This is a thought-provoking film about a possible, horrible, dystopian
future.

investigates the seemingly routine murder of a powerful
executive at the Soylent Corporation, which provides the world's
dwindling food supply. As Thorn delves deeper into the

to obstruct his efforts. Driven by a desire for truth in a world
seemingly devoid of it, Thorn follows a trail that leads to a

Dad's Preview:
Chuck Heston, later in his career, took on intellectual science
fiction films, such as
Planet of

The Omega Man
(1971). This really boosted his career. This mind-bending
dystopian flick, about a future world starving its people, is sci-fi,

Why watch this?
An excellent political thriller about the President's Secret Service

Plot Summary:
Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan, haunted by his failure to
save President Kennedy, gets a chance at redemption when a
former CIA assassin begins threatening the current President.
The assassin, who uses the alias "Booth," engages Horrigan in a
dangerous psychological game, taunting him with clues about his
elaborate plot and exploiting Horrigan's past trauma. Despite
skepticism from his superiors, Horrigan must race against time
to prevent a presidential assassination.

Dad's Preview:
This superb film, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, is a perfect
blend of action, drama, and romance. Regarding the three lead
characters, we fully understand their motivations, and that's
essential. Malkovich and Eastwood are really fun to watch as
they play the old "cat and mouse" game. Eastwood amazes me
in that at his age he can still play a romantic lead role and
not miss a beat. I love the film's thrilling finale. |

"You mean to tell me that
the U.S. strategy in Afghanistan is to have the Afghans keep
walking into machine gun fire 'til the Russians run out of
bullets?" - Charlie Wilson
Why watch this? An
all-star cast delivers a sharp-edged, intelligent film about how
stuff gets done in Washington.
Plot Summary:
In the 80's, Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson has a full plate.
When not governing, he's making deals, usually involving sleazy
characters, beautiful women, alcohol, and wealthy donors. Once
such donor (and occasional love interest) is Houston socialite,
Joanne Herring. Using her sway on Wilson, she wants the US to
quietly intervene in the ongoing war between Russia and
Afghanistan. She arranges a trip to that part of the world,
where he meets with Pakistan's President, who rips the U.S. for
not supporting their fight against Russia. They also visit a
Pakistan-based Afghan refugee camp and it's not pretty. Charlie,
with help from CIA Operative Gust Avrakotos, decides to find
hidden Congressional money to aid the Afghan people.

Dad's Preview: This film, as
effectively as any, pulls back the curtain on our
nation's political machine - how it can be worthless,
and how, every once in a while, it can do a little good
in the world. Hanks breathes life into Wilson, a natural
leader, hard-drinking playboy, and very good
Representative, navigating the fast-paced shark tank
that is our government. That stated, the most memorable
character is Gust, masterfully portrayed by the late
Philip Seymour Hoffman. He's grumpy, manipulative, rude
- but you just can't take your eyes off him, and it's
wonderful. The final kudo must go to a script and carves
the screen like a rapier - it's quick, witty, and
punches when it needs to. This excellent film is as
educational as it is enjoyable. Will you like it? "We'll
see". |

Dr. Manhattan
Why watch this?
Snyder films are so stylistically unique, and this one is
remarkable.
Plot Summary: Set in
an alternate 1985 at the height of the Cold War, the film opens
with the murder of a former costumed hero known as The Comedian.
This event prompts the vigilante Rorschach, who is still
actively fighting crime, to investigate a potential conspiracy
targeting other former superheroes. As Rorschach reconnects with
his former masked allies, they uncover a much larger and darker
plot that could have catastrophic consequences.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Zack Snyder developed this film from the uber-successful comic graphic
novel by the brilliant
Alan Moore. Some fans were very critical of the film's
adaptation, however it does work. There are great effects, interesting
heroes and a
rock solid, complex plot. I particularly love J. E. Haley's portrayal
of the dark, disturbed Rorschach, an anti-hero, fighting to
maintain his sanity in a violent world.
This super-hero saga is not for kids. Rather, it's a very
gritty film, where the plot is allowed to take us
into new, mature and interesting directions. |

