desperate mother turns to the
Catholic Church. Ultimately, two priests, one older and
experienced and the other facing a crisis of faith, are called
upon to confront the mysterious entity possessing the child.

Dad's Preview:
This film is not for children, and perhaps not even for people
of strong faith. It is disturbing on so many levels. That said,
it's still one of my top films. Here we see
the battle of good versus evil, as played out for the soul of a
young, innocent girl. When the possession fully manifests, you
will be shaken to your very core, as the devil himself would
want it. |
