Alfred W. Jones appears in the 1860 Louisiana census in Carroll parish p. 405, place is given as Floyd P.O. A Windham family tradition (as told to me by my mother and grandmother) states that Alfred was shot and killed by his brother-in-law's when, in a drunken state, he attempted to kills his wife and newborn daughter, Laura Lou Jones (future wife of Tom Windham). He was angry because he wanted a son, not another daughter. After that gruesome instant divorce, Eleanor's brothers took her and little Laura Lou with them to Texas.  Eleanor's first husband was Marzamine M. FLOYD (b. 1809, SC; d. 1858), and they had 4 children (Mary E. Floyd, Barbara A. Floyd, Emma Floyd and Eleanor Floyd; all born in Carroll Parish, LA). Therefore, her last name was Floyd when she married Alfred JONES.  After Alfred's death, Eleanor married an Englishman, John R. MITCHELL (b. 1841, England; d. 1876, Floyd, Carroll Parish, LA), on July 12, 1871 in Floyd, Carroll Parish, LA. They had one daughter, Maggie A. Mitchell (b. Jan 1873, LA). Five years later, John died, in 1876, in Floyd, Carroll Parish, LA.  Alfred also purchased land in 1859, filed Dec 7 at Monroe land office.   This obituary is from East Texas Roots on rootsweb: BIOGRAPHY: TIDBIT; "THE STAR, Friday, June 21, 1901 DEATHS: Mrs. Ellen Mitchell, mother of Oscar P and Sidney Jones, Mrs. Tom Windham, and Mrs. William Sanders died at the residence of their last named daughter, north of Abilene, June 10th.
