Dad's Preview:
As film noir dependable standard, this film's cast of players are all
of questionable chracter: the mobster, the over-bearing rich
heiress, the
cheating husband who owes the mob money. At its center is the great
Barbara Stanwyck. As an invalid, she becomes terrified over
several phone calls, especially those regarding her husband who, once
again, has not come home as planned. Burt Lancaster is equally compelling as
her unhappy husband, a man so desperate that he will do anything
to hide his crimes. As they dig their private holes, we
understand that things are not going to end well. It's dark,
many of the scenes in smoky corners with creepy shadows. It's
classic Film Noir 101. |
