"We're not supposed to
be friends, you and me. We're meant to be enemies. Did you know
that?" - Bruno, to Shmuel
Why watch this? This
poignant story illustrates the Holocaust through a child's eyes.
Plot Summary: During
World War II, a young German boy named Bruno moves with his
family to a secluded, ominous house located next to a
concentration camp where his father is the commandant. Lonely
and sheltered from the truth, Bruno breaks rules to explore the
perimeter, befriending a Jewish boy his own age separated from
him by a barbed-wire fence. Their forbidden, innocent friendship
grows, setting the stage for a tragic encounter when Bruno tries
to help his new friend on the other side.

Dad's Preview:
At then end of this film I slumped down deep into my
couch and cried like a baby. Humankind is the monster of
this universe. Though we create great things and
beauties, we also commit the most devious and cruel
deeds upon our fellow man. Based on the 2006 novel of
the same name by John Boyne, this beautifully shot film
is a gut punch. We know where it is going, but we
specifically hope that these two young protagonists find
a way to both survive, grow up and affect change on the
world. There are some stellar performances, namely Vera
Famiga and the two children, Asa Butterfield and Jack
Scanion. But all is over-shadowed by the film's deeply
dark story. This should be required viewing to show the
real human cost of such a horrible time in
history. |
