Honorable Mention

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), Director: David Fincher, rated PG-13 for war violence, language

Life isn't measured in minutes, but in moments

Film ClipStarring: Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Mahershala Ali, Taraji P. Henson, Julia Ormond, Jason Flemyng, Elias Koteas, Tilda Swinton

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - great

"It's funny how sometimes the people we remember the least make the greatest impression on us" - Benjamin Button

Why watch this? The concept is so uniquely original - that and its stellar cast.

Plot Summary: This tells the story of a man who ages in reverse, born as an old man and growing physically younger over time. Abandoned by his father, he is raised in a nursing home and experiences life and relationships from a unique perspective.

Dad's Preview: I love this creative film about a baby who is born in 1918, with the appearance and illnesses of an old man. As the years go by, he grows younger. We follow him through adventures and romances. It's painful, especially as the reality sets in that he will soon be returned to a baby, his life forgotten, his body needing infantile care. Living a life in reverse carries a sadness to it, and that should help us value time, and spend it more prudently.

Mary Poppins (1964), Director: Robert Stevenson, rated G

It's supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - great

"First of all I would like to make one thing perfectly clear... I never explain anything." - Mary Poppins

Why watch this? This timeless Disney classic will leave a big smile on your face.

Plot Summary: In Edwardian London, two mischievous children, Jane and Michael Banks, are in need of a new nanny. Their stern father and busy mother struggle to find someone who can manage them. Unexpectedly, the magical Mary Poppins arrives, bringing order and delight into their lives through songs and fantastical adventures. With her help, and alongside her good friend Bert, the children learn valuable lessons and the family begins to rediscover the importance of joy and connection.

Dad's Preview: In my youth, I avoided this film like the plague. Then my son's high school put on its production and I am happy to admit that I finally get it. It's not just a pointless series of catchy tunes, dance routines, and cartoon-inserted penguins. It has a wonderful, poignant story. For you see, it is not really about Miss Poppins and the children - I will let you figure the rest out on your own. I highly suggest viewing the wonderful film Saving Mr. Banks (2013), for more insight.

Liar Liar (1997), Director: Tom Shadyac, rated PG-13 for strong language, sexuality

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - great

"I'm kicking my ass! Do you mind?" -  Fletcher Reede, when asked what he's doing in the men's room

Why watch this? Jim Carrey's conduct in the courtroom is one for the ages. Buckle up!

Plot Summary: Fletcher Reede, a fast-talking lawyer, relies on lies to succeed in his career and often disappoints his young son, Max. After Fletcher misses Max's birthday party, Max makes a wish that his father would be unable to lie for one day. The wish comes true, forcing Fletcher to navigate his life and a crucial court case without being able to utter a single untruth.

Dad's Preview: This is one of Carrey's funnier films, and that is saying plenty. He's at the top of his out-of-freaking-control game here, as a lawyer who, thanks to his son's birthday wish, has been cursed to not lie for an entire day... and he's a slimy defense attorney. He cannot politely lie to the beggar outside the courthouse, or to the woman who asks how she looks. He also cannot bear false witness about his buxom client whole demands custody of her children, even though she's been sleeping with half of L.A. Carrey milks this fertile comedy cow for all she's worth. The courtroom finale is one for the record books.

Oh, God! (1977), Director: Carl Reiner, rated G

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - great

"The last miracle I did was the 1969 Mets. Before that, I think you have to go back to the Red Sea." – God

Why watch this? It's nice to see a rendition of God that is not fiery or political.

Plot Summary: Jerry Landers is an unassuming supermarket manager, who receives a surprising summons from God himself. God, appearing as a kindly older man, chooses Jerry to be his messenger to spread a simple message to the world: that things can work if people try harder and be kinder to each other. Despite facing skepticism from the media, religious authorities, and even his own family, Jerry endeavors to fulfill his divine assignment.

Dad's Preview: Maybe the sweetest movie ever about our creator. It's a simple premise: God appears to a regular guy - a supermarket manager named Jerry. God tells him to spread the Word, and Jerry does. It doesn't take long before all around him, chiefly religious experts, begin to get angry over his proclamations. This all lands the innocent Jerry in a courtroom where he has to prove that he's not lying (and that God exists). I was so impressed with singer John Denver as Jerry. His performance is so very honest and genuine. The courtroom scene is simply divine.

