"All you got is you and
what you have to say to people and they are listening right now
and they are not
going to be listening forever. Trust me. So you gotta grab it and you don't apologize." –
Jack
Why watch this? It
is nice to see the usually outrageous Lady Gaga portray a
regular girl. She's a beautiful soul.
Plot Summary:
Jackson Maine, an established but troubled musician battling
addiction, discovers and falls in love with Ally, a talented
singer-songwriter who's given up on her dreams. He helps launch
her career and they embark on a passionate romance, but as
Ally's star rises, Jackson's personal demons begin to tear their
relationship apart.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This film is about attaining success; working hard to achieve
fame. Jack and Ally, both performing artists, have the coolest
job on earth - creating music. However, there is a real toll
the devil asks for everything they enjoy. Jack just can't seem
to handle it, and is very self-destructive. Ally, a talent Jack
discovered, is on the verge
of super-stardom. Cooper and Gaga's performances are gold, as is
Sam Elliott, who shines as Jack's older brother, Bobby. |

Dr. Snaut
Why watch this? This
poignant Soviet sci-fi classic will get you thinking, if you let
it.
Plot Summary:
Psychologist Kris Kelvin is sent to a remote space station
orbiting the mysterious, sentient planet Solaris to investigate
the severe emotional breakdowns of its remaining crew. Upon
arrival, Kelvin finds the station in disarray and is confronted
by physical manifestations of his own repressed memories and
guilt, including his long-dead wife, Hari.

Dad's Preview:
Slow-burn films like this require time to ruminate
inside the mind. I watched this initially and could only
muster, "What the heck?" After reading some articles, I
was able to grasp more in my second viewing. This film's
genius is its use of the science fiction medium as a
tool for humans to examine their own existence through
events like grief, love and emotional pain. On a space
station, an alien "presence" manifests itself as live
human creations - each pulled from a crew member's
memory: a friend, a son, a wife. The sheer thought of
this is madness to even entertain. The film does
move slowly, but it has purpose. It is a think-piece.
Appreciating a work like this is an indication that your
film knowledge is growing, becoming more complex, and
likewise, more demanding of plots that merely hint,
while allowing your intellect to fill in the gaps. |

Lana
Why watch this?
This is the true story of Brandon Teena, a trans-man who was
murdered.
Plot Summary: Based
on the true story, Brandon Teena, a trans man, living in rural
Nebraska, navigates his life and identity while seeking love and
acceptance in his community. He falls for Lana, a girl who wants
to get away from her small town. When "friends" around them find
out the truth, fear and bigotry surfaces and does what it often
does - hate what it has been taught to hate, and destroy what it
doesn't understand.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This painful and shocking film introduced the world to Hilary
Swank. Her performance elevates the film. When it comes to the
trans community, I just don't understand why people can't just
leave them alone. I'm talking to you - the bigots, Christians,
Jews, Muslims, bullies, and anyone else who thinks they have the
right to hurt fellow human beings. Because of that, the boy inside the man writing this
review is heart-broken. But know, trans community, I stand with
you. |

"We're changing the

Hanna Schmitz
Why watch this?
There are always complexities around affairs with strangers.
This one is a doozie.
Plot Summary:
In 1958, a 15-year-old German lad, Michael, meets a much older
tram operator, Hanna. They soon become lovers and Hanna
incorporates sessions where he reads his school books to her.
This steamy affair is abruptly ended when Hanna leaves town due
to a work promotion. Michael takes it hard, but eventually
enrolls at Heidelberg University School of Law. As part of
class, he attends a trial of several former Nazi SS guards for
the murder of Jewish women and children locked in a burning
church near Kraków, Poland.
| |
Dad's Preview:
What started as a sweet, if age
inappropriate, romance, suddenly derails into a Nazi war trial.
This film is told through a series of flashbacks by the older
Michael in 1995. This gem is a compelling, complicated
drama that will hold your attention right to its bittersweet
conclusion. Miss Winslet, once again, gives a performance worthy
of adulation. |