Why watch this?
This is excellent science fiction - it will engross you.
Plot Summary:
Lucy is an American student in Taipei who finds herself forced
into working as a drug mule for a dangerous drug lord, Mr. Jang.
A synthetic, highly experimental drug is surgically implanted
inside her abdomen for transport, but the package ruptures,
leaking the potent chemical into her bloodstream. This
accidental exposure begins to unlock extraordinary skills and
abilities in Lucy, far beyond the typical 10% of brain use, and
she embarks on a journey to understand and control her rapidly
increasing mental capacity before her time runs out.
| |
Dad's Preview:
When Lucy is injected with too much of a radical new psychedelic drug, she
acquires unexpected psycho-kinetic powers. As she changes, she becomes
both hyper-inquisitive, and physically super-heroish,
dispatching thugs like Black Widow. The ending is really
mind-blowing, as she takes a final step to merge with massive
super-computers and breach the space-time continuum! Johansson,
as we're starting to expect,
delivers another amazing performance. This is high-level science
fiction, in the form of an excellent film. |

Plot Summary:
Skilled thief, Dom Cobb, specializes in stealing information by

into a target's subconscious, rather than extracting one, a
process called "inception". If he succeeds, his criminal history
will be erased, allowing him to return home to his children, but
a dangerous enemy from his past threatens to derail the mission.

Dad's Preview:
Director Nolan is the mage of "smart action thrillers". He
twisted our perception in
Memento (2000) and
reinvented the Batman. Here we follow a group of uber-thieves
who can enter people's dreams. The value of this skill is
immeasurable. Most of the film takes place in the labyrinth of a

a little hard to follow the first time through, but the visuals
are mind-bending. |

Why watch this?
This is a well-done action thriller. Jones and Ford are
excellent!
Plot Summary:
Dr. Richard Kimble is a respected surgeon who finds his wife
murdered in their home and claims the killer was a one-armed
man. Despite his protests, he is convicted of the murder, but
escapes from custody after a bus crash. As U.S. Marshal Sam
Gerard leads a relentless manhunt, Kimble endeavors to prove his

Dad's Preview:
Adapted from the popular 1960's TV show,

"Being
right is not a bullet-proof vest, Freddy." - Figgs
Why watch this?
This is Stallone's best performance since the original Rocky.
Plot Summary: The
story centers around Freddy Heflin, the sheriff of Garrison, New
Jersey, a seemingly peaceful town primarily inhabited by New
York City police officers. As Freddy investigates a suspicious
incident involving these officers, he uncovers a widespread
conspiracy of corruption among his esteemed residents. This
forces Freddy to confront a dangerous dilemma, choosing between
his loyalty to the officers he admired and his oath to uphold
the law.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Once the
Rocky and
Rambo films had run their course, Stallone settled into a
series of predictable action films, where he'd always swoop in,
flex his biceps and save the day. This gritty police drama,
however, stands above those. It is complex and painful, full of
lies and betrayals. Stallone's performance shines, especially
when he's sharing the screen with actors like Robert DeNiro, Harvey
Keitel and Ray Liotta. You'll root for Stallone's brow-beaten
local policeman, as he takes on his department's corruption. |

This superb film is at its best when Ford and Oldman go at it.
Plot Summary:
A group of terrorists hijacks the presidential aircraft, Air
Force One, demanding the release of their imprisoned leader. The
President, initially believed to have escaped, secretly remains
on board, fighting to protect his family and the other hostages.
He races against time, battling the hijackers to regain control

Dad's Preview:
Ford plays the US President whose plane is hijacked by Russian
terrorists led by Gary Oldman. Harrison Ford
is exceptional as the POTUS (we all wish we had), and equally effective is Glenn
Close as his stubborn VP. However, it is Oldman who steals
the show as the brutal antagonist - man, he can go over the top

Why watch this? It's
truly terrifying to learn that the human race is being replaced.
Plot Summary:
In a small town, a doctor notices a peculiar phenomenon: his
patients believe their loved ones are impostors. What initially
seems like mass hysteria soon reveals itself to be a sinister
alien invasion where humans are replaced by emotionless
duplicates grown from pods. As the truth unfolds, the doctor
must desperately try to warn others before he too falls victim

| |
Dad's Preview:
This brilliant film concept is based on a book by Jack Finney

learns that something is wrong on a massive scale. Several of
his patients insist relatives have been replaced by imposters
(a real condition called
Capgras delusions). Then he's summoned to a friend's house
where a dead body has appeared in the home. The body has no

"just go away". When his good friend at the firm starts acting strange
(he grows a conscious)
and quite unexpectedly succumbs, Michael realizes that he's
probably next. This is the point that I really began to see
George Clooney's genius. He makes acting look so easy. I also
love the erratic performance by Tom Wilkinson. The last scene in this film is worth the price
of admission alone. |

