Why watch this?
Regardless of a far-fetched plot, it still succeeds thanks to
Lancaster and Hepburn.
Plot Summary: On the
Texas frontier, the close-knit Zachary family faces intense
scrutiny and hostility when a mysterious stranger spreads rumors
that their adopted daughter, Rachel, is actually of Kiowa Native
American descent. As the accusation threatens to destroy their
reputation and relationships with neighbors, the family must
fight against both a vengeful local tribe and the racial
prejudice of their community.

Dad's Preview:
To believe this film, you have to buy-in 100% that the
fair, very Anglo Audrey Hepburn could be a Native
American. Once you accomplish that feat, then this
becomes a pretty good Western drama film. That is until
the part where she embraces a relationship with a much
older man whom she once called her brother. Admittedly,
it is a lot to process and that is part of the charm
here - it is a complicated plot about settlers and their
relationship with the Native peoples whose land they now
occupy. The ever stern Lancaster and adorable Hepburn
are equally compelling. And I really enjoyed a young
Doug McClure, who supplied some comic relief in this
serious, racially-charged Western film. |
