Why watch this?
Aging parents can be hard to deal with. Then there's Woody
Grant...
Plot Summary:
An aging, somewhat delusional father, Woody Grant, believes he
has won a million-dollar sweepstakes prize. He insists on
traveling from his home in Montana to Lincoln, Nebraska, to
collect his winnings. His estranged son, David, reluctantly
agrees to drive him, turning it into a father-son bonding road
trip. Along the way, they stop in Woody's hometown, leading to
encounters with relatives and old acquaintances who learn of the
supposed fortune.
Dad's Preview:
It is honestly a joy when great character actors, in their
autumn years, finally snag a role that, in many ways, define
them. Richard Farnsworth's film was
The
Straight Story (1999). Geraldine Page's movie was
Trip to
Bountiful (1985). Here Bruce Dern, a
prolific journeyman actor (and Laura Dern's father), finally accomplishes his magnum opus.
The film is about a man, on the edge of senility, just wants to
collect this sweepstakes. What emerges is a wonderful story of a
father and son spending a little time together on an adventure.
