"You are born of the

ambitions one thousand times greater than those at which you

Dr. Josef Mengele to young Bobby Wheelock
Why watch this? It's
an incredibly gripping tale about Nazi war criminals scheming in
South America.
Plot Summary: A
young Nazi hunter in Paraguay uncovers a disturbing meeting of
former SS officers, led by the notorious Dr. Josef Mengele. This
discovery alerts a skeptical but seasoned Nazi hunter, Ezra

terrifying goal. Ultimately, he unravels a horrific conspiracy

Dad's Preview:
This tight thriller is like a complex ball of twin; as more is
unraveled, more of the plot is revealed. It all leads to an
incredible, terrifying revelation. Two veteran actors, in Peck
and Olivier, give excellent performances. On a side note, it's
impossible for me two write a preview on a film centered on a
raging narcissist, enacting his evil plan, without seeing the
undeniable parallels to America's political situation. Critics
of the day couldn't understand that Dr. Mengele's plan wasn't
more fleshed out. Well, duh, these men wantonly execute their
concepts of plans and damn the consequences. The only thing the
rest of us can do is count the bodies. |

"Do I look like I give

James Bond, when asked if he wants his martini shaken or
stirred.
Why watch this?
Out with the old and in with a completely new Bond.
Plot Summary: As
newly-promoted Double-0 agent James Bond on his first mission,
007 must travel to a high-stakes poker game in Montenegro to
defeat Le Chiffre, a banker who finances global terrorism. Bond
is partnered with treasury agent Vesper Lynd, and together they
navigate the dangerous game of cards and the subsequent fallout.
The mission forces Bond to confront personal stakes he has never
encountered before, ultimately shaping the iconic agent we know.
| |
Dad's Preview:
A re-thinking of James Bond on film, with it's suave,
gadget-filled silliness, was long overdue. This film bulldozes
everything and wants you to know it. This is a gritty,
action-packed rendition of 007... Bond gets bloody. He's an
agile, capable assassin operating without mercy. He's also
flawed by the very characteristic that makes him good at his job
- his arrogance. There was initial trepidation about the
compact, fair Daniel Craig, however he nails Bond better than
the previous actors, with his powerful, cold, sardonic
brutality. This makes him refreshingly interesting. True to
form, there are femme fatales, quirky villains, and
double-crosses galore, yet it manages to feel new. It was
deservedly a huge success, and I must whole-heartedly agree. |

uncover the truth, she uncovers a web of secrets and shocking
revelations that challenge her understanding of the entire case.

Dad's Preview:
There are two things that propel this film above others
of its kind. First, the film's intelligent screenplay,
with its multiple twists, points viewers to a place we
want it to go, but it gets to a place we did not expect.
That's good writing. Second, its cast is exceptional.
Regardless of what you think about Kevin Spacey
personally, he so good at playing those roles where he
never quite shows his hand - is he a good or bad?
Winslet and Linney are likewise excellent and I have
admired both actresses for years. This film divided
critics. I think the naysayers put too much focus on
what this film was trying to politically say about the
death penalty. To me, that's just a part of the plot,
and it doesn't sway me one way or the other. |

The first film adaptation of author Robert Ludlum's Bourne trilogy, kicks things off with a
bang. It follows the story of Jason Bourne, a man who
has no memory of his past. The fun is how he unravels the
mystery. As people try to kill him, he demonstrates unique
survival skills. Who is this highly-trained individual? By sheer
luck, he find an ally in Marie Kreutz. The action sequences
successfully create a manic mood that keeps the tension tight.
It also leaves us wanting more after the end credits roll. |

– Mr. Powers
Why watch this?
This fast-moving, conspiracy-laden thriller will keep you on the
edge of your seat!
Plot Summary:
On the eve of World War II, an American crime reporter, John
Jones, is sent to Europe to interview a Dutch diplomat, Van Meer,
about the probability of war. At an event, he also falls for
Carol, the intelligent and witty daughter of Mr. Fisher,
spokesman for the Universal Peace Party. Jones gets a brief
conversation with the pleasant Van Meer, only to later witnesses
the man's assassination. Jones chases the culprit through
Holland, tracking him to a massive windmill in the Dutch
countryside.
| |
Dad's Preview:
In a plot that only Hitchcock could
dream up, we are shown a sinister conspiracy plot prior to the start
of World War II. The depth of story and many elaborate sets (the
windmill scene, a plane crash into the cold seas) give this film
a sense of realism. This is intricate espionage as people are
kidnapped, drugged, tortured and murdered. Part of its genius is
that we are never quite sure who the good guys are. The actors performances are top-notch,
notably the determined, regular-guy, Joel McCrea, and beautiful newcomer, Laraine Day. |

