"My friend, you suffer from
the misplaced optimism of the doomed." -
Mason
Why watch this? ...
it's a creative, intense spin on a dystopian Earth in a frozen future.
Plot Summary:
In a frozen post-apocalyptic world, the last remnants of
humanity live aboard the Snowpiercer, a massive train
perpetually circling the globe. Within the train, a rigid class
system has emerged, with the impoverished lower classes
relegated to the tail sections and the wealthy elite residing in
the front. A group of tail section inhabitants, led by a
determined revolutionary, decides to fight their way through the
train's cars and overthrow the oppressive ruling class.

Dad's Preview:
This film
is a fresh take on its genre. Thanks to some superb
character development, we feel a definite sense of connection to
the weary train "back-enders", and their plan to revolt and storm the train's engine.
Unlike the students at Kent State who stormed the
administration's offices years ago, let's hope our
film's usurpers find the answers they are seeking. Alive or
dead, at least,
they will be free. Chris Evans and Tilda Swinton stand out in
the post-apocalyptic thriller. |

"I really didn't

Joel
Why watch this?
It's a post-apocalyptic movie... with a great love story.
Plot Summary:
Seven years after giant monsters take over the world, a timid
young man named Joel lives in an underground bunker with other
survivors. When he reconnects via radio with his high school
girlfriend and discovers she is 85 miles away, he decides to
embark on a perilous journey to be with her. Along the way, he
must face his fears and learn how to survive on the
monster-infested surface, with the help of a loyal dog and a
pair of seasoned scavengers.

Dad's Preview:
In a sea of recent CGI-effects laden films, I find it rare that
one packs some real emotional punch. Here the effects never
dominate the film. Its center is the story and down-to-earth
characters - you might even say, "A boy and his dog." This
action movie is refreshing, full of heart and creative. Our
likeable yet flawed hero's journey, undertaken for love, is
wrought with serious danger. Joel's success hinges on his
ability to accept help and grow as a person. You can't ask for
more than that. Even with some of the slimiest, creepiest
creatures on film, it's still a family-friendly affair, with an
emotional ending you might not see coming. I am surprised that
no sequel is planned. |

Why watch this?
To witness real courage in the face of an uncertain future.
Plot Summary:
In a desolate, ash-covered post-apocalyptic world, a father and
his young son embark on a grueling journey southward in search
of a warmer climate and a more hospitable environment. Along
their perilous path, they must scavenge for food, avoid
dangerous encounters with other desperate survivors, including
cannibalistic gangs, and grapple with the constant threat of
starvation and despair. Despite the pervasive bleakness, the
father strives to instill in his son a sense of hope and the
importance of clinging to their humanity.

Dad's Preview:
This post-apocalypse slow burn, based on the
Cormac McCarthy
novel, is bleak upon bleak. Yet, there's a small glimmering
light within this pale landscape, and that is the love between
Man and Boy. They plod on to reach the coast, and
perhaps to find the "good guys". This jumps from
heart-felt, to terrifying, to hopeful, to hopeless and finally
to absolution. I really think the book's author, McCarthy, may
be the greatest writer of his generation. |

This remake is action-packed, terrifying... and visually

Plot Summary: Ray
Ferrier, a divorced dockworker and estranged father, struggles
to connect with his two children during a weekend visit when
strange lightning storms strike their New Jersey town. These
storms mark the beginning of a devastating alien invasion, as
colossal tripod war machines emerge from the ground,
incinerating everything in their path. Ray must now protect his
children and navigate a world descending into chaos.

Dad's Preview:
The War of the Worlds first saw the light of day in
H. G. Wells'
novel in 1898. In 1938, filmmaker Orsen Wells would read the
story live on radio, and cause a nationwide panic.
The original classic film had its impact. However, this version, by
master filmmaker Steven Spielberg, is
very realistic and truly disturbing, as a real alien invasion
would be! The invading aliens are brutal harvesters,
reaping
earth's vast resources and filling their massive hoppers with a plentiful supply of human meat. |

Logan, when looking at an old man's face for the first time.
Why watch this? ...
to be reminded that there are some great sci-fi films from the 70's.
Plot Summary:
In the 23rd century, humanity lives in a sealed city where every
citizen's life is artificially limited to the age of thirty. A
special assassin squad, called Sandmen, enforces this rule by
eliminating those who attempt to escape the designated
termination ritual known as "Carrousel". A Sandman named Logan 5
is tasked with infiltrating a rumored sanctuary outside the city
walls, but he soon finds himself on the run with a woman named
Jessica 6, questioning the very foundation of their seemingly
idyllic society.