"Nothing

day. That's the thrilling part
of all this. It just comes and
hits and runs me over like a g**damn freight train." –
Alice
Why watch this?
It's a superb, yet very painful, story about battling alcoholism.
Plot Summary:
This is a agonizing story about an ordinary woman, Alice, who is
an alcoholic. After a serious incident, she realizes that she
has to leave her family and enter rehab. She finds help at rehab
and moves back home. Her husband, Michael, has trouble
re-adjusting to the new, sober Alice, who is now stronger, more
vocal, AND still fighting her addiction. It's going to take her
husband to confront how much he was also part of her problem.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This was not the film I thought it would be. It was
completely mis-marketed as
a romance. It is way more a family drama about alcoholism. The performances by Ryan and
Garcia are top-notch! It is one of the best films about
addiction, enablers, recovery, and how hard it is for addicts to reinsert
themselves back into their old life. |

Why watch this?
There is not a more tragic love story than this classic crafted by
the Bard himself.
Plot Summary:
In Verona, a long-standing and violent feud exists between the
Montague and Capulet families. Young Romeo Montague attends a
Capulet masked ball, where he meets and falls deeply in love
with Juliet Capulet. Despite their families' animosity, the
lovers secretly marry, hoping their union will end the
generations-old conflict. However, a turn of events, including a
murder, threatens to tear their secret marriage apart.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is one of the best film adaptations of a Shakespeare work. A
praised classic, it features the feud between two families: Montagues
and Capulets. Then the unthinkable happens, a boy and girl
from each house fall in love. Can the two young lovers survive this ordeal and
their families' part in it? They
do have a loyal ally in the kind Friar Laurence. We'll never forget
Hussey as Juliet, and the poignant musical score aptly named "Love Theme". |

This steamy '80's romantic crime drama features two beautiful individuals in

"Nothing lasts really.
Neither happiness nor despair. Not even life lasts very long.
There'll come a time in the future when I shan't mind about this
anymore, when I can look back and say quite peacefully and
cheerfully how silly I was. No, no, I don't want that time to
come ever." - Laura Jesson's secret thoughts
Why watch this?
Some affairs begin in the most innocent of settings.
Plot Summary: A
married housewife, Laura Jesson, meets a kind stranger, Dr. Alec
Harvey, at a train station after he removes a piece of grit from
her eye. Their initial chance encounter develops into a series
of clandestine meetings where they fall deeply in love,
struggling with the guilt and complications of their forbidden
affair. Ultimately, they must confront the fact that their time
together must end.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Two ships, passing in a dark, smoky night... This classic love
tale is so wonderfully British. Two middle-class married people
meet, by chance, in a train station coffee shop. There is an
attraction, and after a few encounters, they finally must
confront the future of this thing they now have going on. Aside
from two incredible performances by Johnson (she was nominated
for Best Actress) and Howard, what I found most effective was
the constant narration by Laura. We get to hear her most
intimate thoughts. At first she flirts with the idea of an
affair, next she becomes obsessed by it, and finally she plays
out the potential damage it will cause to those in her life,
namely her husband and son. It all feels completely real, and we
wonder which path the plot will take. |

"You will, I trust, excuse me if I do not

Why watch this?
Gary Oldman's portrayal of Dracula is singularly unique... and
terrifying!
Plot Summary: In
1897, a young solicitor, Jonathan Harker, travels to
Transylvania to handle a real estate transaction for the
mysterious Count Dracula. Upon seeing a photograph of Harker's
fiancée, Mina, Dracula believes she is the reincarnation of his
deceased wife. Imprisoning Harker, the Count travels to London
to find Mina, unleashing a reign of terror and seduction upon
those seek to protect the girl.

Dad's Preview:
Universal Studio's
Dracula
(1931), starring the iconic Bela Lugosi, is certainly
beloved, but I grew to love this rendition more. This is a
masterpiece of film art. It's visually stunning, using state of
the art make-up and special effects, vivid imagery, lighting,
shadows, and creative scene transitions. It creates a creepy
mood and suffocating tone, aligned with Jonathan Harker's
descent into the clutches of the Count and his sirens. How good
is this film? Good enough to negate Keanu Reeves'
not-so-realistic British accent. Also good is Gary Oldman as the
Count - he's both menacing and sophisticated. |

