"Come on, let's go find
that spider. And let's find your mom to take care of that
spider.
Honey, we're in the living room. We need you to kill a
spider." - Dr. Ross Jennings
Why watch this?
Man... spiders. Everything about them is creepy - Their webs. Their eyes. Ewwww!
Plot Summary: A
dangerous spider from South America is accidentally brought to a
small town and mates with a local spider, leading to an
infestation of venomous offspring. As residents fall victim to
the deadly bites, the local doctor and a pest exterminator must
team up to find the source of the infestation and eliminate the
threat.

Dad's Preview:
This is a very good film features a group of super-aggressive,
deadly-poisonous spiders that decide they've had enough of
mankind. These pesky eight-leggers basically take over a small farm, and it's up to the
flick's
cast to defeat them. This romp wisely does not
take itself too seriously. There are some laughs, but it's also very
creepy, as we await the next attack (and
privately question how these coordinated arachnids got to be so
intelligent!). |

"No, I don't think
you'll expect this, Wilma. No, this is going to be an entirely

Henry Northrup to his
bitchy wife, Wilma
Why watch this? It's
scary, campy and a whole lot of creepy fun.
Plot Summary: This
horror anthology film consists of five macabre tales brought to
life in the style of an
EC Comics horror comic books of the 1950's. The stories
feature vengeful zombies, strange plant mutations, a man who
faces a dreadful punishment for his actions, a dangerous
creature locked in a crate, and a man obsessed with cleanliness
who faces a horrific infestation. These unsettling tales are
presented through a series of vignettes tied together by framing
segments featuring a young boy and a comic book.

Dad's Preview:
This spooky film anthology hits some funny notes, but overall -
it will scare the heck out of you. An ensemble cast shines in
five short film stories: Father's Day, The Lonesome
Death of Jordy Verrill, Something to Tide You Over,
They're Creeping Up on You, and (my favorite) The
Crate. Stephen King, the renown horror novelist, wrote the
screenplay. |

begs, never feed him after midnight."
- Chinese Boy
Why watch this? I
re-watched this recently, and was pleasantly reminded now much I
love these nasty, deadly and devious little creatures.
Plot Summary:
A loving father finds a unique gift to surprise his responsible
teenage son, who happens to have a huge crush a girl he works
with at the bank. The rich, evil town spinster wants his dog so
she can put it down. The father's gift is a small, living
teddy-bearish thing that coos and beeps and even sings little
tunes. They call it Gizmo, and it's A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E. But later
that night, it accidentally gets wet (see quote above), and
starts to multiply. Gizmo's "offspring" aren't quite as nice.
Then the boy accidentally feeds them after midnight...

Dad's Review:
This film starts just like a cutsie film about a puppy for
Christmas. Then this quaint
little holiday movie turns into an action horror flick, as the
gremlins take over the town! It was produced by Stephen
Spielberg and wonderfully directed by Joe Dante, so its quality
is top-notch. The devilish conduct of the rampaging mob of spiny
mini-monsters is very entertaining, even if it ruins Christmas
Day for the local folks. |

"One thing about living in
Santa Carla I never could stomach; all the damn vampires."
Grandpa
Why watch this? This
is the quintessential 80's film about
hair-band vampires.
Plot Summary:
Following a recent divorce, a mother and her two teenage sons,
Michael and Sam, move to the coastal town of Santa Carla,
California to live with her eccentric father. While Michael
becomes involved with a mysterious gang and begins exhibiting
strange behavior, Sam befriends two local brothers who believe
the town is infested with vampires. Fearing for his brother's
transformation, Sam and his new friends must find a way to
combat the growing supernatural threat.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is one of the better modern-day vampire films. Though it
reeks of the '80's stylistically, the acting and action is very
entertaining. I particularly loved the performance by Bernard
Hughes as Grandpa - a guy just taking things in stride. It is
well-done, successfully skating the fine line between horror
and humor, as the kind-hearted Star desperately tries to save
Michael from sharing her same nocturnal fate. |

"We're

Why watch this?
Just sit back, suspend belief, and have a blast with these nasty
little alien creatures.
Plot Summary: A
group of small, carnivorous alien creatures, called Crites,
escape from prison and crash-land near a Kansas farmhouse. They
begin terrorizing the family living there, eating everything in
sight. Two shape-shifting bounty hunters arrive on Earth, hot on
the trail of the fuzzy little creatures. This all leads to a
chaotic battle between the aliens, the family, and the bounty
hunters.