Dad's Preview:
This film is set in a utopian future where the population is "renewed"
when they reach age 30. I read
this short paperback in the 7th grade, and thought, "Wow.
Science Fiction is cool." It will
get you thinking about humanity, and how sheepish humans can
become if they blindly follow the ruling authorities. Young
actors Jenny Agutter and Michael York are superb, and I enjoyed
acting legend Peter Ustinov brief appearance as the Old Man. |

Plot Summary:
In a dystopian future where Earth faces extinction due to
environmental disaster and widespread crop blights, former pilot
Cooper must leave his family behind to embark on a perilous
space mission. Along with a team of researchers, he travels
through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a new home for
humanity. The crew faces difficult choices and the extreme
effects of time dilation as they explore potentially habitable
planets in a distant galaxy.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This story follows NASA pilot Cooper who must travel
through space (and time) to find a new world for Earth's
population. This worm-hole spanning epic is packed with action
and danger, but it is also grounded, thanks to some personal moments.
The lead actors are real professionals, namely McConaughey, Hathaway and Chastain. The end will warm your heart and perhaps give you a little
more hope about the future of the human race. |

Plot Summary:
In a crime-ridden future of 1997, Manhattan Island is walled off
and transformed into a maximum-security prison for the United
States' worst criminals. When Air Force One is hijacked and
crashes within the prison walls, the President of the United
States becomes a hostage. Ex-soldier and criminal Snake Plissken
is offered a pardon if he can retrieve the President from the
dangerous environment within 24 hours.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Teen idol Kurt
Russell successfully changed his "Disney nice guy" image
in this gritty John Carpenter film. Russell portrayal as
the anti-heroic, remorseless
felon, Snake Plisken, is legendary. I love that this film
essentially has a ticking clock for its entirely. Snake has 24
hours to save the President, who is lost in a smoldering,
gang-infested hell-scape that used to be New York City. Tick.
Tick. Tick. You're not going to want to miss this

"Gentlemen, you can't

President Merkin Muffley
Why watch this? This
is THE great black comedy about the Cold War.
Plot Summary:
In this Cold War satire, a paranoid US General unilaterally
initiates a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. This forces the
President, his advisors, and a British liaison officer to
desperately try and recall the bombers before the situation
escalates into global catastrophe. However, unforeseen obstacles
and misunderstandings complicate their efforts to prevent a
devastating worldwide nuclear exchange.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This film is often in the discussion for greatest dark comedy ever
made. I do like it, but it's just too satirical for me. I
guess I just don't think nuclear annihilation is that funny.
From the film's standpoint, launching the bomb IS the
point. This Kubrick project has an all-star cast, and features
the brilliant Peter Sellers in several roles. The final scene,
where Slim Pickens rides the missile, is a dark comedy scene for the ages. |

Plot Summary: The
story is set in dystopian 2027, twenty years since the last baby
was born due to a mysterious infertility in women. This has led
to war, global chaos, and a general sense of dread. England
remains an isolated country still holding onto some form of
government. It is now a police state, rounding up refugees,
deporting them, or worse. Theo Faron, a former
activist, is forcibly taken by a group of militants, called the
Fishes, led by his ex-wife Julian. They want him to use his
connections to acquire transit papers for a young girl named Kee.
Theo quickly becomes the only chance Kee has to get her out of a

The film's premise will blow you away. That and Emily Blunt.
Plot Summary: In a

public relations officer, Major William Cage, is thrust into a
combat scenario. After dying in the ensuing battle, he finds
himself in a time loop, repeatedly reliving the same day and
being killed over and over. He seeks out a formidable Special

The hard-working Tom Cruise has done his share of sci-fi

excellent CGI effects and a stellar cast, this intense,
time-jumping alien-infested fare is really a blast. You will have to

pretty good action hero herself! Bill Paxton, who portrays

superb. Sadly, he would

Why watch this? ...
it's a sci-fi action flick that features Mr. Universe as a relentless

Plot Summary:

