"The only people who can afford to be artists in New York are rich." - Sophie

Why watch this? It's sort of Woody Allen does Napoleon Dynamite for young New Yorkers in the 2010's.

Plot Summary: Frances, a 27-year-old struggling apprentice dancer in New York City, navigates a chaotic life of financial instability and professional uncertainty after her roommate best friend moves out. While grappling with the loss of her closest bond and failing to secure stable work, she moves between apartments, including a short stint in Paris. Despite these setbacks, she continues to pursue her artistic goals with chaotic energy.

Dad's Preview:  This film initially grabbed me enough to watch it a second time. I've had friends that lived in NYC, and this film captures the vibe of living in that bustling metropolis. Yet, into this maelstrom comes Frances, a native of California. She, and her tall frame, wants to dance, yet it's extremely competitive. She loses her best friend and their goofy relationship. But she soldiers on. Gerwig, who co-wrote the script, delivers an off-kilter performance that is completely likeable, and I really fell in love with her exhausting energy. It was wise, and I cannot precisely say why, to release the film in black and white. It does gives it a more intimate feel in my opinion.
