"No pleasure, no pain... no
emotion, no heart. Our superior in every way." - Dr.
Carrington regarding the alien
Why watch this? For
the 1950's, this film, about an alien bent on Earth's take-over,
created some eerie chills.
Plot Summary:
At the North Pole,
the Air Force discovers that an alien craft has crash landed
into the pole's ice. Upon the crash site inspection, the ship is
inadvertently destroyed, however a "being" is found frozen
within the ice. They dig out an ice block containing the strange
thing and transport it back to the base in Anchorage, Alaska.
That turns out to be a bad idea. When thawed, the creature,
whose cells resemble vegetable matter, awakens and is not intent
on peaceful co-existence. Against the lead scientist's desire to
make friends, the Air Force commander determines they
must find a way to destroy the human blood-seeking organism
before it can grow more of itself to take over the Earth.
Dad's Preview:
This is the first film adaptation of the story,
Who Goes There?, by John W. Campbell. There
are a few tense and scary moments, yet (like many films of that
time) the military men are a little too concerned with witty
banter in the face of certain death. That said, The Thing
from Another World is hailed as a horror classic. It was
eventually remade by John Carpenter as 1982's
The Thing starring Kurt
Russell and a lot of gory special effects.
