"When I was young, I
looked at old people and thought, if you live long enough you've
probably had time to figure out dying. But I'm no closer now to
the great mystery than when I was 10." - Irene Morrison
Why watch this?
It's a lovely, bittersweet drama about growing older together.
Plot Summary:
Based on a true story, an elderly New Brunswick farmer named
Craig Morrison who decides to build a more accessible,
single-story home on his property for his beloved wife, Irene,
as she begins to suffer from dementia. Using traditional
carpentry methods passed down by his father, Craig quickly finds
his independent project halted by a strict local building
inspector who cites numerous code violations. Driven by deep
devotion to his wife, the stubborn octogenarian risks fines and
potential jail time as he races against her declining health to
finish the structure..

Dad's Preview:
Many films hit differently when you cross over the big
6-0. Your body aches more. You feel tasks getting more
difficult. Yeah, who cares. This wonderful, tender and
feisty film centers on an independent couple, slowly
forced to deal with the wife's oncoming dementia. He
wants to build a smaller house, and in today's
regulatory world, that's creates several problems. James
Cromwell, one of my favorite character actors, and
Geneviève Bujold deliver strong, heartrending
performances. He is the kind of man I admire. She gently
reminds me of my Mom. It's a lovely, softly tragic story
- one that plays out often, if you are your spouse are
lucky enough to become old folks. |
