"Some gang! An Indian
ranch hand, a drunken gunfighter, a sex maniac... and an uncle!" -
Cat Ballou
Why watch this?
There aren't many musical Westerns. This one is a comedic blast!
Plot Summary:
When greedy railroad owners threaten to take her family's
ranch, Catherine "Cat" Ballou decides to fight back. She enlists
a part-Native American ranch hand, a couple of inept bank
robbers and the famous hired-gun, Kid Sheleen. When Kid arrives,
it's quickly learned that he is no longer the gunman of lore, but
rather a bumbling drunkard (along with his inebriated horse). When the Kid
learns that the railroad has hired the notorious Tim Strong, he sobers
up -
intent on killin' the bad guy and hopefully winning beautiful
Cat's heart.
Dad's Preview:
This raucous shoot 'em-up comedy is
narrated by musical talents Stubby Kaye and Nat King Cole. It's
a very lively and funny film. Fonda is a delight as the title
character, however Lee Marvin steals the show. He won the Oscar
for Best Actor, playing the dual roles of Kid Sheleen and his
nemesis, Tim Strong. There are laughs, a little gun-play, some
romance and even a few memorable musical numbers to boot.