Big (1988), Director: Penny Marshall, rated PG

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★★☆ - near perfect

"I'm your best friend. What's more important than that, huh?" - Billy

Why watch this? It's a modern day fairy tale about a wish that actually comes true.

Plot Summary: This tale centers on a young boy named Josh Baskin who, frustrated with his young age, makes a wish to be "big". He wakes up the next day to find himself transformed into an adult. He now must navigate the challenges and wonders of adulthood while trying to find a way to reverse the magical transformation. With the help of Billy, his best friend, he must find the mystical machine that granted his wish.

Dad's Preview: Early in Tom Hanks' film career this comedic role was a perfect fit. His shtick then was essentially acting like a kid in an adult's body, so Big was ideal. Through some strange magic, Josh gets his wish, and wakes up an adult. Let the hilarity ensue. It's a lot of fun watching Hanks - how he interacts with this 10-year-old best friend; his innocence at a toy store; his excitement (and inexperience) with an adult woman who shows affection for him. There are many warm and funny moments in this superb coming-of-age classic.

What Dreams May Come (1998), Director: Vincent Ward, rated PG-13 for mature themes

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★★☆ - near perfect

"Bring Mom back. You can do it. I believe in you. Did you ever stop to think why I became Albert? He was the only man you ever listened to. Listen to me now. Think of Mom." - Albert

Why watch this? This is about love and pain and saving your spouse, even after death.

Plot Summary: Chris dies in an accident. He enters a vibrant afterlife shaped by his colorful memories and imagination. He discovers his beloved wife, Annie, distraught by her losses, has committed suicide and is trapped in a dark, twisted version of the afterlife. Driven by love, Chris embarks on a perilous journey through these realms to rescue her.

Dad's Preview: A truly thought-provoking film about life after death, and a possible version of where we might go. The after-world is overwhelmingly beautiful, like living in an oil painting. There is sweet happiness there and welcomed reunions. However, there's also a darkness. This film really exposed Robin Williams as a serious dramatic actor. Visually, it's breathtaking.

"I don't understand. All my life I've been waiting for someone and when I find her, she's... she's... a fish." - Allen Bauer

Why watch this? It's the best guy-falls-in-love-with-mermaid film... ever, and I stand by that.

Plot Summary: A young man named Allen Bauer is reunited with a mermaid who saved him from drowning as a boy. She follows him to New York City and takes on human form, and they fall in love. However, her true identity as a mermaid remains a secret that a persistent scientist is determined to expose.

Dad's Preview: Plop! This interesting Rom-Com dropped out of thin air. A regular guy meets a beautiful girl, then learns her disarming secret – she's a mermaid. How the heck is this going to work? That question is the film's central theme. The answer, of course, is that true love conquers all, right? Maybe, but it's never easy. So put on your trunks and dive into this sweet flick about having the courage to love who you love, regardless of what others think.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001), Director: Chris Columbus, rated PG

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - great

"I think it's clear that we can expect great things from you." – Mr. Ollivander, to Harry

Why watch this? ... it's the world-building intro to the world-wide phenomenon.

Plot Summary: Harry Potter, an orphan living with his neglectful aunt and uncle, discovers on his eleventh birthday that he is a wizard and is invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There, he makes new friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, and learns about his parents' death at the hands of the evil wizard Voldemort. Together, the trio embarks on a quest to protect the powerful Sorcerer's Stone from falling into the wrong hands, leading to a series of magical challenges and dangerous discoveries.

Dad's Preview: Harry Potter generated a lot of negative buzz by the conservatives about witchcraft (as usual). I myself did not read the books. So, when this long-anticipated film hit theaters, I was pleasantly surprised, enthralled, and amazed. It is a superbly crafted tale, introducing us to young characters (who, through the years, we will watch grow to adulthood). The three leads, and most of the roles, were perfectly cast - by the final film we'll see just how perfectly. This series would become the new fantasy film high-bar for years to come.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Director: Chris Columbus, rated PG

Something Evil Has Returned To Hogwarts!