"You cannot have it both
ways. A dancer who relies upon the doubtful comforts of human
love can never be a great dancer. Never." – Boris
Lermontov
Why watch this? It
really is a work of dance art that overwhelms the senses.
Plot Summary:
In South France, a driven young ballerina must choose between
her intense ambition to become a great dancer and the love of a
composer who wants her to lead a more balanced life. Her
demanding instructor, obsessed with the belief that a dancer can
have no other life than art, pushes her to an emotional breaking
point. This psychological conflict unfolds as she dances the
lead in a new ballet production called "The Red Shoes."
| |
Dad's Preview:
Often called the "Best Dance Movie Ever", this allegorical tale
follows a dance company as it performs a ballet rendition of
Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale,
The Red Shoes. At the plot's center is the price paid
for perfection, and how a determined young girl is pulled
between a demanding, possessive impresario, and her unexpected
love for a budding young composer. The brilliance here is that
both the inspiring fairy tale and the film's plot follow similar
paths, both heading toward the same fates. Equally mesmerizing
is the film's performance of the title ballet, in which the
stage is magically transformed into a fantastical dream-vision,
mirroring our heroine's complex emotions, fears and desires.
This cautionary story has a lot to offer aside from it's amazing
Technicolor presentation: incredible dance sequences,
over-the-top obsessions, and an ending that made me gasp out
loud.

Plot Summary:

photograph of a beautiful actress named Elise McKenna, taken in
1912. Driven by an intense desire to meet her, he uses

1912.
Using hypnosis, he travels back in time to meet her. Once he

Why watch this?
Most of the film is about pain, its aftermath, and how folks try
to move on.
Plot Summary:
A white corrections officer, Hank Grotowski, works on death row.
After a series of personal tragedies, he quits his job and meets
Leticia Musgrove, an African-American woman also dealing with
immense personal loss. Unbeknownst to them both, Hank was one of
the officers who carried out the execution of Leticia's husband,
creating a complex and tragic connection between them.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is a brutally hard film to watch at times. There are many
tragedies that befall its flawed characters: A prisoner is executed.
A young man takes his own life. A
mother's child is killed by a car. Each calamity is peppered with
generational racism. Still, amid all that, two lost, emotionally
wounded
people
find each other and try to salvage something from the carnage.
Performances are stellar all the way around, including
Thornton and the late Heath Ledger. However, it is Halle Berry, whose pain is
palpable, who shines, and she justifiably won the Oscar for Best Actress. |

Why watch this?
This is film noir's holy grail. It has all the classic elements.
Plot Summary:
Rick Blaine is an expatriate running a seedy bar in Casablanca.
In walks Ilsa Lund, an old love, who is now married to Victor
Laszlo, a secret Czech resistance leader trying to escape the
city. The love triangle heats up as Ilsa clearly still has
feelings for Rick. However, World War II is also heating up, and
although Rick claims to be neutral, he certainly has no love for
the Germans.
| |
Dad's Preview:
I once could not understand all the hype for this film.
The reason lay in when I viewed it. I was already
familiar with Bogart and Bergman from their other films.
I was also "Meh" on the noir genre. So Casablanca
felt kinda been-there-done-that. However, after
taking time to re-think my perspective, I now get it,
and am elated. I love discovering what makes a film
great. This noir classic is a quality,
ground-breaking, and very politically-complicated, film.
It's forbidden love angle makes is a splendid romance.
You also can't say enough about Bogey's performance as Rick. Nobody is better
at portraying the man-in-control, gaming his surroundings for
profit or to stay alive - that's always been his sex appeal.
So, "Play it once, Sam, for old times' sake." and
embrace this film as the gem it is. |

Plot Summary:
Edward, an artificial humanoid, is created by an inventor who
died before completing him, leaving him with scissors instead of
hands. Edward lives in solitude in a Gothic castle until a kind
Avon lady brings him to her suburban family's home. While trying
to adapt to his new surroundings, Edward uses his unique hands
to create beautiful topiaries and hairstyles, becoming a local
celebrity. However, his gentle nature and burgeoning love for
the family's daughter are eventually challenged by suspicion and
misunderstanding from the townspeople.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Tim Burton's films have never fit in with standard Hollywood
offerings. I love that these often magical oddities blaze their own trail. This is the tale of
Edward, a loving soul, cursed with
imperfections that make him an outcast. Like all of us, he is searching for
love and acceptance, but often only finds fear, cruelty and even
violence. Like King Kong or Frankenstein's monster, he is
misunderstood, and driven out, leaving behind only the very few
who will miss him. |

Dad's Full (Spoiler) Review
and Deep Dive of Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
"Meet me in Montauk..." –
Clementine
Why watch this? It's
the polar opposite of a RomCom, and the greatest movie about
real love I have ever seen.
Plot Summary:
Joel discovers his former girlfriend, Clementine, has had their
relationship erased from her memory following a breakup. Out of
despair, Joel decides to undergo the same procedure to erase
Clementine from his own mind. However, as his memories are
systematically removed, Joel begins to realize the importance of
those experiences, even the painful ones. He attempts to resist
the erasure process and hold onto the memories of Clementine,
leading to a surreal and fragmented journey through his
subconscious.

