"Chance Phelps was
wearing his St. Christopher medal when he was killed on Good
Friday. Eight days later, I handed the medallion to his mother.
I watched them carry him the final fifteen yards. I felt that as
long as he was still moving, he was somehow still alive." -
Lt. Col. Mike Strobl
Why watch this?
Out of respect for those who serve.
Plot Summary:
Based on a true story, Marine Lieutenant Colonel Michael Strobl
volunteers to escort the remains of 19-year-old Private First
Class Chance Phelps, who was killed in action in Iraq, back to
his hometown in Wyoming. As Strobl journeys across the United
States, he witnesses the immense respect and collective grief
shown by military personnel, airport workers, and civilians, all
of whom offer tributes to the fallen Marine.

Dad's Preview:
Thanks to media coverage, and our nation's ability to
remain isolated and free from war on our continent, most
Americans under 60 don't understand war or our military.
It's something "on TV" or "over there", and thus doesn't
impact the collective us. How dare anyone disrupt
our comfort? However, war is real and horrible. Our
soldiers do die and families are devastated. This simple
film, about a lone Marine, should be required viewing in
high schools. Regardless of the politics that cause
their deaths, we as Americans, should ALWAYS honor those
killed while in uniform. This true story is a respectful
tribute to our fallen. Kevin Bacon is subtly incredible
as a man who volunteers for the duty to accompany a
young soldier to his final resting place. If you have a
pulse, this will move you to tears. |