Dad's Preview:
This is a rare example where the lower-budgeted "idea rip-off"
film is actually better than the original - and I am comparing this film
to
Gremlins
(1894).
Any way you slice this movie concept, it should not work - its
premise is absurd. But I
am here to tell you, it does work! A ship full of tiny, fang-mouthed
creatures from space crash land on earth and terrorize a small
family farm.
They roll along the ground then shoot their prey with poison darts! Then
they eat you. Space bounty hunters, who just happen to be
shape-shifters, are in pursuit. Please stay with me
here. This excels because it hits that "sweet spot" blend of sci-fi comedy and horror! |

Deacon
Why watch this?
Taika
Waititi is on a roll. His off-kilter films are so creative, as is
this one.
Plot Summary: Three
vampires, Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav, navigate the
difficulties of modern life in New Zealand. A documentary crew
films their daily lives, which include paying bills, completing
chores, and interacting with other supernatural beings and the
human world. The vampires' lives change when a human familiar is
turned into a vampire, and they must adjust to a new member.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This off-the-wall vampire comedy bit me right from the
start. True, the four main characters are blood-sucking fiends,
but they're also just roommates, sharing a flat in Te Aro, New
Zealand. They endure many of the same issues all co-habitants
have: a messy kitchen, noisy guests, blood all over the couch,
dead bodies lying around. It's hilarious. Each vampire lived in
a different time in history, which leads to constant cultural bickering.
My fav is the pale Nosferatu, who mostly stays in his creepy basement
coffin. |

"What kind of alien, out of all the
places in the whole wide world, would invade some shitty council estate in south
London?"
- Dimples
Why watch this?
It's one of the best low-budget alien invasion films in years.
Plot Summary: A
South London gang and the nurse they just mugged must
reluctantly team up to survive when their council estate is
invaded by hostile extraterrestrials. What starts as a simple
robbery is interrupted by an object falling from the sky,
forcing the group to face an intergalactic threat with
improvised weapons. Throughout the night, they defend their turf
against predatory, fanged creatures as they learn to put aside
their differences for the sake of survival.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is the second effort from young British director Joe
Cornish and it delivers with confidence. Though centering on a
small group of unruly teenagers, it feels polished and bigger
than it is. There's a sci-fi freshness I have not felt since
Tremors
(1990), and that is saying a lot. It has action,
social-commentary, character-development and some great creature
effects. The strong performance by John Boyega (pre-Star Wars)
should be noted. This delightful movie, combining alien
invasion, horror and humor, is referred to as a genre-mashup.
It also considered a new cult classic. |

Plot Summary:

woods, where he unwittingly unleashes flesh-possessing demons
after playing a recorded incantation from an ancient book. As
the demonic forces terrorize him and a new group of arrivals,
Ash is forced into a frantic, chaotic battle for survival that

shotgun, he must fight through the night to survive the demonic
onslaught and escape the cabin's terrifying grasp.

