"There is no human, nor
angel, nor demon, who wouldn't grasp at the chance to fulfil
their deepest longings. And I am saddled with the one who claims
to want nothing at all? Alithea Binnie, you are a liar!" -

Why watch this?
A wish-granting genie in modern society. This deeply interests
me.
Plot Summary:
A lonely British scholar named Alithea Binnie travels to
Istanbul for a work conference, and she buys a strange glass
bottle at a local market. When she accidentally opens the
souvenir in her hotel room, she releases a powerful Djinn
(aka genie) who offers to grant her three wishes in exchange for
his freedom. To convince the skeptical academic, the magical
being shares fantastical stories from his three-thousand-year
history across different ancient eras.

Dad's Preview:
George Miller (of Mad Max fame) created this
splendid adult fantasy version of the Aladdin story of
yore. A mortal, Alithea, finds a bottle that contains a
Djinn who grants her three wishes. However,
Alithea, a literary scholar, is smart, crafty, and in
many ways, she feels outside of this world. She
also understands that those who receive three wishes
rarely find true happiness - such is the nature of
cautionary tales. This film, wherein the Djinn recounts
the incredible adventures of his life, is a lovely blend
of CGI effects, and the interaction between two
incredible actors, in Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba. Both
are fine examples of a new wave of acting talent. This
tale will have you wondering about your own wish
choices. It also mightily suggests that we should heed
the old fables that were written to teach us valuable
lessons. |
