"I mean, you've just
been evicted out of your apartment, your grants have run out:
everything you own are in those two bags. You wanna prove that
your theories are right? This is your chance."
Catherine Langford to Dr. Daniel Jackson
Why watch this? A
portal is discovered that utilizes a space wormhole. Awesome!
Plot Summary:
An jaded Egyptologist and troubled military colonel team up to
activate an ancient, alien ring device that creates a wormhole
to a distant desert planet. Upon arrival, they discover an
oppressed human civilization ruled by a tyrannical
extraterrestrial posing as a powerful sun god. The duo must then
ignite a rebellion among the locals and uncover the cosmic truth
behind Earth's ancient myths in order to find a way back home.

Dad's Preview:
When you put the word "Star" in a movie's title, you are
inviting high expectations. Stargate excels with
stunning visual effects and I really liked James
Spader's performance, as a brilliant archaeologist. The
story's potential is huge, but the film simply missed
its opportunity, falling instead into familiar,
over-used space opera clichés. I did not like Kurt
Russell's character, which was a waste of his talents.
This is a fun trip across the universe, and the "gate"
technology is cool... it is certainly a film that is
more fiction than science. Incidentally, a television
spin-off did occur in 1996 called
Stargate SG-1, which ran for ten seasons. |
