Dad's Preview:
At the cinematic high-point of film noir, there was no
movie more filled with sexual innuendo and plots of
betrayal than this drama. It centers on two lost souls,
bitter about their lives, who are determined to better
their situation via any means necessary, up to and
including murder - the two horrible people deserve each
other. Lana Turner, as a stunning femme fatale, and John
Garfield, as a desperate drifter, dominate the film.
Famed director Quentin Tarantino loved this noir
offering so much that he referenced it in
Kill
Bill Vol. 2 (2004), where retired pimp, Esteban
Vellajo, recalls Bill's obsession with blondes. |

violent cross-country chase combined a Tarantino script and Tony
Scott's brutal action direction.
Plot Summary:
Clarence Worley is a comic book enthusiast who falls in love
with and marries Alabama Whitman, a call girl hired to spend the
night with him. Their whirlwind romance takes a dangerous turn

violence and an accidental acquisition of a suitcase full of
cocaine. The young lovers then embark on a chaotic cross-country
journey to California, hoping to sell the drugs and start a new
life, all while being pursued by mobsters seeking their stolen
property.

Dad's Preview:
When two young, toxic lovers stumble
upon a bag of cocaine, and decide to keep it, the carnage begins.
The bad people always
wants their drugs and money back. This fast-paced crime drama was deemed "gutter
poetry" by Rolling Stone's Pat Travers, and that sums it up
perfectly. It's a smorgasbord of dope violence buoyed up by strong,
quirky performances. |

What can one man do against a gang of mobsters? Bogart had such a unique way of inhabiting his roles

"I thought we might
end this evening with a discussion of the soul. All of the
greatest religions speak of the soul's endurance before the end
of life. So what then does it mean to die?" – Eisenheim
Why watch this? This
is a well-done mystery with an incredible magician at its core.
Plot Summary:
In turn-of-the-century Vienna, a gifted magician named Eisenheim
reunites with his childhood love, Sophie, who is now engaged to
a ruthless, powerful Crown Prince. Eisenheim uses his
spectacular stage illusions and apparent supernatural abilities
to challenge the social constraints and the corrupt authority
standing between them. As the jealous Prince attempts to expose
and destroy the magician, a local Inspector must choose between
his duty to the crown and his admiration for Eisenheim's craft.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Loosely based on a Steven Millhauser short story, this
intelligent, well-crafted tale centers on two young
lovers, separated because of their financial and royal
status, who find themselves reunited in a magic show,
hosted by Eisenheim the Illusionist. The renown
man's tricks are quite ingenious, pushing the local
authorities to suspect supernatural involvements. This
film successfully transports us to 1889 Vienna, and the
romantic leads, Norton and Biel, are delightful as
Eisenheim and the lovely Duchess Sophia. However, the
best performance is by Paul Giamatti, whose nuanced
portrayal of Chief Inspector Uhl is truly amazing. This
period piece is magically entertaining. |

Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn made two films together, the other

"Of course, you won't

Plot Summary:
After the suspicious death of her husband in Paris, Regina
"Reggie" Lampert, garners a lot of interest from many
individuals including the local police inspector, three
extremely tough henchmen, a CIA Administrator, and a suave,
charming American. The focus is centered around $250,000 dollars

"You ride off with somebody

Why watch this?
I love movies about somebody who has had their fill of corporate greed.
Plot Summary: Sonny
Steele, a washed-up rodeo star turned corporate spokesperson,
rebels against his handlers and the company he represents by
running away with their champion racehorse, Rising Star. He
discovers the horse is being mistreated and drugged for
promotional appearances, so he sets out to return the steed into

pursuit, hoping to get the exclusive story.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This a great film about a broken-down cowboy, Sonny, who has had enough
of the glitz and ruthlessness of fame. The opening
setting of Las Vegas is appropriate. Sonny decides to kidnap
(well, horse-nap)
a famous racehorse and release him back to the wild. Redford and Fonda are
superb as an unlikely pair, both doing what they think is right.

Why watch this?
This is "Hitchcock Light" - a delightful romance
with a nip of suspense.
Plot Summary:
When a string of jewel robberies plagues the French Riviera,
retired cat burglar John Robie becomes the prime suspect. To
clear his name, Robie sets out to catch the impostor mimicking
his signature style. His investigation leads him to encounter a
wealthy American heiress, Frances Stevens, who finds herself
caught up in the pursuit of the elusive thief.

