"Two hundred people in
that room and each one wants me to be somebody else. They should
just fuck off and let me be." - Bob Dylan
Why watch this?
There was folk music, then there was Dylan.
Plot Summary: This
biopic follows a young Bob Dylan as he arrives in NYC's
Greenwich Village in the early 1960s to make his mark on the
folk music scene. He quickly achieves meteoric success and
becomes a cultural phenomenon, while simultaneously juggling
complex romantic relationships and his growing status as the
voice of a generation. Ultimately, the film chronicles his bold,
highly controversial decision to abandon traditional acoustic
folk for electric rock-and-roll.

Dad's Preview: My
first college history course used a book with a
different approach. It presented our nation's history
through the lives of four men: George Washington, Martin
Luther King, John F. Kennedy and Bob Dylan. Quite
revolutionary for Abilene, Texas. I learned there is
power in dissent; it's a right and a duty to protest;
and messages in song endure forever because our
struggles exist forever. This wonderful story covers the
early part of Dylan's life, and it spoke to me,
especially considering today's political mess. There is
a conflict within Mr. Dylan - he speaks against power an
injustice, yet wants to be left alone. I really enjoyed
his little interactions with Seeger, Baez and Cash.
Chalamet absolutely gets his folk on here, and its fun
to watch. Monica Barbaro kills it as Joan Baez, too.
This trip to the '60's is worth a look. |

"You must think me

Why watch this?
This is a very well-done rendition of the famous Broadway play.
Plot Summary:
Jean Valjean, a former convict who breaks parole seeking a new
life, is constantly pursued by the relentless Inspector Javert.
Valjean's journey involves his attempt to live an honest life
and becoming the guardian of a young girl named Cosette after
her mother's tragic demise. The film culminates amidst the
backdrop of political unrest and a student rebellion in Paris.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This iconic story of the French Revolution has been told many
times. This film version of Victor Hugo's novel is just too good
not to applaud. It follows the tragic lives of Jean Valjean, a
good man, and Javert, a mercilessly policeman. Valjean adopts
street waif Cosette, who will eventually fall in love with
Marius. There are amazing performances from Jackman, Seyfried,
and the unforgettable Anne Hathaway as Fantine, Cosette's
hopeless mother. Who knew she could sing? Well, she certainly
can. |

"Outside it is windy, but

Ceremonies
Why watch this? This
film is intelligent, fun, imperfect, cynical, and leaves you
with a lot to think about.
Plot Summary: In
1930s Berlin, a young, reserved English academic named Brian
Roberts becomes entangled in the vibrant, decadent world of a
local nightclub, the Kit Kat Club, run by a flamboyant Emcee. He
falls in love with the club's star performer, the unpredictable
and free-spirited American singer Sally Bowles, and they
navigate a complex, unconventional relationship amidst the rise
of the Nazi party. Their personal lives and the club's carefree
atmosphere eventually collide with the incoming regime.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Berlin was once a sophisticated hub of art, entertainment and
all bad and good that goes with a thriving metropolis. This
musical film, based loosly on Christopher Isherwood's book,
Goodbye to Berlin (1939), captures that time from the
viewpoint of a seedy Kit Kat Klub nightclub. The musical numbers
are peppered unabashedly with the same sexual energy that
surrounds the film's characters. No one is more promiscuous than
Sally, portrayed by Liza Minnelli (she steals the film and our
hearts). Sally and her fellow entertainers are faced with the
slow disintegration of Berlin, as the ultra-right Nazi party is
sweeps over Germany. This controversial film, featuring both
straight and gay relationships, was a smash with the Academy,
winning eight Oscars including Best Director, Best Actress, Best
Supporting Actor and Best Cinematography. It lost the 1972 Best
Picture award to
The Godfather. |

"Just because I
look like a man doesn't mean I have to smell like one." -
Mulan
Why watch this? This
may be my favorite of all of Disney's female lead roles.
Plot Summary:
Fearing for her ailing father's life, Mulan disguises herself as
a man and takes his place in the Imperial army to fight off a
Hun invasion. Accompanied by a disgraced family guardian dragon
and a lucky cricket, she trains alongside other recruits and
eventually demonstrates her cunning in battle. Her bravery earns
her the respect of her comrades and the Emperor, ultimately
saving China and bringing honor to her family.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This film was one of my daughter's favorites, and it is easy to
see why. Mulan is a maiden, suppressed and ignored, in the man's
world that was middle century China. Along the way she gets help from
a magical dragon (voiced by Eddie Murphy). This is a wonderful
film for girls of all ages, and it's refreshing to see a woman
become a warrior. |

"I'm going to be what I was
born to be: a performer that gives the people what they want:
a
touch of the heavens! Freddie f'ing Mercury." -
Freddie
Why watch this?
Queen was an integral part of my youth. This is their
story.
Plot Summary: This
rock and roll epoch follows Freddie Mercury and the legendary
rock band Queen. It chronicles their rise to fame, from the
band's formation to their iconic performance at Live Aid in
1985. Along the way we also explore Mercury's personal struggles
with his identity, relationships and drug use, amidst their
unparalleled success.

