Plot Summary:
At the close of the Antarctic summer, emperor penguins embark on
a long journey from the coast to their traditional breeding
grounds inland. Facing harsh conditions like extreme cold and
predators, they engage in a unique courtship and mating ritual
to find a partner. Following the mating, the female lays a
single egg, which is carefully transferred to the male for
incubation while she undertakes a perilous trek back to the sea
to find food.
Dad's Preview:
This documentary, about the annual journey of Emperor penguins
in Antarctica, is one of the most touching stories ever
committed to cinema. These waddling avians travel vast ice-covered
distances to mate, and lay a single egg. Then they must endure
the bitter cold environment, protect the egg, and hopefully raise
the chick to adulthood. It was wise to select the comforting
voice of Morgan Freeman to narrate the American version. The
film won
the Oscar for Best Documentary.
