"... you're in the
middle of a war that has been raging for the better part of a
thousand years.
A blood feud between vampires and lycans." -
Selene
Why watch this?
The visuals are amazing in this modern re-telling of a
supernatural feud.
Plot Summary: There
is a hidden war waged for centuries between aristocratic
vampires and brutish Lycans. Selene, an elite vampire warrior,
dedicated to exterminating the Lycans, finds herself attracted
to a human, Michael, who becomes a target of the Lycans for
mysterious reasons. As Selene races to protect Michael, she
uncovers a conspiracy that threatens to ignite a new, even more
devastating chapter in the ancient conflict.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This highly-stylized film focuses on an ongoing battle, fought
unbeknownst to most people, between werewolves and vampires.
Selene is a lethal vampiric Death Dealer. She discovers a young
man who appears to possess characteristics of both sects. She
breaks protocol and awakens Elder vampire Viktor for counsel because she does not
trust their current leader, Kraven. Beckinsale shines as Selene
- strong and bad-ass. Don't wait to sink your fangs into this gothic treasure. |

"First of all, keep

begs, never feed him after midnight."
- Chinese Boy
Why watch this? I
re-watched this recently, and was pleasantly reminded now much I
love these nasty, deadly and devious little creatures.
Plot Summary:
A loving father finds a unique gift to surprise his responsible
teenage son, who happens to have a huge crush a girl he works
with at the bank. The rich, evil town spinster wants his dog so
she can put it down. The father's gift is a small, living
teddy-bearish thing that coos and beeps and even sings little
tunes. They call it Gizmo, and it's A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E. But later
that night, it accidentally gets wet (see quote above), and
starts to multiply. Gizmo's "offspring" aren't quite as nice.
Then the boy accidentally feeds them after midnight...

Dad's Review:
This film starts just like a cutsie film about a puppy for
Christmas. Then this quaint
little holiday movie turns into an action horror flick, as the
gremlins take over the town! It was produced by Stephen
Spielberg and wonderfully directed by Joe Dante, so its quality
is top-notch. The devilish conduct of the rampaging mob of spiny
mini-monsters is very entertaining, even if it ruins Christmas
Day for the local folks. |

Why watch this?
This is Romance Movie Ground Zero.
Plot Summary:
Sam Wheat, a successful banker, is tragically murdered during a
mugging with his girlfriend, Molly Jensen. To his dismay, Sam
finds himself trapped as a ghost, unable to interact with the
living world. When he realizes Molly is in danger and his death
was not random, he seeks the help of Oda Mae Brown, a reluctant
psychic, to communicate with Molly and protect her from the same
people who killed him.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is the perfect date-night film. A woman, Molly,
pines for her dead husband, Sam. Since his murder, he
is a ghost who must wander the earth, a part of
everything, yet unable to
physically connect with (most) people, including his
beloved Molly. The soul of the film is the
true love relationship between Sam and Molly, as we see in a few
clay-splattered flashbacks. However, in a very heavy film, it's Whoopi's comic
interjections that
steal almost every scene. |

Plot Summary:
Blade, the man, is a unique being, possessing vampire
qualities (super strength, invincibility), but none of their
weaknesses (sunlight, silver, garlic), except his need to
consumer human blood. This makes him incredibly adept at hunting
and killing real vampires. He crashes a rave club in Los Angeles
owned by the blood-sucker Deacon Frost. Blade literally mops the
floor with dead vampires, but one manages to bite hematologist
Karen Jenson. Blade takes her to his hideout, where his friend
and ally Whistler, does all he can to keep Karen from turning
into one of the undead. Meanwhile, vampire leadership decides
that their race's survival depends on obtaining Blade's hybrid
blood, followed by his immediate death.

