"It is literally
impossible to be a woman... You have to never get old, never be
rude, never show off, never be selfish, never fall down, never
fail, never show fear, never get out of line. It's too hard!
It's too contradictory and nobody gives you a medal or says
thank you!" -
Gloria
Why watch this?
It is so much more than a cute little film about dolls for
girls.
Plot Summary: After
experiencing an existential crisis, a "stereotypical" Barbie
leaves the seemingly perfect Barbieland to travel to the
human world in order to find her true purpose. She is
accompanied by Ken, who discovers a newfound, distorted
appreciation for patriarchy and brings these ideas back to their
home, causing a chaotic shift in power dynamics. Barbie must
then work to restore balance to her world while coming to terms
with the complexities of humanity.

Dad's Preview: After
the creation of this film I am wagering that there was a pink
paint shortage. My wife was constantly screaming things like, "I
had Quick Curl Barbie!" Using Mattel's iconic blonde gal,
magically portrayed by Margo Robbie, and her chic accessories,
many themes are hilariously explored: commercialism, toxic
masculinity, and the systematic oppression of women. It's not
even trying to hide it. It is hard to comprehend how a film
about plastic playthings can be so controversial, but it caused
a right-wing meltdown akin to Biden trying to pass gun
legislation. God, what causes such fear and insecurity in so
many men. My advice - Grow up. Stop being misogynistic jerks.
It's a bad look. Your mother was a woman, so show some damn
respect. After all, they are women, hear them roar. |