Dad's Preview:
The real genius of Hitchcock was his range at filmmaking. He
could do suspense, horror, and/or mystery. Within these, he often
varied the film's mood: one might be dark and brooding, one
might be light and almost comedic. This film is a
Rom-Com about falling for the naughty man. The fact that he's a
cat burglar is almost an after-thought. Regardless it's fun to
watch two beautiful stars engage in witty banter, and play that
little game of cat (burglar) and mouse. |

Ava
Why watch this? This
is a superb story about artificial intelligence and the risk it
may pose.
Plot Summary:
Caleb Smith is a young programmer who wins a competition to
spend a week at the remote estate of Nathan Bateman, the
reclusive CEO of his company. Upon arrival, Caleb discovers he's
been chosen to participate in a groundbreaking experiment:
administering a
Turing test to Ava, an advanced humanoid AI created by
Nathan. Caleb's task is to evaluate Ava's consciousness and
determine if her intelligence is indistinguishable from that of
a human. This leads to unforeseen revelations and a complex
examination of artificial intelligence and humanity.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Sci-fi often asks its audience about the meaning of
being "human". Today, modern computing is asking a new
question: What role do humans have if AI can run things
better. Then it's about two clicks away from SkyNet and
Terminators wiping out the human race. But I digress.
This smart, tense, engrossing film is eye-candy for us
nerds because it is futuristically beautiful. As
expected, it certainly calls into question what it means
to be human, and whether it's wise to create sentience
within a machine. |

Why watch this?
If you are a married man, this film will keep you married.
Plot Summary: A

refuses to let their affair end. Her obsession escalates into
increasingly dangerous and threatening behavior, putting his
life and family in jeopardy.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is the worse-case
scenario for men who cheat on their wives. I could not believe
that innocent, plain Glenn Close could transform into Alex, a
foxy seductress. After a brief affair, she is jilted. Her
heartbreak
turns her into an obsessive, insane stalker. Michael Douglas is
also awesome as the cheater, who, after the initial mistake,
just wants it to end and go away. Alex, however, will not be
denied, with disastrous results. Just remember to pass on the rabbit
stew. |

Plot Summary:

Dad's Preview:
I enjoy musicals, but this one, as it has for many

behaving strangely and possibly possessed. As Scottie delves

| |
Dad's Preview:
It took me a long time to watch Vertigo, because my natural
(if flawed)
tenancy is to run from over-hyped films listed as "the best of".
I now see why this mystery is so liked. It's the complexity of James Stewart's
character, Scottie. Unlike past roles for Hitch, Stewart's
protagonist is unsure, tortured, afraid, obsessed, even a
little kinky. It IS shocking and intense, even if it
moves a little slow at times (that's Hitch, building suspense).
This crime mystery is worth a serious

Plot Summary:
Joan Wilder is a shy romance novelist who must travel to

Dad's Preview:
Hot on the heels of

When does a little harmless voyeurism
become too much, and potentially get a person in trouble? I

Hitchcock had something else in mind - there is going to be a price

Plot Summary:
Set during World War I, in German East Africa, Charlie Allnut, a

goes undercover in the boy's rural Amish community to protect
him from the killers. The detective must navigate the unfamiliar

dangerous individuals responsible for the crime. The film

Dad's Preview:
Using the
Pennsylvania Amish community as the backdrop for a crime
thriller was an incredible idea.
This is one of Harrison
Ford's best acting efforts as a tough Philly detective who is
forced to hide
a young Amish boy from corruption in his own police department. The
film is both warm and pleasant, yet extremely intense at times. An incredible musical score enhances
the idyllic countryside scenes. This received 8 Oscar nominations (winning Best Screenplay and Best
Editing). |

Why watch this?
The building suspense within this film is quietly palpable.

Dad's Preview:
In my eyes, what elevates this Hitchcock thriller is its elegant
anxiety. Everybody is so damn polite, and they rarely say what they
really feel or intend. So much so, that when it finally occurs,
it is a long-awaited reward. The film reunites Claude Rains
and Ingrid Bergman from
Casablanca (1942), and throws in
the amazing
Cary Grant. The climax is a film school master-class on how to build
up tension to an ending worth remembering. |

Dad's Preview:
George Lucas (Star Wars) and Steven Spielberg (Jaws) worked
together on this little side project for the hunky Harrison Ford. The result was a cinematic
homage to the one-reel, action-packed serials of the 1930's.
Raiders transcends its own genre and stands alone as a
masterpiece of the white-knuckle adventure film. It features a
stellar supporting cast and an amazing John Williams' soundtrack. The
result was solid
gold. This film catapulted Ford's career as a
legitimate international superstar, and gave Spielberg the power
to make any film he wanted.