This fang-cy cult classic
is vintage 1990's gothic, cyberpunk film-making. It is shocking
how similar (in tone, black leather and martial arts action
sequences) this is to
The Matrix

Regardless, Blade is a ton of gory fun with lots of
blood, blade-fighting, and exploding bad guys. I can see why it
has such a devoted following. |

Some say lawyers lack a soul. This movies helps that point

Plot Summary:

"We
are a incestuous race. We can only make love with our own,
otherwise we transform.
And before we can become human again, we

Why watch this?
This film is as beautiful as it is horrifying.
Plot Summary: Irina,
an orphaned young woman, travels to New Orleans to reunite with
her estranged brother, Paul. Shortly after her arrival, she
discovers a terrifying family secret: she is descended from an
ancient line of "Cat People," beings who transform into deadly
panthers when sexually aroused. As she navigates this dark
truth, Irina finds herself torn between her attraction to a
human man and the dangerous, incestuous nature of her family
legacy.
| |
Dad's Preview:
I read that David Bowie did the soundtrack, so I gave this film
look. I am very glad I did. This remake of the classic
Cat People (1942)
centers on individuals who are linked
to felines and can transform into black panthers. They are
doomed to kill mortals, because they can only breed outside of
their race. Natassja Kinski captivates in the role of Irena,
which perfectly fits her. The plot follows the original
film, but adds new dimensions that enhance the story, namely the
relationship between Irena, and her brother, Paul (expertly
portrayed by Malcolm McDowell). There are some gorgeous scenes
featuring the large cats. That said, some scenes are graphically
terrifying and will make you flinch. |

Tim Burton is a master at creating a world of the macabre.
Plot Summary: Adam

attempt to scare them away. Their unsuccessful attempts lead
them to seek help from a chaotic spirit named Beetlejuice, whose

Dad's Preview:
This was a great collaboration between macabre director Tim Burton and
comedian Michael Keaton. The bold move here was to basically turn Keaton loose,
capitalizing on his unique style of comedic genius. This
inter-dimensional character is so freaking bizarre. However, it
works. I particularly enjoy the family dinner séance and
demonic Conga dance, but I'm a weirdo. I also cannot forget the Maitland's

Plot Summary: The

learn about each other's lives and build a connection by leaving
notes and messages. When the body-swapping suddenly stops, the
boy goes on a quest to find the girl, only to discover a

Dad's Preview:
This intelligent, completely entertaining sci-fi film covers a
lot, makes you think, and knows what it is: an impossible love
story. It's plot is hard to explain, and that is why it works so
well. The viewer is asked to fill in the blanks, based on an
incomplete set of facts. It eventually gets where it's going,
but is is like savoring a great slice of cheesecake one fork at
a time. The part-CGI-part-traditional animation is truly eye-popping. The soundtrack is
catchy in a kind of 90's vibe. However, it's the creative story that
drives this spanning epic about two longing souls
who somehow cosmically connect, and are forced to battle inner and
outer obstacles to be together. |

"I'm your best friend.

Billy
Why watch this? It's
a modern day fairy tale about a wish that actually comes true.
Plot Summary: This
tale centers on a young boy named Josh Baskin who, frustrated
with his young age, makes a wish to be "big". He wakes up the
next day to find himself transformed into an adult. He now must
navigate the challenges and wonders of adulthood while trying to
find a way to reverse the magical transformation. With the help
of Billy, his best friend, he must find the mystical machine
that granted his wish.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Early in Tom Hanks' film career this comedic role was a perfect
fit. His shtick then was essentially acting like a kid in an
adult's body, so Big was ideal. Through
some strange magic, Josh gets his wish, and wakes up an adult. Let
the hilarity ensue. It's a lot of fun watching Hanks - how he
interacts with this 10-year-old best friend; his innocence at a
toy store; his excitement (and inexperience) with an adult woman
who shows affection for him. There are many warm and funny
moments in this superb coming-of-age classic. |

Why watch this?
A wonderful children's film about life, and death, and the
important in-between.
Plot Summary: A
young boy named Miguel dreams of becoming a musician,
despite his family's long-standing ban on music. On Día