Dad's Preview:
This sequel to
Evil
Dead (1981)
serves up a more sophisticated plate
over-brimming with the spoils of a better budget and the
genius of director Sam Raimi. Yet, it somehow manages to
retain the wonderful campiness of a low-budget horror
film. Amid buckets of bloody F/X, thrives the spastic
Bruce Campbell, who carries the film. He lobs snarky
one-liners as well as he does a red splattered axe. You
will shriek, cover your eyes, then laugh out loud
throughout. As Ash succinctly puts it... "Groovy." This
also paved the way for the excellent third film,

Plot Summary: A
timid, rule-following survivor named Columbus navigates a
post-apocalyptic America overrun by zombies, attempting to reach
his hometown in Ohio. Along the way, he teams up with a
gun-toting, Twinkie-obsessed survivor named Tallahassee and two
crafty sisters, Wichita and Little Rock. Together, this unlikely
quartet embarks on a dangerous, darkly comedic road trip across
the country.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This deliciously witty horror comedy takes on the zombie
genre and ends up being one hell of a funny flick. It
never takes itself too serious. With all the carnage
around them, we somehow sense that our four protagonists
will find a way to come out on alive and intact. There
is a very unexpected cameo from a certain SNL alumni -
you will laugh out loud in that moment. It flow wells at
a pleasant pace. I also enjoyed the film's budding
relationship between Eisenberg and Stone, lovingly set
among bloody corpses and undead screams. So sweet. |

"So once again, thank

Chef Slowik
Why watch this?
This will not be what you expect, but it's one clever film
about food and its obsessions.
Plot Summary:
A young couple travel to a remote island to dine at an exclusive
and very expensive restaurant, Hawthorne. Run by a celebrity
chef, the restaurant boasts a lavish tasting menu promising a
unique culinary experience. However, as the evening progresses,
the guests realize the chef has some shocking surprises planned
that go far beyond haute cuisine.
| |
Dad's Preview:
The film's introduction is similar to an Agatha Christie
novel, which begs the viewer to figure out the purpose of
assembling this cast of characters. As the evening enfolds, we
learn that each diner is somewhat unlikable, and the Chef has
things specifically designed to expose their detestable natures.
Poor Margot, who is there only by chance, is stuck in the middle. This film introduced me to Anya Taylor-Joy,
as Margo, and, wow, what an actress. She stands
toe-to-toe with veteran actor Ralph Fiennes, and never flinches. This mind field of
revenge and obsessions will shock you, thrill you, and
completely entertain you, each course more delicious than the
last. |

Mortimer Brewster
Why watch this?
An eerie comedy (today we'd call it a "black comedy") from the great Frank Capra.
Plot Summary: A
drama critic, Mortimer Brewster, discovers a shocking secret
about his beloved, eccentric aunts. On his wedding day, he must
navigate this alarming discovery while also dealing with his
other peculiar family members, including a brother who thinks
he's Teddy Roosevelt. Mortimer tries to protect his new wife
from the unsettling truth while figuring out how to handle his
family's unusual circumstances.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Cary Grant again shines in this odd little Capra comedy. He portrays a normal
man who lives with his two sweet old aunts. There is, however, one small
detail: they are murdering their suitors. The whole movie
revolves around this revelation. So, how do you go about hiding
the bodies? It's macabre, but strangely hilarious, as the aunts
continually court men seeking their fortune, then poison them. The plot is unique
and crazy enough to help it stand out above most of the screwball
comedies of that period. |

Why watch this? Some
films grab you from the start. This role-flipping
dark comedy is a riot!
Plot Summary:
Good-natured hillbillies Tucker and Dale are on vacation at
their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are mistaken for
murderers by a group of really dumb preppy college students. A
series of comical and tragic misunderstandings escalate as the
students accidentally cause their own demise. Tucker and Dale
struggle to prove their innocence while simultaneously trying to
protect the lone surviving student.

Dad's Preview:
I have reached my limit of "teens go into the forest and are
murdered one by one" films. But I regress... This film flips
that horror sub-genre on its head and delivers one of the best dark
comedies you'll find. Tucker and Dale are just sweetly ignorant
rednecks trying to get by in this crazy world. A group of
incredibly stupid teens convince themselves
that Tucker and Dale are, you guessed it, serial killers. This
hidden gem is grisly at times,
but in a funny way (yes, I just said that). Of course, there is a wood chipper involved.