Dad's Preview:
In high school Queen rocked us like no other band. We Will
Rock You. Sheer Heart Attack. Another One Bites the Dust.
We had no idea that Freddie was gay. When I found out - it was
the first time I ever thought: "Wow. If a gay man can rock me
like that, then we must have a lot in common."
This is a splendid filmography, and I really feel Freddie would approve,
as did his former band-mates. This film takes us through the band's
formation, its hard-rocking success, Freddie's battle with
his sexuality and AIDS, and finally Queen's triumph at
the massive
Live Aid event in England. I am simultaneously saddened and inspired by
Freddie's bright shining life, as perfectly portrayed by Rami
Malek. You, my friend, are a Champion. |

Mudbound meets

Plot Summary:
Twin brothers, World War I veterans, return to their hometown in
1932 Mississippi hoping to open a juke joint and start a new
life. Their plans for a safe haven in the Jim Crow South take a
dark turn when a sinister, supernatural force descends upon
their community. The brothers and their community are forced to
face this ageless, unexpected evil.
| |
Dad's Preview:
My prediction is that this film is going to age really well and
become a cinema classic. It is helmed by a young black director,
Ryan Coogler, who certainly brings the goods. It also features a
rising black star in Michael B. Jordan, portraying the dual
roles of twins, Smoke and Stack. That said, this genre-bender
grabs its viewers with a compelling look at the 1930's American
South from the standpoint of the African Americans enduring it:
the field workers, the gangsters, the language and, oh man, the
music. Then it jettisons itself into the blackness of dark magic
and hungry denizens of the night. All that came before is shoved
aside for a battle of survival. I loved every second of this
film's creative vision, musical-centering and visceral action. |

Why watch this? It

regular girl. She's a beautiful soul.
Plot Summary:
Jackson Maine, an established but troubled musician battling
addiction, discovers and falls in love with Ally, a talented
singer-songwriter who's given up on her dreams. He helps launch
her career and they embark on a passionate romance, but as
Ally's star rises, Jackson's personal demons begin to tear their

Why watch this?
Jamie Foxx shines as the incomparable Ray Charles.
Plot Summary:
This biopic chronicles the life of legendary musician Ray
Charles, following his journey from a childhood of poverty and
tragedy in the South to his meteoric rise as a trailblazing star
in the 1950s and 60s. While achieving immense musical success,
he grapples with personal demons, including a long-term battle
with heroin addiction and the emotional trauma of losing his
sight and his brother at a young age.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This film delivers on two major fronts: First, it's a
wonderful journey back to the life and times of Ray
Charles - from humble beginnings to the top of the
charts. Mr. Charles wasn't a saint, but his story told
here is certainly compelling. Second, we are blessed to
sit back and appreciate Jamie Foxx as he becomes the
legend. His quirky performance is eerie, as he mimics
Ray's every mannerism. It helped that Foxx could play
piano, but he didn't sing for the film - for that, they
used recorded versions Ray's voice. Foxx deservedly won
the Best Actor Oscar. Though this film airs some of
Ray's demons, it is more about the obstacles in his path
and the eventual redemption that he earned. |

John
Why watch this?
This clever bio film jumps from reality to animated thought and
back, and it is brilliant!
Plot Summary:
Rocketman tells the incredible true story of Reginald Dwight's
journey from a shy piano prodigy to the global superstar Elton
John. The film chronicles his rise to fame alongside lyricist
Bernie Taupin, while also exploring his personal struggles with
relationships, identity, and addiction. Ultimately, it's a tale
of self-discovery and finding happiness and acceptance by
overcoming his inner demons.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Elton John's songs were a huge part of the background music of
my life. Bennie and the Jets at the Bulldog Inn for lunch in 7th
grade. Honky Cat blasting on my cousins 8-track. Tiny
Dancer in the college dorm. This movie, which Elton
approved, details a hard life, where a lack of affection from
his parents both motivated and devastated, causing an early life
of rampant substance abuse. This film honestly, yet elegantly,
presents Sir Elton's life. It also exposes some of the craziness that
fueled his onstage antics. |