Land of the Dead. There, he embarks on a journey to find
his deceased great-great-grandfather, a legendary
singer, and uncover the truth about his family's past.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Why are we so afraid of death? It is human nature and fear of
the unknown. This delightful, colorful Latino-based film
explores death, and many more very adult topics such as: the
impact a missing father can have, old grudges and the damage
they do, and the importance of pursuing your heart's dream,
regardless of the many naysayers. Yet, children will love it,
too. The Pixar animation, once again, out-does itself. The
choice to zip up and infuse brightness, and life, into the land
of the dead was brilliant. In many ways it is as creative as
Up (2009) or
Inside Out
(2015). The concept of the hereafter is unique and
well-done. We all get to experience Miguel's arduous journey to
be himself, while honoring his family. This film is about as
good as it gets if you are looking for an experience to make you
feel really good inside. |

It is widely believed that Black, a supposed follower of Lord
Voldemort, intends to harm Harry, causing a heightened sense of

Dad's Preview:
There is so much that works in the third installment. Alfonso Cuarón,
an Academy
Award-winning director, takes things in a darker, more moody
direction. The lead actors feel more at home in their roles.
And it's always a good idea to add Gary Oldman to a cast. Where the
first two films are bright, the third gets scary as an escaped
manic appears to be hunting Harry. The ghastly, black dementors
are circling Hogwarts, and also have a thing for Mr. Potter. All
this feels like the stage is being readied for the return of the
evil Lord Voldemort. |

change in the series when, for the first time, a central
character is actually murdered, and that devious
deed was conducted by none other than He Who Must Not Be Named. |

"As I have told you before,
Mr. Potter, naughty children deserve to be punished." -
Dolores Umbridge
Why watch this?
Two great villains emerge - Dolores Umbridge and Bellatrix
Lestrange.
Plot Summary:
Harry struggles with the Ministry of Magic's denial of
Voldemort's return and their subsequent smear campaign against
him and Dumbledore. To combat the Ministry's interference and a
new, oppressive Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Harry
forms a secret student group, Dumbledore's Army, to teach and
learn proper defensive spells. As Harry's connection to
Voldemort deepens, he's plagued by unsettling visions which
ultimately lead him and his friends into a dangerous
confrontation at the Ministry of Magic, where truths about
prophecies and Voldemort's plan are revealed.
| |
Dad's Preview:
As teen awkwardness migrates into full on teen angst, the story
richens with better character moments, such as Harry's soulful
conversations with his godfather Sirius Black. Hogwarts receives
a new professor, Ms. Umbridge, a merciless tyrant who takes over the school and
insures that Harry et al are tortured at every turn. We
also get a more personal look at the dark arts wizards known as Death Eaters.
They take human form and are
led chiefly by Bellatrix Lestrange and Lucius Malfoy. |

"Why is it, whenever
something happens, it is always you three?" - Professor
McGonagall
Why watch this?
The sixth film is darker than its predecessors.
Plot Summary:
Lord Voldemort is tightening his grip on the wizarding and
Muggle worlds, with Hogwarts no longer a safe haven. Harry
suspects danger within the school, but Dumbledore focuses on
preparing him for the final battle and recruits former Potions
master Horace Slughorn for vital information about Voldemort's
past. Meanwhile, teenage romance blossoms among the students as
a darker path unfolds for one, leading to tragedy that may
forever change Hogwarts.
| |
Dad's Preview:
The time has come to usher in the return of Lord Voldemort.
There is also a lot of time spent searching for magical
trinkets known as 'Horcruxes', which are
essentially parts of Tom Riddle's soul. The pressure on Harry
has become almost overwhelming, with every thought and
conversation having more weight to it. The film's cinematography
is wonderful, and it perfectly sets up the final, bleak chapter
coming in the final Deathly Hallows films. |

