Dad's Preview:
This dystopian science-fiction thriller centers on a
future where eugenics determines the fate of children
based on genetic selection. The minute you are born,
testing basically predicts your probability of diseases
and even how long you will live. Those with higher
scores are considered "valids", and they get the
professional jobs. The rest are relegated to menial
tasks. The film sports a very intelligent,
thought-provoking script with a suspenseful sub-plot.
Its lead stars, Hawke, Thurman and Law, deliver
excellent performances. It builds a futuristic vision
that is not inconceivable. Genetic testing is real
science, so much so, that the U.S. government passed the
Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act in 2008. Once
again, science fiction becomes science. Yikes! |