Film ClipStarring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emily Watson, Rubert Grint, Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Alan Rickman

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆ - good

"It is not our abilities that show what we truly are... it is our choices" – Dumbledore

Why watch this? Not the best of the series, but still a good watch.

Plot Summary: In their second year at Hogwarts, Harry, Ron, and Hermione discover that the legendary Chamber of Secrets has been opened, leading to students being attacked and petrified. As mysterious voices haunt the castle, a message in blood appears, warning of the heir of Slytherin and the chamber's evil contents. To save Hogwarts from closing, the trio bravely investigates the unfolding events, confronting dangerous creatures and uncovering a secret from the school's dark past.

Dad's Preview: This film, directed by Chris Columbus, though a tad overlong, takes its time to get where it's going. It allows our central characters to hone their acting skills. We are introduced to two new Potter-landers: Gilderoy Lockhart and the CGI-created Dobby, a house-elf charged with protecting Harry. We also learn more about ex-Hogwarts student Tom Riddle, who may be someone important to the series. Finally, this film will make your skin crawl if you are afraid of spiders and/or snakes.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Director: Alfonso Cuarσn, rated PG

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★★☆ - near perfect

"Well, Well, Lupin. Out for a little walk... in the moonlight are we?" - Professor Snape

Why watch this? This film notably changed in tone from the first two. It's more grown-up.

Plot Summary: In their third year at Hogwarts, Harry, Ron, and Hermione learn that a dangerous prisoner named Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban, a wizarding prison guarded by the terrifying Dementors. It is widely believed that Black, a supposed follower of Lord Voldemort, intends to harm Harry, causing a heightened sense of danger throughout the wizarding world and Hogwarts itself. As the year progresses, Harry and his friends unravel a complex web of events surrounding Black's imprisonment and the true nature of the threat he poses, ultimately revealing a story of betrayal.

Dad's Preview: There is so much that works in the third installment. Alfonso Cuarσn, an Academy Award-winning director, takes things in a darker, more moody direction. The lead actors feel more at home in their roles. And it's always a good idea to add Gary Oldman to a cast. Where the first two films are bright, the third gets scary as an escaped manic appears to be hunting Harry. The ghastly, black dementors are circling Hogwarts, and also have a thing for Mr. Potter. All this feels like the stage is being readied for the return of the evil Lord Voldemort.

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - great

"I haven't a clue who put your name in that goblet, Harry, but whoever did is no friend to you. People die in this tournament." - Sirius Black

Why watch this? As the young wizards become teens, things start to get real.

Plot Summary: Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts takes a dangerous turn when he is unexpectedly chosen to compete in the Triwizard Tournament, a perilous competition against students from other wizarding schools. Facing a dragon, a challenge in a lake, and an enchanted maze, Harry must navigate these tasks while suspicions grow around his unexplained entry into the tournament. As the competition progresses, a sinister plot unfolds, leading Harry to confront a dark wizard.

Dad's Preview: It's great to see nerdy Rupert Grint sporting a lovely red mop hairstyle. In this film the lead characters' personalities shine amid the awkward interactions with the opposite sex as the Tri-Wizard Tournament takes center stage. This marks another change in the series when, for the first time, a central character is actually murdered, and that devious deed was conducted by none other than He Who Must Not Be Named.

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - great

"As I have told you before, Mr. Potter, naughty children deserve to be punished." - Dolores Umbridge

Why watch this? Two great villains emerge - Dolores Umbridge and Bellatrix Lestrange.

Plot Summary: Harry struggles with the Ministry of Magic's denial of Voldemort's return and their subsequent smear campaign against him and Dumbledore. To combat the Ministry's interference and a new, oppressive Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Harry forms a secret student group, Dumbledore's Army, to teach and learn proper defensive spells. As Harry's connection to Voldemort deepens, he's plagued by unsettling visions which ultimately lead him and his friends into a dangerous confrontation at the Ministry of Magic, where truths about prophecies and Voldemort's plan are revealed.