"I'm always mad at him." -
Hermione, speaking of
her beloved Ron
Why watch this? This
is the Harry Potter film people either like or hate. I'm a fan.
Plot Summary:
Harry, Ron, and Hermione embark on a mission to find and destroy
Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes, which are fragments of his soul
hidden in various objects. They face constant danger as
Voldemort and his Death Eaters have seized control of the
Ministry of Magic and are hunting them down. The trio's reliance
on each other is tested as they face personal challenges and the
ever-present threat of being captured or killed.
| |
Dad's Preview:
After so many films that contained high-quality, magical, action-filled material,
this effort almost seems like an art-house indie. It is very personal, showing our lead characters wandering around,
frustrated that they are not finding all the Horcruxes. I think
this was an effective way to expose the audience to what the
trio have been facing all along: confusion, uncertainty, frustration,
mixed emotions. Our three, young, embattled wizards are in their darkest hour - coming
face to face with a bleak loneliness. Could other topics have
been explored better? Maybe, but this film works just fine in my
book, and it cleanses the palate for the upcoming epic finale. |

"Silence! Stupid girl.

Why watch this?
The pinnacle film, about the legendary Harry Potter, does
satisfy!
Plot Summary:
Our Hogwarts heroes and heroines continue their dangerous quest
to find and destroy the remaining Horcruxes, the magical items
that grant Voldemort immortality. As they close in on their
mission, a major battle erupts at Hogwarts, forcing them to
return and defend the school from Voldemort's evil forces.
Ultimately, Harry must face his destiny and confront Voldemort
in a final, climactic showdown to determine the fate of the
wizarding world.

Dad's Preview:
All that led up to the final film had me a little worried.
There were so many story lines, so many sub-plots to wrap up. How
could they pull it off? I think it was wise to use Part 1 as the
calm before the storm, and have part 2 feature the final,
epic wizard battle. The filmmakers also made sure to give the audience
what it deserved: Nevel's heroic emergence, Molly Weasley's
battle with Bellatrix, and the one I waited for most of all: Ron
and Hermione's first kiss!. |

Why watch this?
It's packed full of action, sci-fi, martial arts and laughs.
Plot Summary:
Trucker Jack Burton gets pulled into a supernatural conflict
when his friend Wang's fiancée is kidnapped in San Francisco's
Chinatown. They discovers an ancient sorcerer named Lo Pan is
behind the abduction, seeking to break a curse that keeps him in
spirit form. Jack, Wang and their allies must battle mystical
forces and formidable foes to save the girl and stop Lo Pan's
sinister plan.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This was Carpenter's last great film IMHO. It has a little bit of
everything: heroes, damsels, martial arts, Chinese mysticism,
hairy 8-foot monsters, floating zombie heads, you know, the usual. Russell is iconic as
Jack T. Burton, an over-confident truck driver who waaayyy
over-estimates his charm. Still, there's a lot to love about
him. Dennis Dun, as Wang, keep's Burton under control, while James Hong is also superb as the evil sorcerer Lo Pan. |

awesome!
Plot Summary:
Raised by a professor after being summoned to Earth by Nazis
during World War II, a demon named Hellboy now works for a
secretive government organization known as the Bureau for
Paranormal Research and Defense. Alongside his fellow unique
agents, Hellboy must protect the world from various supernatural

Being a comic book reader, I found my way to
Mike Mignola's
Hellboy. I read one story arc and was hooked. I
love how Hellboy is written, his origin, the occult influence,
everything. This movie dropped in theaters and was a
huge hit. I couldn't be happier. Sure, you have to get over the
fact that he's red and has horns growing out of his skull. After
that, it's a big bowl of fun. Ron Perlman is an American
treasure. This film also introduced me to (now Oscar-winning)
director Guillermo del Toro. |

Why watch this?
It's dark and gothic, yet shining through is Jason Lee's charismatic

Plot Summary: Eric
Draven, a musician, is brutally murdered along with his
fiancée the night before their wedding. A year later,
Eric is resurrected by a mystical crow, gaining
supernatural powers. Guided by the crow, he seeks
vengeance on the criminals who killed him and his
fiancée. His only tether to humanity is his young

