"You can make the
world swear King Kong is ten stories tall and Mary Pickford a
virgin at 40. Yet you can't convince starving voters that a
turncoat socialist is a menace to everything Californians hold
dear? You're barely trying." -

Why watch this?
Once again, Gary Oldman inhabits a role like no other.
Plot Summary:
The story follows the cynical but brilliant screenwriter Herman
J. Mankiewicz as he races against time to finish the screenplay
for
Citizen Kane (1941). Driven by personal grievances and
his turbulent relationships within Hollywood, he draws
inspiration from his real-life interactions with media mogul
William Randolph Hearst. The film reflects deeply on the
politics, excess, and compromised ideals of 1930s Hollywood as
one man struggles to create his masterpiece.

Dad's Preview:
This film is an exploration of Old Hollywood in the
1930's. All the greats are there: Lewis B. Mayer, Irving
Thalberg, Orson Wells, William Randolph Hearts, to name
a few. Things were politically charged, too, with
Germany rising to power, and Hollywood's alliances
divided. Gary Oldman dominates as Herman "Mank"
Mankiewicz, a jaded screenwriter working on a screenplay
at the insistence of the demanding Mr. Wells. He dances
around the greats with an earnest, yet critical,
personality they like to entertain. That is, until the
drink makes him too honest. The old movie companies did
make great films, yet they also destroyed people's lives
in the process. Regardless, as they say, the show went
on, and Mank did write one of the greatest
American tales of all time. |