Johnny Cash
Why watch this?
This amazing, heart-rending film takes us on the road with a
legend.
Plot Summary: This
biographical drama explores the life of country music icon
Johnny Cash, from his humble beginnings in rural Arkansas to his
explosive rise to fame. As his career takes off, his personal
life begins to unravel due to his struggles with substance abuse
and the breakdown of his first marriage. Ultimately, his
tempestuous romance and musical collaboration with fellow singer
June Carter become the driving force behind his personal
redemption and legendary success.
| |
Dad's Preview:
I am a Johnny Cash fan, not because I grew up with him,
but through discovery in my thirties. There is an
Americana honesty that he brings like no other. His five
American series albums, which he recorded late in
his life, are must-haves if you like music. This is the
telling of his hard-scrapple Arkansas roots, his rise to
fame, and the hard road to get to the only woman he ever
loved. This man lived a life worth hearing about.
Joaquin Phoenix's performance is so damn good. The only
better performance is that of Reese Witherspoon as June
Carter. She is incredible, as the feisty, funny and
angelic Miss Carter; and she deservedly won the Best
Actress Oscar. They both did all the musical work
including the vocals. Wow. When the final credits
rolled, I felt like I had experienced their
tumultuous lives, and now I more clearly understood the

Why watch this?
Duvall finally gets an Oscar for this bittersweet tale of
redemption.
Plot Summary:
Mac Sledge is a washed-up, alcoholic country singer at rock
bottom, who finds himself working off a debt at a run-down Texas
motel. He builds a new life with the motel's widowed owner, Rosa
Lee, and her son, but his past soon comes calling, threatening
to unravel his newfound stability. Mac is then forced to
confront his demons and choose between the life he once had and
new life he's acquired.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Robert Duvall never ceases to amaze. At first, I could not
understand all the hubbub; he doesn't appear to be acting at all.
But slowly I began to get it. He's so good, so natural, that it appears he's not
acting. He takes on the role, and makes it his own. Here he
plays a former country singer/songwriter who has lost his way to pain
and alcohol. He finds a little salvation in a loving woman's arms and
her son's need for a father figure. But does he really deserve a
second chance in the music business? Will it bring back all the
demons? Duvall learned to play guitar and sing, solely for this
part.

Plot Summary:

Much has been written about this romantic dance movie, and with

great. It has been rumored that Swayze and Grey fought the
duration of filming. On screen, though, they make beautiful
music. I also must tip my hat to supporting actors Jerry Orbach,

Why watch this? Emma
Thompson's steely performance is truly remarkable.
Plot Summary:
Based on a true story, the film follows the author P.L. Travers
as she reluctantly travels to Los Angeles in 1961 to meet with
Walt Disney to discuss adapting her book Mary Poppins into a
film. She proves to be a demanding and uncompromising
individual, fiercely protective of her beloved story and
characters. As the Disney team attempts to bring the whimsical
world of Mary Poppins to the screen, flashbacks to Travers's
childhood reveal the personal origins and deep significance of
her creation.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This wonderful film really caught me by surprise. Hanks and
Thompson are masterful as Walt Disney and Mary Poppins' author
P. L. Travers. The film follows the persistent Mr. Disney and
his wooing of the unimpressed Ms. Travers in order to transform
her children's book into a Disney musical. There are also poignant
flashbacks to Travers' painful childhood, and the
relationship with her alcoholic father, painfully portrayed by
Colin Farrell. How Thompson did not win the Oscar for Best

"You cannot have it both
ways. A dancer who relies upon the doubtful comforts of human
love can never be a great dancer. Never." – Boris
Lermontov
Why watch this? It
really is a work of dance art that overwhelms the senses.
Plot Summary:
In South France, a driven young ballerina must choose between
her intense ambition to become a great dancer and the love of a
composer who wants her to lead a more balanced life. Her
demanding instructor, obsessed with the belief that a dancer can
have no other life than art, pushes her to an emotional breaking
point. This psychological conflict unfolds as she dances the
lead in a new ballet production called "The Red Shoes."
| |
Dad's Preview:
Often called the "Best Dance Movie Ever", this allegorical tale
follows a dance company as it performs a ballet rendition of
Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale,
The Red Shoes. At the plot's center is the price paid
for perfection, and how a determined young girl is pulled
between a demanding, possessive impresario, and her unexpected
love for a budding young composer. The brilliance here is that
both the inspiring fairy tale and the film's plot follow similar
paths, both heading toward the same fates. Equally mesmerizing
is the film's performance of the title ballet, in which the
stage is magically transformed into a fantastical dream-vision,
mirroring our heroine's complex emotions, fears and desires.
This cautionary story has a lot to offer aside from it's amazing
Technicolor presentation: incredible dance sequences,
over-the-top obsessions, and an ending that made me gasp out
loud.

