Why watch this? ...
a great story about an amazing horse, set in the Arabian
desert.
Plot Summary:
Frank Hopkins, an American cowboy facing personal struggles,
embarks on a journey to Arabia with his mustang, Hidalgo, to
compete in the dangerous "Ocean of Fire," a 3,000-mile survival
race across the Arabian Desert. Competing against the world's
finest Arabian horses and Bedouin riders, Hopkins and Hidalgo
must overcome not only the brutal desert conditions but also the
animosity of rivals determined to prevent a foreigner and a
non-thoroughbred horse from finishing the race.
Dad's Preview:
My awesome brother kept hawking this film, and I finally
listened. Of course, he was right on the money. It covers a cross-country race, on horseback, over the brutal Ad-Dahana
desert in the late 1800's. It's loosely based on a true story
about the toughness of a paint pony. The cinematography is epic
as the race courses through the vast, dusty desert. Mortensen is engaging as
the soft-spoken, Western-loner protagonist.
