"God put you in my path and
I aim to cure you of your wicked ways." - Lazarus
Why watch this? Txx.
Plot Summary: This
story follows a deeply religious, broken-hearted blues musician,
Lazarus, who discovers a young, severely beaten woman, Rae, left
for dead on the side of the road. Seeking to cure her of her
destructive, nymphomaniac behavior and save her soul, he chains
her to his radiator to keep her from running away. As they spend
time together in isolation, an unusual bond forms between them,
helping both troubled souls confront and heal from their past
traumas.

Dad's Preview:
Akin to
Monster's Ball (2001), this film's hype was
centered on its female star's sexually-charged
performance. Like Halle Berry in the former, Christina
Ricci does bare it all during her performance here, but
there is a deeper, sturdier plot at play. It's about two
damaged individuals searching for meaning in their
lives. For her, it's to overcome a life of being used by
those who claim to love her. For him, it's regaining his
faith and rediscovering his love of guitar blues. There
are some hard scenes to watch, namely her senseless
partying, and his initial enslavement of Rae. But I
found it a soulful, Southern gothic retelling of
Shakespeare's
The Taming of the Shrew. Honestly, aren't we all
searching for life's meaning? |
