DML Rating: ★★★★★★★★☆☆ - great

"'Cause I'm a loner clear down deep to my guts. Know what a loner is? He's a born cripple. He's a cripple because the only person he can live with is himself. It's his life, the way he wants to live. It's all for him. A guy like that, he'd kill a woman like you. Because he couldn't love you, not the way you are loved." - Jack Burns

Why watch this? The Neo-Western drama documents many men of that time - lonely and often jaded.

Plot Summary: A fiercely independent, old-fashioned cowboy deliberately gets himself imprisoned to break his conventional best friend out of a New Mexico jail, only to find his friend no longer shares his desire for a life on the run. Disappointed, the cowboy breaks out alone and becomes a fugitive, attempting to ride his beloved horse across the mountains to freedom in Mexico. A relentless manhunt ensues, led by a surprisingly sympathetic sheriff.

Dad's Preview: How many Western films centered on the wandering loner? - a principled man who rode into town, battled the bad guys, got the girl, then rode away, alone, into the sunset. This drama deconstructs this Western myth, yet also highlights the men who tried to live that kind of life. These damaged fellows filled many bars and jails along the way, even to modern times. If you're looking for an actor to portray a smoldering, complicated role, then Kirk Douglas is your best choice, and here he shines. There's lots of drama, intertwined with brawling action, plus some beautiful desert landscapes, as jail escapee Douglas attempts to reach Mexico on horseback.