Dad's Preview: As teen awkwardness migrates into full on teen angst, the story richens with better character moments, such as Harry's soulful conversations with his godfather Sirius Black. Hogwarts receives a new professor, Ms. Umbridge, a merciless tyrant who takes over the school and insures that Harry et al are tortured at every turn. We also get a more personal look at the dark arts wizards known as Death Eaters. They take human form and are led chiefly by Bellatrix Lestrange and Lucius Malfoy.

"Why is it, whenever something happens, it is always you three?" - Professor McGonagall

Why watch this? The sixth film is darker than its predecessors.

Plot Summary: Lord Voldemort is tightening his grip on the wizarding and Muggle worlds, with Hogwarts no longer a safe haven. Harry suspects danger within the school, but Dumbledore focuses on preparing him for the final battle and recruits former Potions master Horace Slughorn for vital information about Voldemort's past. Meanwhile, teenage romance blossoms among the students as a darker path unfolds for one, leading to tragedy that may forever change Hogwarts.

Dad's Preview: The time has come to usher in the return of Lord Voldemort. There is also a lot of time spent searching for magical trinkets known as 'Horcruxes', which are essentially parts of Tom Riddle's soul. The pressure on Harry has become almost overwhelming, with every thought and conversation having more weight to it. The film's cinematography is wonderful, and it perfectly sets up the final, bleak chapter coming in the final Deathly Hallows films.

"I'm always mad at him." - Hermione, speaking of her beloved Ron

Why watch this? This is the Harry Potter film people either like or hate. I'm a fan.

Plot Summary: Harry, Ron, and Hermione embark on a mission to find and destroy Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes, which are fragments of his soul hidden in various objects. They face constant danger as Voldemort and his Death Eaters have seized control of the Ministry of Magic and are hunting them down. The trio's reliance on each other is tested as they face personal challenges and the ever-present threat of being captured or killed.

Dad's Preview: After so many films that contained high-quality, magical, action-filled material, this effort almost seems like an art-house indie. It is very personal, showing our lead characters wandering around, frustrated that they are not finding all the Horcruxes. I think this was an effective way to expose the audience to what the trio have been facing all along: confusion, uncertainty, frustration, mixed emotions. Our three, young, embattled wizards are in their darkest hour - coming face to face with a bleak loneliness. Could other topics have been explored better? Maybe, but this film works just fine in my book, and it cleanses the palate for the upcoming epic finale.

"Silence! Stupid girl. Harry Potter is dead. From this day forth, you put your faith in me." - Lord Voldemort

Why watch this? The pinnacle film, about the legendary Harry Potter, does satisfy!

Plot Summary: Our Hogwarts heroes and heroines continue their dangerous quest to find and destroy the remaining Horcruxes, the magical items that grant Voldemort immortality. As they close in on their mission, a major battle erupts at Hogwarts, forcing them to return and defend the school from Voldemort's evil forces. Ultimately, Harry must face his destiny and confront Voldemort in a final, climactic showdown to determine the fate of the wizarding world.

Dad's Preview: All that led up to the final film had me a little worried. There were so many story lines, so many sub-plots to wrap up. How could they pull it off? I think it was wise to use Part 1 as the calm before the storm, and have part 2 feature the final, epic wizard battle. The filmmakers also made sure to give the audience what it deserved: Nevel's heroic emergence, Molly Weasley's battle with Bellatrix, and the one I waited for most of all: Ron and Hermione's first kiss!.

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★★☆ - near perfect

"I want it over and done. I do. I'm tired, boss. Tired of bein' on the road, lonely as a sparrow in the rain. Tired of not ever having me a buddy to be with, or tell me where we's coming from or going to, or why. Mostly I'm tired of people being ugly to each other. I'm tired of all the pain I feel and hear in the world everyday. There's too much of it. It's like pieces of glass in my head all the time." - John Coffey

Why watch this? Death row. A perfect place for the unusual to occur.

Plot Summary: In Depression-era Louisiana, a death row prison guard encounters a seemingly gentle giant inmate accused of a horrific crime. This inmate, John Coffey, possesses a mysterious and powerful gift, leading the guard and his colleagues to question his guilt and the nature of justice. The story unfolds through their interactions, revealing supernatural events and exploring themes of compassion and redemption.

