Norman C. Brinkley remarried in 1949 to his brother Marvin's widow, Lucile (Cooley) Brinkley.

The real story however appears to be the many husbands of Orah Jean Scales, Norman Brinkley's first wife. In her 70 years, she married seven times. She first married about 1919 to Otis B. Harris. They had two daughters: Eunice Beryle Harris and Betty Jo Harris. The family is found on the 1930 Austin Texas census. Curiously, her name is listed as "Orah N." In March 1934, 30 year-old Ora Jean Scales married 23 year-old James A. Lumly in Wake Co, NC, but that union did not last long. In October of 1935, she married W. H. Ingram in Durham, NC . In October 1938, Ora Jean Scales married Hal Olen Gurganous in Wake County, NC. Our Norman C. Brinkley married Jean Scales Gurganous in 1942 in Danville, Virginia. Four years later, at age 44, she married Herman BYRD in Wake County, NC. Finally, at age 52, she married Paul H. Tippman in Los Angeles, California.
