Elsie was my dear Mom.
She lived most of her life in Callahan Co, TX. She graduated from
Oplin High School, then attended college two years at Abilene
Christian College. There she met E. Earl Durham and they were
married. They built a house in Callahan Co, TX (on an existing
foundation) near her
parent's ranch. After her and Earl divorced, Elsie moved to El
Paso, TX to live with her daughter, Reba Arroyo. In 1976, she
and her youngest son returned to
Callahan county, moving back into the same old house (after running
off the coons and rattlesnakes) and there they lived many
more years. Later in life she moved to Camp Hill, PA to be near her sons.

C. T. Straley, and his father,
Charley D. Straley, owned and operated "Straley and
Straley" ranch for many years. When Charley passed away, John became
the second Straley in the name. They raised beef cattle,
wheat, sorghum for hay, and oats for feed. They also worked
with premium
show cattle. Summers were spent "working" cattle, combining
grain, building and mending barbwire fences, and endlessly ploughing
the hard Texas dirt. Winters required feeding, breaking ice so
livestock could drink, deer hunting and working with show calves and
hogs. As you can imagine, work on the ranch was never in short
supply.
-
The list of livestock
show wins for their children through the years in Callahan County
was
impressive. Early on, their children exhibited mostly sheep
and hogs. In high school, their specialty became the beef cattle
breeds. They regularly brought their prize livestock to
exhibitions Baird, Abilene, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San
Antonio.
-
C. T. and Peg were the most loyal partners in life, truly loving
one another every day. Their warm home was always open to anyone stopping by.
There are countless memories of hot summer days and hard manual
labor. And who can forget lunchtime - after washing up, C.
T.'s son and nephew would partake in a
delicious country lunch around their dining bar where all would
laugh and talk up various topics. Aunt Peg sure knew how to russle
up the grub. She could feed
two
or 200. Nobody ever walked away from their house feeling hungry.
-
Charley Tom passed away
in 2002, at age 78. Peggy passed away on what would have been her
51st wedding anniversary in July of 2003. She missed her true love
terribly after his passing and if ever someone died of a broken
heart, it was her. Now "Son and Peg" are back together again.
-
Peggy's father, John Harold SANSOM
"Johnnie"
(b. Feb 21, 1911, McCuCtyTX; d. Sep 29, 1962, Abilene, TX, called "Johnny".
Click here to see his obituary.)
married Jewel BUSH on Feb 21, 1929 in Brady,
McCuCtyTX. They lived around Brady (Mercury
community) in McCuCtyTX. Peggy had one sister, Sabra Sansom (called "Sabe"),
who never married and worked the ranch with her mother after John's
death in 1962. Sabe and Jewel where two kind, tough,
hard-working Texas gals who always would chat your ear off.

Nanny was a feisty
Texas lady! She would say the damndest things. She once got really mad because she felt nobody was
listening to her. So, to get everybody's attention, she took a
loaded six-shooter (kept on the fireplace mantle just in case) and shot a
hole in the bedroom ceiling. She was in her 70's at that time.
-
Family lore tells that she once she saved Charley's life from a
flash flood in the creek bed on the Pecan Bayou,
CallCtyTX.
Another story as told by Elsie Straley Durham occurred when Nanny's
children were all under age 10. Nanny and the small children were at
home, a ranch 25 miles from the nearest town. This made Nanny very
nervous. Elsie said anytime they heard someone approaching they
house, they would go down into the cellar and hide until the
unwanted guests had moved on. I guess they are luck nobody decided
to rob the place!
