"You don't love me.
I'm just something you've caught! You think I'm some sort of
animal you've trapped!" - Marnie Edgar
Why watch this?
This is an engaging film about manipulation and sexual trauma.
Plot Summary:
Marnie Edgar is a kleptomaniac obsessed with stealing large cash
sums from her employer's safes. She vanishes with the cash, lies
low, then repeats the deed at a new location in a new city. We
learn that her relationship with her mother is cold and distant,
she also has an extreme aversion to thunder and the color red,
causing her to become hysterical. She happens upon a wealthy
widower, Mark, who catches onto what she's up to. Instead of
turning her over to the police, he's intrigued by her and takes
drastic, even disturbing, steps to help the troubled woman.
Dad's Preview:
By 1964 Hitchcock
knew exactly the film he wanted to make based on the Graham
Winston novel of the same name - a sexually-charged thriller. Connery is
excellent as the tall, handsome, dark love interest, but it's Tippi Hedren's movie. She is captivating as a woman who knows
what she is, yet cannot stop it. In fact she has shut herself
off from all affection, despising men's touch. There are a
couple of disturbing scenes, but this film is well-made, and
I consider it Hitchcock's most underrated works.
