"Damage? Total, sir.
It's what we call a global killer. The end of mankind. Doesn't
matter where it hits.
Nothing would survive, not even bacteria."
- Dan Truman, to
the President
Why watch this? This
testosterone-fest is fun and exciting. Willis is perfect as the
tough wildcatter who bucks up and saves the freakin' day.
Plot Summary: When a
giant asteroid is discovered on a collision course with Earth,
NASA enlists the help of a deep-core drilling team. These
blue-collar workers must undergo rigorous training to become
astronauts. The plan is to plant a nuclear bomb deep inside the
asteroid and destroy it. Their mission faces harrowing
challenges, including landing on the asteroid, deadly rock
storms, as a limited amount of time to save humanity.
Dad's Preview:
I have several friends who protest mightily that this action
flick is not more prominently valued on Dad's lists. Well, I
can only trust my heart. This flick is fine, heroic, good in
many ways, but lacks the uniqueness I require to elevate it. It
was a bit too predictable. The same year's
Deep Impact
was more believable. But, hey, don't let that stop you. Please see it,
it IS fun...
and bring lots of popcorn.