Dad's Full (Spoiler) Review
and Deep Dive of The Matrix
"Human beings are a
disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we are
the cure." - Agent Smith to Morpheus, as he interrogates
him
Why watch this?
Conceptually, visually, creatively - this film set a new
action sci-fi standard.
Plot Summary:
A computer programmer named Thomas Anderson, known in the
hacking underworld as Neo, feels that something is fundamentally
wrong with his reality. He is contacted by the enigmatic
Morpheus and Trinity, who offer him the chance to discover a
shocking truth: that his world is actually a computer-generated
simulation. Upon swallowing a red pill, Neo awakens in the
desolate real world and begins a journey to free humanity from
the machines that have enslaved them.

Dad's Preview:
A few short minutes into The Matrix, I realized I was
seeing the future - it was like nothing I'd experienced before.
By the end, I was completely inside my own head. What just
happened?! I had to see it again. And again. It was
revolutionary cinema that warped all senses of reality. What a
mind trip! And the soundtrack is edgy, ass-kicking alternative music. This was a
wise career move for Reeves, but the best performances were by
newcomers Carrie-Anne
Moss as Trinity and Hugo Weaving as the digital assassin, Agent
Smith. |

"I've got a job, a
secretary, a mother, two ex-wives and several bartenders that
depend upon me,
and I don't intend to disappoint them all by
getting myself slightly killed." - Roger Thornhill
Why watch this?
Cary Grant is superb as a mistaken man forced to survive a
nasty situation.
Plot Summary:
Manhattan advertising executive Roger Thornhill is mistakenly
identified as a government agent named George Kaplan by foreign
spies. He is thrust into a dangerous world of intrigue, pursued
across the country by the spies and the police who believe him
to be a murderer. As he tries to unravel the mystery and clear
his name, he encounters a beautiful, enigmatic woman whose
allegiances are unclear.

Dad's Preview:
I keep coming back
to this Hitchcock classic. In the ultimate case of mistaken identity,
Roger Thornhill, an ordinary
advertising executive, finds himself pursued by murderous
henchmen, dodging a crop-dusting bi-plane attack, and scaling
the heights of Mt. Rushmore! It's tense and tightly
written, with superb dialogue. This film works because of
Cary Grant, who, at the time, was at the top of his game in Hollywood. |

"I
keep seeing these people, all recognizing each other. Something
is passing between them all,
some secret. It's a conspiracy, I
know it." – Elizabeth Driscoll
Why watch this?
The original 1956 film was creepy. This remake is downright terrifying.
Plot Summary:
A San Francisco health inspector, Matthew Bennell, and his
colleague Elizabeth Driscoll discover that residents are slowly
being replaced by alien duplicates. These duplicates appear
identical to the humans they replace but are devoid of emotion
and empathy. As the alien takeover spreads throughout the city,
Bennell and Driscoll, along with two friends, must attempt to
survive and warn others of the impending global invasion.
| |
Dad's Preview:
The premise alone is too unbearable to
imagine. The filmmakers succeed in creating the sense of dread
from the
original 1956 film, but it is much more unnerving,
which elevates this masterpiece. The ending will stay in your mind for
quite some time. Sutherland and Adams shine, but I really
thought Leonard Nimoy (in a rare non-Star Trek role) was
a key to this film's success. |

"It leads everywhere.
Get out your notebook. There's more." - Deep Throat
Why watch this?
This explains Watergate in a very interesting and suspenseful
manner.
Plot Summary:
Two reporters from the Washington Post, Bob Woodward and Carl
Bernstein, are assigned to what initially seems like a minor
break-in at the Democratic Party Headquarters in the Watergate
complex. As they investigate, they uncover a much larger
political conspiracy, tracing the trail of illegal activity
higher and higher within the Nixon administration, despite
obstacles and threats to their safety. Their persistent
investigative journalism ultimately aims to reveal the truth
about the Watergate scandal and its connections to those in
power.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is a very intelligent film about the Watergate scandal in 1972. As a teen, I did
not understand what
Watergate entailed
- this film helped a
lot. There are stellar performances from Hoffman, Redford and Robarbs, who
all work for the Washington Post. Together they expose a depth of political corruption
that includes officials, senators and the even the U.S. President. As with most scandals, it's
all about the cover-up. This certainly
applies today with horrific events related to Enron, the Penn
State Sandusky scandal, and child molestation occurring in
various religious and civic organizations.