Dad's Preview: With many Stephen King books, that eventually makes it to the screen, there is some initial trepidation, as if a horror novelist cannot possibly craft deep stories that are complex and metaphorical. But the simple fact is that Mr. King is a great writer - Period. This prison fantasy drama is an allegorical masterpiece. In even the worst place on earth, a death row ward, there can be small miracles... maybe that is the best place for miracles. The cast is stellar, and I must conclude by recognizing Michael Clarke Duncan - his performance is unforgettable, as John Coffey, a mountain of a man with the heart, and eternal pains, of an angel.

Why watch this? There are mind-trip films - then there is this chaotic eye-candy.

During a stressful IRS audit, she discovers, with help from her husband, the existence of the multi-verse. To her amazement, she can access the memories, skills, and experiences of her alternative selves across countless universes. Evelyn is tasked with using these newfound abilities to fight against a powerful being threatening to destroy the multiverse, while also navigating complex family relationships, particularly with her daughter, Joy.

Dad's Preview: I read about this film, and purchased the Blu-ray disc before seeing it. I was THAT sure a) it would be great, and b) I would love it. Both were correct. It's unlike any film I have ever seen, anywhere, anytime. "In the absence of light, darkness prevails. There are things that go bump in the night, Agent Myers. Make no mistake about that. And we are the ones who bump back." – Professor Broom

Why watch this? It's a great comic book hero adapted to film. Pearlman is awesome!

Plot Summary: Raised by a professor after being summoned to Earth by Nazis during World War II, a demon named Hellboy now works for a secretive government organization known as the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Alongside his fellow unique agents, Hellboy must protect the world from various supernatural threats that emerge from the shadows. However, his skills and fiery personality are truly tested when a powerful, resurrected sorcerer from his past returns with a sinister plan that seeks to unleash the apocalypse.

Dad's Preview: Being a comic book reader, I found my way to Mike Mignola's Hellboy. I read one story arc and was hooked. I love how Hellboy is written, his origin, the occult influence, everything. This movie dropped in theaters and was a huge hit. I couldn't be happier. Sure, you have to get over the fact that he's red and has horns growing out of his skull. After that, it's a big bowl of fun. "Ray, people will come, Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom." - Terence Mann

Why watch this? It's both so American... and so magical.

Plot Summary: Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella is inspired by a voice he hears in his cornfield to build a baseball diamond. Despite skepticism and financial hardship, he pursues this vision with the support of his wife. His journey leads him to encounter figures from the past and present, all linked by their dreams and the game of baseball.

Dad's Preview: In the late '80's Costner was on fire. This classic followed Bull Durham (1988), another flick about baseball. Well, this is more about the legends of baseball. A good, ordinary man feels called to follow a crazy idea. And for once, he trusts it, even when things don't make sense. That is where the magic happens. This sentimental movie is beautifully shot and acted. Thank you, Burt Lancaster, for your lovely performance as Doc "Moonlight" Graham.

DML Top 50 #22 - Dad's Full (Spoiler) Review and Rabbit Hole of Monty Python and the Holy Grail

"We better not risk another frontal assault. That rabbit's dynamite!" - King Arthur

Why watch this? This irreverent, Medieval comedy from Python is legendary.

Plot Summary: King Arthur gathers his Knights of the Round Table and is instructed by God to embark on a quest to find the Holy Grail. Their journey is filled with absurd and surreal encounters, including taunting French soldiers, the Black Knight, a killer rabbit, and the Knights Who Say Ni. The film follows their individual and collective misadventures as they brave various obstacles in pursuit of the mythical relic.

Dad's Preview: This may seem adolescent, but I am certain there is genius within some offensive comedies. Said genius is on par with classic films, the likes of Casablanca (1942), Pulp Fiction (1994), Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010). However, critics will always dismiss these gems as "in poor taste", "vulgar" or "you need therapy". I get it - not classy enough... One too many jokes about flatulence. Fie! What a disservice! Holy Grail is entertaining from start to finish. It will always make ME laugh, and therein lies its genius.

