Death of a Pioneer |
Capt. John W. Jones, died at his home on Clear Creek (in Callahan
County, Texas) Tuesday at 2 p.m. He was born in (Columbus) Mississippi, Nov.
16th, 1840, served four years in the Confederate army, came to Texas from
Louisiana after the Civil War, came to Brown county in 1869 or '70 and he and
Miss Eliza Windham, eldest living daughter of the late Dr. J. D. Windham, were
married March 10th 1870. He commanded a company of
rangers in Brown county in the early 70's. Moved to Callahan County about 1876
and served as sheriff of this county for more than 20 years. After he retired
from the sheriff's office he moved to his ranch on Clear Creek, where he has
since resided. He is survived by his wife, no children, and some nephews and
nieces. He was kind-hearted and generous to a fault and perhaps paid more
security debts, trying to help his friends, than any man who ever lived in this
county. |
