Plot Summary:
In a dystopian future Japan, a corrupt mayor uses a sudden
outbreak of canine flu to banish the entire city's dog
population to a remote, garbage-filled wasteland called Trash
Island. The story follows a determined twelve-year-old boy named
Atari who hijacks a miniature airplane and flies to the island
to locate his beloved bodyguard dog, Spots. Upon crash-landing,
he teams up with a colorful pack of exiled alpha dogs who assist
him on an epic journey to find his pet, while a larger political
conspiracy unfolds back on the mainland.

Dad's Preview:
I found my way to Wes Anderson with the film
Moonrise Kingdom (2012). There is a playful
innocence deep with this director, and I can't wait to
explore his whole filmography. This dystopian sci-fi
comedy is about a world where dogs (unfairly) have been
cast out of society, banished to a trash island. One boy
embarks on an adventure to find his missing dog, Spots.
The stop-motion animation is incredibly done and
endlessly creative. The film's laughs lie within the
subtle winks and head-turns to the camera by our
intrepid canines, who decide to help the lad. Setting
the tale in future Japan was an excellent choice, where
we learn a lot about that country's history, mannerisms
and traditions. This is a true gem and, aside from a
couple of adult language outbursts, ideal for the entire
family. |