Dad's Preview:
This anti-hero film just grabbed me and wedged itself into my
soul. The story originated in
The Crow comics by James O.
Barr. There is such a sadness to this origin story. Things get
violent as vengeance is extracted, but the film never loses its
tenderness. Lead actor Jason Lee, the son of martial arts legend
Bruce Lee, was accidentally killed
during filming. Thank goodness they were able to finish this
treasure. |

"Ray, people will come, Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons
they can't even fathom." - Terence Mann
Why watch this?
It's both so American... and so magical.
Plot Summary: Iowa
farmer Ray Kinsella is inspired by a voice he hears in his
cornfield to build a baseball diamond. Despite skepticism and
financial hardship, he pursues this vision with the support of
his wife. His journey leads him to encounter figures from the
past and present, all linked by their dreams and the game of
baseball.

Dad's Preview:
In the late '80's Costner was on fire. This
classic followed
Bull
Durham (1988), another flick about baseball. Well, this is more about the
legends of baseball. A good, ordinary man feels called to follow a crazy
idea. And for once, he trusts it, even when things don't make sense.
That is where the magic happens. This sentimental movie is beautifully shot and acted.
Thank you, Burt Lancaster, for your lovely performance as Doc

"The Kurgan. He is the

- Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez
Why watch this? ... the wonderful blend of history
and sci-fi sets this action film apart.
Plot Summary:
Connor MacLeod, a 16th-century Scottish Highlander, discovers
that he is immortal after surviving a seemingly fatal battle
wound. He is trained by another immortal named Ramirez, who
explains that immortals can only be killed by decapitation and
are destined to fight each other until only a few remain for
The Gathering. In 1985 New York City, Connor must face his
ancient nemesis, the evil Kurgan, in a final battle for the
ultimate Prize.
| |
Dad's Preview:
The mid 80's hatched a sea of action films ranging from good to
bad, most of the bad films being rip-offs of something that was
a surprise success. Highlander was definitely one of the good
ones thanks to its creative plot and, of course, Sean Connery. It
is part old-world adventure, science fiction and gritty crime
drama. It covers a lot ground (and time periods), but never stops being fun. I love
the performances from Connery and the over-the-top Clancy Brown, as the
demonic immortal, Kurgan. |

Why watch this?
It may be the best SNL-cast film ever. It's delightfully creative and fun!
Plot Summary:
Three eccentric parapsychologists are fired from their

throughout the city, they attract a growing clientele and become
famous. They must ultimately confront an ancient entity
threatening to unleash destruction upon the world.

I remember seeing this in a theater in Dimmitt, Texas. I was
completely beside myself. It was way more sophisticated than I
expected, especially from a couple of SNL lugnuts like Murray and Aykroyd. I
realized that these guys were more than just TV comedians - they were
real movie-makers, and the world was about to take notice.
Once again, Sigourney Weaver shows that she can portray any role
given and, with grace and strength, make it her own. |

"A
man tells so many stories, that he becomes the stories.
They live on after him, and in that way he becomes immortal."
Will Bloom
Why watch this? It
is a visually stunning, creative tale about a wounded son and
his eccentric father.
Plot Summary: Will
returns home to visit his dying father, Edward Bloom, a man
known for his incredible, larger-than-life stories. Frustrated
by his father's constant tall tales, Will attempts to uncover
the truth behind them, seeking to reconcile the imaginative
narratives with the real life his father lived. Through
flashbacks and Will's investigation, much is gleaned about the
relationship between fact and fiction, the nature of legacy, and
a son's journey to understanding his father.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Father-Son relationships can be strained. This fantastical,
allegorical film deals with this topic. A young man feels he
doesn't really know his father. His Dad was an eccentric man who
always told wild, farcical stories about his lifey. The
Son, now about to be a father himself, is exhausted for the truth.
There is a lovely, whimsical quality at play in this true work
of cinematic art, and it is
thoroughly enjoyable... and Ewan McGregor wins you over.