Dad's Preview:
We wore out this Disney VHS tape. Our kids were mesmerized by
the cute animals and catchy tunes. It really is a magical
story of families and growing up to face responsibility. To that, you only have
to add a wise mandrill, a witty lemur and a smelly warthog. And
viola! - A great animated classic is born! Today, I still cry numerous times
during this musical romp through scenic Africa. |

Maria
Why watch this? It
is deservedly the standard by which all family musicals are
measured.
Plot Summary:
Set in Austria on the cusp of World War II, a high-spirited
young woman named Maria, considering a life as a nun, is sent to
be a governess to the seven children of the widowed and strict
Captain Georg von Trapp. Maria's love for music and kind nature
gradually bring joy and warmth back into the children's lives,
and eventually the Captain's as well.

Dad's Preview:
Set in Austria in the late 1930's, this delightful Disney
musical follows a precocious nun, Maria, who just doesn't fit in
at the abbey. Her Mother Abbess sends her to take care of a
family of seven, lorded over by their stern Austrian father, Naval Captain Georg
Von Trapp. There are musical numbers galore, and it almost goes without saying that the Austrian mountain scenery
is incredible. However, it's Julie Andrews, and her innocent, fun-loving
personality, who wins our hearts. |

"Aw, man. You made friends
with them. See, friendship is the booze they feed you.
They want
you to get drunk on feeling like you belong." - Lester Bangs
Why watch this?
It's the swan song about rock and rock in my era, you know, the
awesome 70's!
Plot Summary:
William Miller, at 15-years-old, is an aspiring journalist who
gets a dream assignment: to write a cover story for Rolling
Stone magazine. He embarks on a tour leg with the up-and-coming
rock band Stillwater, experiencing the highs and lows of life on
the road. William navigates the world of rock and roll, forming
relationships with the band members and a groupie named Penny
Lane, all while trying to maintain his journalistic integrity.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Much of the film's earnestness comes from the film's director, Cameron Crowe,
who lived a life
similar to young William Miller. He too was a Rolling Stone
writer, and his wife is none other than Nancy Wilson, guitarist
for Heart - So the man knows the rock world. Bill Crudup, as the incendiary Russell
Hammond, is unforgettable. Kate Hudson's pretty darn good, too. It has great
musical performances and a wonderful
soundtrack documenting the last great years of Rock 'n' Roll. |

Dad's Preview: I
will forever maintain that Prince, and this film, helped me to
find my sex appeal. Men I grew up around were pretty closed off
about that topic. Prince helped me find my way. He exuded sexual
charisma and confidence. Some of it was not completely
masculine, yet women still loved him. It took the
pressure off a need to appear macho, and that was more true to
who I really am. The concert scenes are unforgettable. The
soundtrack sat at No. 1 for 24 weeks! It's world-wide sales made
it one of the best-selling albums of all time, and it won the
Oscar for Best Original Song Score. |

"That was Mozart. That!
That giggling dirty-minded creature I had just seen, crawling on
the floor!" - Antonio Salieri
Why watch this?
Well, 8 Oscars is why - plus it IS a brilliant,
exceptional film.
Plot Summary:
Mozart is blessed with natural musical ability. Though a musical
genius, he is outwardly childish and crass. That is until he
thinks of his father, a stern man who was constantly
disappointed in his son. Juxtapose Mozart to Salieri, a reserved man
plays by the rules. He's true to his craft, loyal to his
employers, and faithful to God, yet always denied greatness. In
his anger, Salieri, forsakes God and becomes obsessed with
destroying the young composer.

Dad's Preview:
The theme is the prodigy versus the journeyman. This masterpiece is steeped in symbolism and
details a haunting
subtext of
one man's guilt, and another's relentless quest for retribution.
Both are tragic figures, yet very interesting as a case
study. This period piece has elaborate costumes and
sets, and it's realism rings through, as well. There may not ever be another film
quite like this.