"It is in your nature to
destroy yourselves." The T-800 Terminator
Why watch this? Cameron delivers an incredible sequel using
ground-breaking
effects, a buffed-up Linda Hamilton, and a flipped narrative.
Plot Summary:
A reprogrammed cyborg is sent back in time to protect a young
John Connor from an advanced, shape-shifting Terminator designed
to eliminate him. John and his mother Sarah join forces with the
protector to prevent the coming nuclear apocalypse by destroying
the technology that creates Skynet. Together, they must combat
the relentless new threat while fighting to change the future
and ensure human survival.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This sequel is bigger and bolder than the original. Still desperate to
win the battle, the future's
machines send another Terminator - this one more lethal and
advanced than the original. Humankind sends back a T-800 Terminator (similar
to the original
film's cyborg), only it has been re-programmed to protect Sarah
and John
at all costs. This has all
the cool ass elements of the original film, yet it's characters are
more fully explored, and it's message is more poignant. Linda
Hamilton flexes (literally) her acting muscles and
newcomer Edward
Furlong shines her son, the young John Connor. |

Plot Summary: Earth

WALL-E, the last remaining trash-compacting robot, discovers a
tiny living plant, initiating a chain of events that could
potentially allow humanity to return to Earth. He follows a
probe named EVE to the Axiom, where they must overcome
challenges posed by the ship's autopilot.

Dad's Preview:
How can a film set after the end of the Earth be warm,
poignant, and even inspiring? Pixar pulls it off, as we follow
the adventures of a lone, trash-gathering robot. His (we assume

Why watch this?
It's haunting, brooding and dark... and a mesmerizing sci-fi classic.
Plot Summary: In a
dystopian future Los Angeles, a burnt-out detective (aka: a
"blade runner"), Rick Deckard, is tasked with hunting down and
"retiring" a group of advanced androids called replicants,
who have escaped from off-world colonies. These replicants seek
to find their creator and extend their limited life-spans, while
the blade runner wrestles with the complex morality of his job
and his growing connection to a beautiful replicant who believes
she is human.

Dad's Preview:
This great sci-fi noir crime film features Ford and a
fine supporting cast. It's a visual feast showing Earth's future
as an over-crowded, technologically-advanced dystopia
darkened by the constant drizzle of acid rain. Advanced robots,
called replicants, are so lifelike, they are
indistinguishable from humans. Some in fact, are so sentient that they don't
even know they are robots. This certainly blurs the line between
A.I. and humanity. Steely-eyed Rutger Hauer steals every scene as the psychotic replicant, Roy. |

Why watch this?
The original 1956 film was creepy. This remake is downright terrifying.
Plot Summary:
A San Francisco health inspector, Matthew Bennell, and his

being replaced by alien duplicates. These duplicates appear
identical to the humans they replace but are devoid of emotion
and empathy. As the alien takeover spreads throughout the city,
Bennell and Driscoll, along with two friends, must attempt to

Dad's Preview:
The premise alone is too unbearable to
imagine. The filmmakers succeed in creating the sense of dread
from the
original 1956 film, but it is much more unnerving,
which elevates this masterpiece. The ending will stay in your mind for

thought Leonard Nimoy (in a rare non-Star Trek role) was
a key to this film's success. |

Instant classic. As a huge fan of the 80's Mel Gibson Mad Max films, I
really thought the franchise was over, and I was OK with that. Then
creator/director George Miller hatches this tour de force.
It blows you away with each action sequence. Tom Hardy amply
fills Mr. Gibson's steady shoes. That said, it is Charlize Theron who steals
the film as Furiosa. She is one bad-ass survivor. This epic is visually stunning.
Let's hope this is the first film in another trilogy for Max and

the sky and their bombs did nothing.
Nothing was effective
against them." -
Dr. Clayton Forrester
Why watch this?
This is the best of the early sci-fi films about aliens.
Plot Summary: Earth
is suddenly invaded by Martians in powerful war machines,
initiating a global conflict as humanity struggles to defend
itself. Scientist Clayton Forrester and Sylvia Van Buren are
among those who experience firsthand the devastating attacks and
attempt to find a weakness in the invaders' seemingly
impenetrable defenses.