Willa
Why watch this? This
is tension-building 101, with a satisfying conclusion.
Plot Summary:
This intense American story follows a disillusioned former
radical named Bob lives off-the-grid while raising his daughter,
Willa. Their quiet, yet paranoid, life is upended when a
sinister military nemesis from the past, Colonel Lockjaw,
resurfaces to hunt them down. Bob is forced to reunite with his
old revolutionary comrades and fight to protect his daughter
from the consequences of his previous life.
| |
Dad's Preview:
I liken One Battle to watching a film about a mangy dog,
dirty and unhealthy, yet determined to find his kidnapped pup.
This is a story of fatherly love and devotion. It also takes
several jabs at life in today's America, including immigration,
the Call of Duty bro-thugs and devious secret societies, where
rich men control the levers by manufacturing hate between common
citizens over race and poverty. Director Anderson has coaxed a
wonderful, Dude-like performance out of DiCaprio. Leo
covers the spectrum: cool, frantic, comedic and irrational; his
portrayal of Bob will be talked about a lot. Sean Penn also
gives one of the best performances in his long career. And you
can't dismiss the onscreen presence of the fierce Teyana Taylor. |

"I'm going to smoke

Why watch this?
My one post-viewing thought was, "Any country on this planet
would be a fool to mess with our military".
Plot Summary: This
CIA and military film focuses on Maya, a CIA operative
responsible for finding, through any means, the whereabouts of
Al Qaeda's leader, Osama Bin Laden. She's a direct, determined
and no bullshit lady. Finally, in 2011, her team's efforts
identify a compound in Pakistan where it is very likely Bin
Laden lives. A U.S. Navy SEAL team, at night, is sent in to kill
or capture Bin Laden.

Dad's Preview:
There is a very strong cast, but nobody

"Blackie" Black
Why watch this? This
film fictitiously documents our worst fears from the Cold War
conflict.
Plot Summary:
This story centers on a military crisis where a technical
malfunction mistakenly sends American bombers to launch a
nuclear attack on Moscow. The President of the United States
desperately attempts to convince the Soviet leader that this is
an accident and works with him to try to stop the bombers before
they can drop their payloads. The film explores the escalating
tension and the difficult decisions made to prevent a full-scale
nuclear war triggered by this critical error.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This intense film may be the most horrifying war film every
made, and there's almost no violence on screen. As the plot
enfolds, the tension is thick enough to cut with a knife. The threat of nuclear war should
scare the hell out of everybody. The major superpowers have the
capability to destroy each other, and this film shows the
fragility upon which balances our country's, and our world's,
continued peace - or annihilation. |

Dad's Preview:
Ford plays the US President whose plane is hijacked by Russian
terrorists led by Gary Oldman. Harrison Ford
is exceptional as the POTUS (we all wish we had), and equally effective is Glenn
Close as his stubborn VP. However, it is Oldman who steals
the show as the brutal antagonist - man, he can go over the top

Dad's Preview:
This superb film, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, is a perfect
blend of action, drama, and romance. Regarding the three lead

Plot Summary:

Sergeant Raymond Shaw receives the Medal of Honor, thanks to
Captain Ben Marco's recommendation. Marco, and many of the men
involved, however, are having horrible nightmares. In Marco's

and he feels that Shaw may be compromised.

Dad's Preview:
This exercise in Cold

are several scenes that are shocking, even by today's standards.
There is nothing more terrifying to any American than the
thought of being mentally manipulated to betray their loved

Angela Lansbury, whose portrays of a powerful woman willing to
sacrifice everything for her wanton ambitions, steals every
scene and frankly deserved an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. |

The plot is uber-creative and Spielberg makes is exciting. Cruise's

Dad's Preview:
This is the ninth Marvel Studios film and you can really feel
the filmmaking team at Marvel hitting its stride with these story arcs and
characters. True to form, the film is non-stop, sporting incredible
action sequences, a few very good plot twists, and the emergence
of The Falcon.
It is one of the best super-hero films I can recommend.
It has everything. compelling characters, engrossing
conflicts, incredible stunts and a ton of heart. |

"Once more, we play our
dangerous game, a game of chess against
our old adversary — The
American Navy." - Capt. Ramius
Why watch this?
The best submarine film ever made, IMHO.
Plot Summary:
Marko Ramius, a Soviet submarine captain commanding the
innovative stealth submarine Red October, unexpectedly alters
course and heads toward the United States. Suspecting Ramius has
gone rogue, both Soviet and American navies launch their own
hunts for the submarine. However, CIA analyst Jack Ryan believes
Ramius might be trying to defect, a theory he must prove before
an international incident erupts.