"The Boss's husband is just playing a little game with you. Believe me, sooner or later, every pig gets eaten. That's the way the world works. Oh, I haven't upset you, have I?" - Dutchess (the cat)

Why watch this? It's so sweet and endearing. You will love this pink little piglet.

Plot Summary: This is the story of a piglet won by Farmer Hoggett at a county fair. The pink porker finds a home on the farm and bonds with a sheepdog named Fly. Babe, against the expectations of his kind, learns that he too can herd sheep. He must then gain acceptance from the other farm animals who question his unusual abilities.

Dad's Preview: This is another film my kids loved. It's about a delightful little orphaned pig who is trained to, of all things, herd sheep. The film-makers deployed CGI technology to enable the barnyard animals to speak to each other. It's done well and not over-the-top. I enjoyed hearing the thoughts and feelings of common farm animals. James Cromwell's performance as Farmer Hogget is really special. Babe, voiced by Christine Cavanaugh, steals the show. "Baa Ram Ewe!"

"We should lock the door and scream that curse word we know. It's a good one!" - Anger

Why watch this? This may be the most creative film yet from Disney and Pixar.

Plot Summary: An 11-year-old girl, Riley, moves with her family from Minnesota to San Francisco. The story explores the inner workings of her mind, where her emotions — Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust — live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley's brain, and guide her actions. As Riley struggles to adjust to her new life, turmoil ensues in Headquarters, leading Joy and Sadness on an adventure through Riley's mind.

Dad's Preview: The creators of this wonderful Pixar offering take us into the mind of a teenage girl, just as her simple, happy life is about go haywire thanks to a move from Minnesota to California. Her first day of school does not go well. Meanwhile, we are transported into her brain's control room. There, the five emotions, Joy, Anger, Fear, Sadness, and Disgust, are in charge. Well, sort of. The emotions are voiced by some great stars. You will love this film, and its perspective, regarding how the mind works. You'll shed a few tears, as well.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), Director: Robert Zemeckis, rated PG

It's the story of a man, a woman, and a rabbit in a triangle of trouble.

"I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way." – Jessica Rabbit

Why watch this? ... to watch, in awe, the genius it took to intertwine humans and cartoons into the same celluloid space.

Plot Summary: In 1947 Los Angeles, where cartoons and humans coexist, a private detective who loathes toons takes a case involving a rabbit toon star accused of murder. As the detective investigates, he uncovers a complex conspiracy that threatens the existence of Toontown, the animated metropolis where toons reside.

Dad's Preview: I am always a fan of something new and inventive, even if the effort sometimes falls short. This film is an example where expectations were exceeded. Director Zemeckis creates a 1950s-ish world where humans and cartoons co-exist, and it's business-as-usual. This is an easy film to love. It has all our favorite cartoon characters (Mickey, Donald, Daffy, Porky, etc.), zany slapstick bits, devious villains, a wonderful ending... and let's not forget naughtily-drawn bombshell, Jessica Rabbit.

"I've only been with the company for a couple of weeks, but I gotta tell you: these things are real. Since I joined these men, I have seen shit that'll turn you white! – Winston Zeddemore

Why watch this? It may be the best SNL-cast film ever. It's delightfully creative and fun!

Plot Summary: Three eccentric parapsychologists are fired from their university jobs and decide to start a unique ghost removal service in New York City. As supernatural occurrences escalate throughout the city, they attract a growing clientele and become famous. They must ultimately confront an ancient entity threatening to unleash destruction upon the world.

Dad's Preview: I remember seeing this in a theater in Dimmitt, Texas. I was completely beside myself. It was way more sophisticated than I expected, especially from a couple of SNL lugnuts like Murray and Aykroyd. I realized that these guys were more than just TV comedians - they were real movie-makers, and the world was about to take notice. Once again, Sigourney Weaver shows that she can portray any role given and, with grace and strength, make it her own.

Groundhog Day (2005), Director: Harold Ramis, rated PG

He's having the worst day of his life... over, and over...