Dad's Preview:
Though I prefer the more terrifying remake in 2005, the original movie
is a class above its 1950's sci-fi counterparts. I am sure back then, this film
shocked a more innocent audience. Released
during the Cold War, it was influenced by the paranoia
regarding the Russians and their atomic weaponry. The film won the Oscar for Special Effects.
The film was based on the novel by
H. G. Wells, a pioneer in sci-fi writings. |

"George... I speak to you
as a friend – more as a brother... if that machine can do what
you say it can,
destroy it. Destroy it, George, before it
destroys you!" – David Filby
Why watch this?
It's a thought-provoking rendition of H. G. Wells' classic novel.
Plot Summary:
Set in Victorian England, the film follows an inventor who
builds a machine to travel through time. His journey takes him
into a distant future where humanity has split into two distinct
groups: the peaceful, surface-dwelling Eloi and the monstrous,
subterranean Morlocks. He becomes entangled in their struggle
and works to understand the secrets behind their existence and
the decline of mankind.
| |
Dad's Quick Review:
The concept of traveling through time is a fantasy of which most of us
have dreamt. It's also ideal fodder for science fiction. What
makes this story so mind-boggling is the glance we see of our future. We all
expect that mankind will reach a peaceful nirvana, but there is
an equal likelihood of something far darker. This film, though
made in 1960, showcases from ground-breaking special effects and
make-up. Its influence can be seen in subsequent
films such as
Planet of the Apes
(1968) and
Logan's Run
(1976). The goal of these cautionary tales is to show us
humans that what we do now may impact our planet's future.

and Deep Dive of The Matrix
"Human beings are a
disease, a cancer of this planet. You are a plague, and we are
the cure." - Agent Smith to Morpheus, as he interrogates
him
Why watch this?
Conceptually, visually, creatively - this film set a new
action sci-fi standard.
Plot Summary:
A computer programmer named Thomas Anderson, known in the
hacking underworld as Neo, feels that something is fundamentally
wrong with his reality. He is contacted by the enigmatic
Morpheus and Trinity, who offer him the chance to discover a
shocking truth: that his world is actually a computer-generated
simulation. Upon swallowing a red pill, Neo awakens in the
desolate real world and begins a journey to free humanity from
the machines that have enslaved them.

Dad's Preview:
A few short minutes into The Matrix, I realized I was
seeing the future - it was like nothing I'd experienced before.
By the end, I was completely inside my own head. What just
happened?! I had to see it again. And again. It was
revolutionary cinema that warped all senses of reality. What a
mind trip! And the soundtrack is edgy, ass-kicking alternative music. This was a
wise career move for Reeves, but the best performances were by
newcomers Carrie-Anne
Moss as Trinity and Hugo Weaving as the digital assassin, Agent
Smith. |

"We've all lost someone we
love. But we do it my way! Fear is our ally. The gasoline will
be ours.
Then you shall have your revenge.” – Lord Humungus
Why watch this? A bigger budget helped
the second Max film cement its place in
post-apocalyptic film lore.
Plot Summary:
Following a global war and civilization's collapse, loner Max
scavenges the Australian wasteland for fuel and supplies. He
encounters a small community defending their oil refinery from a
ruthless biker gang led by deformed Lord Humungus. Max,
initially seeking only his own advantage, eventually agrees to
help the community transport their precious fuel in a desperate
bid for freedom and survival.

Dad's Preview:
This is a mercilessly violent film set in a future where the
powerful enact their will upon those unable to defend
themselves. Good people are raped, tortured and murdered by
roving bands of brutal psychopaths; this is not
a place for the weak. Into this hellscape rides Max, a
damaged ex-road cop who reluctantly helps those in need. It's a powerful film,
with Gibson at his brooding best. Director George Miller knows that a
compelling villain makes the film and this film's most
entertaining bad guy is
Vernon Wells, as the always intense Wez. The vehicle stunts are
incredible. The road's open, see you in the wasteland... |

"Man is a nuisance. He
eats up his food supply in the forest, then migrates to our
green belts and
ravages our crops. The sooner he is
exterminated, the better." – Doctor Zaius
Why watch this? ...
it's compelling through-out, but the last scene makes it a
legend.
Plot Summary:
An astronaut crew crash-lands on a mysterious planet in the
distant future, where they discover a highly evolved society of
apes has become the dominant species, enslaving primitive
humans. As the lone surviving spaceman navigates this new world
and seeks to prove his intelligence to his captors, he uncovers
the shocking truth about the planet's identity and past.

Dad's Preview:
This is the first science fiction film I remember watching, and
what a primer! It was certainly ahead of its time. I was so intrigued by the role reversal
between ape and man. It's humbling to witness a planet where man
is the lowest animal - being hunted, killed, enslaved and even
domesticated. The film's extensive make-up and eerie,
avant-garde soundtrack were nominated for Oscars. Like many of writer Rod Serling's
Twilight Zone episodes, this masterwork of his is a real think-piece about humanity
and our own pre-conceived, hubris-laden ideals. |