Dad's Preview:
I do love a good submarine movie.
Run Silent, Run Deep
(1958).
Crimson Tide
(1995). This stands alone at the top. Based on Tom
Clancy's novel, this takes us deep into a Cold War sea battle where a
Russian sub has gone missing, and the US sends its own sub to
intercept her, that is, before she can moor near the US coast
and launch ICBM missiles.
Sir Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin are excellent in their leading roles as Jack
Ryan and Soviet Captain Ramius. |

"If there is a war on
drugs, then many of our family members are the enemy. And I
don't know how you
wage war on your own family." – Robert
Wakefield, U.S. Drug Tsar
Why watch this?
It drives home that drugs are here, and the war is in our
homes.
Plot Summary: This
is a multi-narrative exploration of the illegal drug trade, from
various perspectives including law enforcement, politicians,
traffickers, and users. One storyline follows a judge appointed
as the US drug czar, grappling with his new role while
discovering his daughter's drug addiction. A second thread
focuses on two DEA agents tracking drug distribution across the
US-Mexico border, leading to the arrest of a major trafficker.
The third narrative delves into the complex world of a jailed
drug lord's wife who tries to navigate and maintain the family
business.

Dad's Preview:
This powerful film is a harsh blast of truth into the average
suburban citizen's life, as it tells the story of drug use in
the United States, and I am not talking pot. It covers all the related topics and gets
down and dirty. There are unforgettable scenes that will make
you flinch. It portrays its characters
realistically - nobody is truly good or bad. Del Toro's performance
really stands out as the Mexican cop working against the drug
trade from the other side of the border. It is a parental must
see. |

"Every time you look at me,
I can see it running over its slogans: "Once a crook, always a
crook", "Once

hand. I won't blackmail you for it afterwards." – Alicia
Huberman
Why watch this?
The building suspense within this film is quietly palpable.
Plot Summary:
U.S. agent Devlin recruits Alicia Huberman, the daughter of a
convicted Nazi spy, to infiltrate a group of Nazis hiding in Rio
de Janeiro. Alicia agrees, but her mission becomes complicated
when she falls in love with Devlin while being tasked with
seducing a prominent Nazi named Alexander Sebastian, who was
previously infatuated with her. This arrangement forces her into
a difficult position, testing her loyalties and potentially
putting her life in danger.

Dad's Preview:
In my eyes, what elevates this Hitchcock thriller is its elegant
anxiety. Everybody is so damn polite, and they rarely say what they
really feel or intend. So much so, that when it finally occurs,
it is a long-awaited reward. The film reunites Claude Rains
and Ingrid Bergman from
Casablanca (1942), and throws in
the amazing
Cary Grant. The climax is a film school master-class on how to build
up tension to an ending worth remembering. |

"Down here, things are
different; here, they believe that some things are worth killing
for." - Anderson
Why watch this? ... Gene Hackman's visit to the private social club.
Plot Summary:
In 1964, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, two FBI
agents with starkly different methods are dispatched to a small
Mississippi town to investigate the disappearance of three civil
rights workers. They face a community steeped in racial
prejudice and a local law enforcement system that proves
resistant to their inquiries, seemingly complicit in the
unfolding events. As the agents delve deeper, they uncover a
deeply entrenched network of racism and violence, forcing them
to confront the town's secrets and the dangers inherent in
challenging the status quo in the segregated South.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This film is great for two reasons. First, it tells the true story of three
missing civil rights college students who went missing in
Mississippi - a story that needs to be told. Second, it unleashes
Gene Hackman on a bunch of Southern racists who think they are
above the law because the local sheriff is in on their
deplorable activity.
This film is an exposé on the Klan and the deep bigoted hate of the Old South.
The cast is superb. Look for a young Frances McDormand in a key
role. |

"It leads everywhere.
Get out your notebook. There's more." - Deep Throat
Why watch this?
This explains Watergate in a very interesting and suspenseful
manner.
Plot Summary:
Two reporters from the Washington Post, Bob Woodward and Carl
Bernstein, are assigned to what initially seems like a minor
break-in at the Democratic Party Headquarters in the Watergate
complex. As they investigate, they uncover a much larger
political conspiracy, tracing the trail of illegal activity
higher and higher within the Nixon administration, despite
obstacles and threats to their safety. Their persistent
investigative journalism ultimately aims to reveal the truth
about the Watergate scandal and its connections to those in
power.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is a very intelligent film about the Watergate scandal in 1972. As a teen, I did
not understand what
Watergate entailed
- this film helped a
lot. There are stellar performances from Hoffman, Redford and Robarbs, who
all work for the Washington Post. Together they expose a depth of political corruption
that includes officials, senators and the even the U.S. President. As with most scandals, it's
all about the cover-up. This certainly
applies today with horrific events related to Enron, the Penn
State Sandusky scandal, and child molestation occurring in
various religious and civic organizations.