Film ClipStarring: Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott, Stephen Tobolowsky, Brian Doyle-Murray, Marita Geraghty, Angela Paton, Rick Overton

DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★★★ - perfect

"I was in the Virgin Islands once. I met a girl. We ate lobster and drank pina coladas. At sunset we made love like sea otters. That was a pretty good day. Why couldn't I get that day over and over and over?" – Phil Connors

Why watch this? Put Bill Murray in any situation and he'll make it funny.

Plot Summary: Phil Connors, a cynical TV weatherman, travels to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities. After a blizzard strands him in the small town, he wakes up the next morning to discover that it is February 2nd all over again. Phil is caught in a mysterious time loop, forcing him to relive the same day repeatedly, and he's the only one aware of the phenomenon. He attempts various methods to escape his predicament, eventually leading him to explore the possibilities and consequences within this looping reality.

Dad's Preview: A modern fairy tale of sorts about a self-centered man who is forced to re-live one day, Groundhog day, over and over. It is a great premise for a comedy, especially in the hands of veteran actor-director Harold Ramis and his buddy, comedian Bill Murray. The film delivers great performances, and plenty of really funny moments as Murray approaches each repeated day a little different than the day before. At first, it's kinda fun, but eventually it starts to drive him nuts. This experience might also help him learn what is really important in life.

DML Top 50 #48 - Dad's Full (Spoiler) Review and Deep Dive of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

"Invention, my dear friends, is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple." - Willie Wonka

Why watch this? A tour through a mysterious chocolate factory. What could happen?

Plot Summary: Young Charlie Bucket, from an impoverished family, dreams of finding one of the five coveted Golden Tickets hidden in Willy Wonka's chocolate bars. Winning a ticket grants a tour of Wonka's mysterious and magical chocolate factory, along with a lifetime supply of candy. Charlie, joining four other children, embarks on a fantastical adventure within the whimsical factory.

Dad's Preview: As addicting as its namesake dessert flavor, this children's film has a lot to say. Not only is this trip as magical as the journey to Oz, it also takes special care to pass along valuable lessons to kids and parents alike: Don't overeat. Too much candy is bad for you. Don't spoil your children. Don't watch too much TV. These "bad" little kids get their cod liver oil. I always thought of myself as the sweet, innocent, and honorable Charlie... but am I? The verdict is still out.

"Um, I guess... if we're gonna date, you may have to defeat my seven evil exes." – Ramona Flowers

Why watch this? There is not a second in this film that I don't love.

Plot Summary: Scott Pilgrim, a slacker musician living in Toronto, finds his comfortable life disrupted when he falls for the mysterious and enigmatic Ramona Flowers. To win her heart, however, he must defeat her seven evil exes, each with their own unique abilities and personalities. This journey forces Scott to confront his own flaws, past relationships, and insecurities, ultimately pushing him toward self-discovery.

Dad's Preview: I had sorta lost faith in the next generation of movies; maybe I was getting old and out of touch. Then I discovered Scott Pilgrim, and my faith was restored! Nestled sweetly within this video game of a story is a very fresh and interesting romance. It's so much fun! The lovingly odd Michael Cera is an amazing understated actor. I love the action, the songs (watch a video of all All Scott Pilgrim musical performances), the premise, its creativity - EVERYTHING!

DML Top 50 #11 - Dad's Full (Spoiler) Review and Deep Dive of It's a Wonderful Life

"Strange isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?" - Clarence the angel

Why watch this? ... You're kidding, right? This holiday classic is so much more than that.

Plot Summary: This holiday classic follows George Bailey, a man who has always put the needs of his small town and its residents before his own ambitions. Through a series of selfless acts, he inadvertently creates a life that, despite its challenges, has a profound impact on those around him. When faced with a crisis that pushes him to his breaking point, an unexpected intervention shows him the true value of his existence and the indelible mark he has made on his community.

Dad's Preview: This really is a wonderful film about a humble man named George Bailey. The world can be cruel to folks who live right and try to always do good things. George, in his despair, feels he has failed everyone, his father, his wife, his town, and most importantly, his dreams. On a snowy night, he prays for help. His answer: a visit from his guardian angel, the kind Clarence Odbody, who grants George his wish to see what life would be like if "I'd never been born". I treasure this Capra film with all my soul. It's message is like life's manna.