Dad's Preview:
Perhaps the thing about romantic films (that turns me off) is
that they usually end up sugar-coated, and frankly, unrealistic. This
incredibly unique cinematic triumph bends reality to
intelligently
show us the ups and downs of a romantic relationship; the vulnerability of the
human psyche; and the faint possibility that sometimes an
imperfect love is still worth everything. This master class in
filmmaking forever changed
the way I view movies - I used to want to be entertained, now I
search for films that impart meaning. |

"The press knows the size
of Titanic, now I want them to marvel at her speed, too. We must
give them
something new to print. And the maiden voyage of
Titanic must make headlines!" – I. Bruce Ismay
Why watch this?
A truly epic telling of the greatest maritime disaster.
Plot Summary:
A young, upper-class lady, Rose DeWitt Bukater, feels trapped by
her engagement to a wealthy but controlling man, Cal. Aboard the
luxurious RMS Titanic, she meets Jack Dawson, a free-spirited
artist traveling in third class. Despite their stark class
differences and Rose's engagement, they fall deeply in love.
However, their romance unfolds against the backdrop of the
ship's fateful maiden voyage and the impending disaster that
will forever change their lives.

Dad's Preview:
I've always found sea disasters interesting to research. What
went wrong? Could it have been prevented? The story of
R.M.S. Titanic is an exercise in man's hubris. For god's sake
they called
her "Unsinkable", before she had sailed a single
league. The film, its cinematography and effects are very well
done. Even the fictional love story is engaging. As horrible as
it was, the actual sinking, which takes quite a while, is
remarkable to witness on the big screen, and I loved every
minute of it. |

"I'm
going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be
hungry again. No, nor any of my folk.
If I have to lie, steal,
cheat or kill, as God is my witness, I'll never be hungry
again." - Scarlett O'Hara
Why watch this?
... the burning of Atlanta, which is a spectacle on screen to behold.
Plot Summary:
It follows the life of Scarlett O'Hara, a spoiled, rich plantation debutante.
Then the Civil War begins... As the South's eventual loss
becomes evident, Atlanta is burned. In the aftermath, Scarlett
finally returns to her devastated plantation home. With her
father dead, she has a fight on her hands to keep it. Luckily,
the noble scoundrel, Rhett Butler, gives her aid.

Dad's Preview:
This is the great American story of the Old South. As I have watched this film through the years,
my affection for Scarlett has evolved. The film is about her and
the many conflicts she endures. My Mom, though, only saw the
handsome Clark Gable and all his confident charm. Many have
called this a "racist" film - I disagree. Sure, it portrays a
racist South, yet also gave us an admirable black character in
Hattie McDaniel as the strong-willed servant Mammy. She was the
first African American to win and Academy Award (for Best
Supporting Actress). |

The

"This here's Miss Bonnie
Parker. I'm Clyde Barrow. We rob banks." -
Clyde Barrow
Why watch this?
To many Southwestern poor folks, the Barrow gangsters were heroes. Texas
lawmen saw it differently.
Plot Summary: During
the Great Depression, a bored waitress named Bonnie Parker meets
ex-con Clyde Barrow and they begin a crime spree across America.
As they rob banks and evade law enforcement, their exploits
become more violent. The film follows their love story and
growing notoriety as they become infamous criminals.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This story chronicles real-life, Texas-born, bank robbers Bonnie Parker and
Clyde Barrow, who pillaged in the South during the Great
Depression. It all but immortalized actors Faye Dunaway and
Warren Beatty for their
performances. This film introduced a more realistic type of
film-making, breaking more grittier ground. The gang's mayhem
and violence is sometimes hard to watch. The film's brutal ending
is now considered one of cinema's most iconic moments. |