This was a great collaboration between macabre director Tim Burton and
comedian Michael Keaton. The bold move here was to basically turn Keaton loose,
capitalizing on his unique style of comedic genius. This

giving him a hunger for raw meat. As Grant's body becomes a

abandon his life-creating experiments. However, he is pressured
by his eccentric mentor, Dr. Pretorius, and threatened by his
creation, the Monster, into constructing a female companion for
the Monster. Frankenstein eventually agrees and embarks on the

Dad's Preview:
With the original film,
director James Whale gave us a monster unlike any other. With
the sequel, he offers a better blend of horror and cynical
humor. The result is one of the best Universal monster
productions ever made. It's scary, funny, outrageous, and
exciting. It also appealed to a much larger audience. Karloff
returns as the monster, and the wonderful Elsa Manchester makes
her brief appearance as his wide-eyed, terrified bride. |

"On the moors, we were
attacked by a lycanthrope, a werewolf. I was murdered, an unnatural
death,
and now I walk the earth in limbo until the werewolf's curse is
lifted. Jack
Why watch this?
The first transformation scene is worth the price of admission.

Two American backpackers, David and Jack, are attacked by a
creature on the English moors. One is killed, while the
survivor, recovering in London, experiences terrifying
nightmares and hallucinations. Soon, he discovers the horrifying
truth about his attack and faces the potential of his own

Dad's Preview:
This cinema classic is a different kind of horror movie. It has
this almost tongue-in-cheek humor to it. This serves to relax the
audience, makes them feel safe... then it literally bites your
arm off! However, it is more than that, too. It has great
performances and a brilliant soundtrack. The star of the film is Rick Baker's incredible
makeup effects (which won an Academy Award). David's first
transformation is a horrifying work of cinematic art. |

"Run for it? Running is not
a plan. Running is what you do when a plan fails!" - Earl
Why watch this?
Gigantic, underground, man-eating worms! That's a hard YES for me.
Plot Summary: Set in
the remote desert town of Perfection, Nevada, two handymen, Val
and Earl, decide to leave their dull lives. Before they can
depart, strange tremors and a series of mysterious deaths
suggest a dangerous threat lurks beneath the surface. Along with
other residents, including a seismologist and a survivalist
couple, they must fight to survive against unseen, giant
creatures that hunt by sensing vibrations.

Dad's Preview:
I cannot say enough about Kevin Bacon. In
Animal House
(1978) I hated him as a snobby frat boy. He has since earned
my respect. He
certainly is a hard-working actor. This monster film hits the right blend of horror/gore, action and comedy from start to finish.
Scientifically it's preposterous, so don't waste your time
trying to make it make sense. Just go with it. Fred Ward also
shines as
Bacon's hillbilly sidekick, Earl. The two become unlikely
protectors as giant worms threaten a small, desert hamlet.
Despite the topic, the film is well-done and very fun to watch. |

"Are you saying that I put
an abnormal brain into a seven and a half foot long, fifty-four
inch wide GORILLA? IS THAT WHAT YOU'RE TELLING ME?" - Dr.
Frederick Frankenstein
Why watch this?
It's perhaps now more of a classic than the films it spoofs!
Plot Summary:
Frederick Frankenstein, grandson of the infamous Victor
Frankenstein, is a respected neurosurgeon who tries to distance
himself from his family's eccentric legacy. He inherits his
ancestor's Transylvanian castle and, after discovering his
grandfather's scientific journals, becomes intrigued by the
potential of reanimating the dead. Aided by his hunchbacked
assistant Igor and a lab assistant named Inga, Frederick
attempts to bring a corpse to life, inadvertently creating a
monster.

Dad's Preview:
This comedy, along with
Blazing Saddles
(1974), was made at the
height of director Mel Brooks' popularity. It goofs on the classic
Universal Studios Frankenstein movies. Presented aptly in black and
white, Brooks really captures the mood of those old classic horror
films. Much
of this film's success can be attributed to its leading cast. There
is a chemistry, and you can tell they were having a
good time, especially the impish, bug-eyed Marty Feldman - that
guy was a notorious on-set prankster, and he has always made me laugh. |
