"Why would I go to
your paradise? Are my people there? My woman? My boy?
There's
only blackrobes." - Chomina
Why watch this? This
is one of the most realistic films about America's Native
Peoples.
Plot Summary: In
17th century New France (the French colonies in North America),
a Jesuit priest, known as "Black Robe," embarks on a long and
perilous journey to a distant Huron mission. Guided by Algonquin
natives, he faces challenges from the wilderness, mistrust from
indigenous tribes, and attacks by warring Iroquois. His mission
to convert the Huron tribe becomes a test of faith and endurance
as he confronts the cultural clash between Europeans and Native
Americans.
Dad's Preview:
This beautifully shot film centers on missionary, Father LaForgue
who begins the
long, perilous journey upriver to Huron settlements. I
appreciate that the film does not preach one way or
the other; there are good and bad on all sides. The hard, cold North American wilderness is
captivating in its rugged
scenery. It is hard to understand how anyone survived in those days.
