Mina Harker to Tom Sawyer's flirty advances
Why watch this? Any
chance to see our greatest literary heroes together is a good
thing.
Plot Summary:
In an alternate 1899, a shadowy figure known as the Fantom, aka
"M", orchestrates events to ignite a world war. British
Intelligence recruits adventurer Allan Quatermain to assemble a
team of legendary characters including Captain Nemo, Mina Harker,
and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. This extraordinary League must
unite their unique abilities to stop the Fantom's destructive
plans and save the world.

Dad's Preview: Yes, it's far-fetched. Yes, vehicles do things in small spaces
that defy physics. But, well, it is a fantasy film, so belief has
to be suspended at least partially. You will enjoy it a lot more
if you fully suspend it. A team of famous fictional
literary characters are brought together to stop a mysterious
evil bent one world destruction. Based on Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's comic book series,
it's almost non-stop action traversing the world and its oceans.
There are some great moments, and I really enjoyed Sir Sean Connery's performance (though he
later confessed his disdain for the film). Peta Wilson really glimmers as the
sexy vampire Mina Harker. |

Plot Summary:
This pre-historic tale focuses on Tumak, a caveman banished from
his violent Rock tribe after a confrontation with his father,

dinosaurs, he eventually encounters Loana, a member of the more
civilized and gentle Shell tribe. Despite initial cultural
clashes, their connection sparks a romance that challenges the
established traditions of both tribes.

Dad's Preview:
This is another of the great Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion
animation classics. We are catapulted back in time, when humans
were savage and they shared the world with gigantic creatures.
Yea, I know that's not how it really happened, but work with me
here! It's epic and generally a wild ride through a land of
explosions, lava flows, and creatures of every kind constantly
attacking the tribes of prehistoric, scantily-clad humans...
and one of them happened to be my boyhood crush, Raquel
Welch. |

Plot Summary: Jack
Campbell is a wealthy, single Wall Street executive who
seemingly has it all. However, on Christmas Eve, he wakes up in
an alternate reality where he's a married man with children,
living a more modest suburban life in New Jersey with the
girlfriend he let go 13 years prior. This unexpected
transformation forces him to confront his priorities and examine

How would your life change if you made one different decision?

finds himself separated from his home and loved ones after a
tumultuous event. Lost and facing many dangers, Arlo must
overcome his fears and learn to survive in the wild. Along his

challenging landscape in a quest to reunite Arlo with his
family.

Dad's Preview:
"OK, here comes another overly-sentimental kids movie," I
thought. Of course, I was dead wrong. This story follows a young
Apatosaurus (think Brontosaurus), Arlo, who stumbles upon a feral human boy.
They soon become pals. A flash flood suddenly hits! Arlo and
the boy are swept away. Both are forced to
grow up as they trek through a world unknown to them, encountering new friends and
dangers. My favorite segment is their encounter with cattle-herding T-Rexes. This cute
film will warm your little Jurassic-heart. |

Plot Summary: The
modern U.S. aircraft carrier USS Nimitz encounters a mysterious
storm and is transported back in time to December 6, 1941, the
day before the attack on Pearl Harbor. The crew faces a profound
moral and ethical dilemma about whether to intervene in history
and potentially prevent the attack using their superior
technology.

Dad's Preview:
The premise is certainly a "What If" scenario. The fun is to
simply go with it and enjoy the ride. In 1980, the aircraft
carrier USS Nimitz is sucked through a time-portal vortex. The immediate question is whether or not to engage the
enemy with the advanced technology. Will it change history? This
well-done, thrilling, creative film takes us on a wonderful
time-jumping adventure, that packs a punch, and has a memorable
ending. |

Plot Summary:
Larry Burrows is an ordinary man who, on his 35th birthday,

high school baseball game. Larry finds himself in an alternate

Dad's Preview:
How would your life have changed had you hit the

"There's so much more

you too, and you can harness all that. You have a power that no

Why watch this? This
new direction takes us back to the X-Men origin story with a new
cast.
Plot Summary: During
the Cold War in the 1960s, Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr,
two young mutants with extraordinary powers, meet and form a
close bond as they work to find and recruit other individuals
like them. Aided by the CIA, they assemble a team to confront a
powerful mutant villain who threatens to trigger a nuclear war
between the US and the Soviet Union.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This excellent super-hero origin movie focuses a lot of time on
the meeting of Erik Lehnsherr (aka Magneto), Charles Xavier (aka
Professor X) and Raven (aka Mystique). Erik seeks revenge
on the man, Sebastian Shaw, who killed his mother in Auschwitz.
Charles attends the University of Oxford, and his able to
convince the CIA to fund Division X, a secret division to work
with mutants. The new cast is excellent, and there are admirable
new additions. The plot is complex, yet easy to follow, and it
is a worthy prequel in the X-Men film series. |

"When dealing with

Why watch this?
Benevolent aliens reach Earth, and humans are never gracious hosts.
Plot Summary:
After aliens arrive on Earth seeking refuge, they are placed in
a segregated internment camp near Johannesburg, South Africa,
known as District 9. A government bureaucrat, tasked with
relocating the aliens, is exposed to an alien substance that
begins to transform his DNA. This leads to him being hunted by
his own government and seeking refuge within District 9, where
he learns more about the aliens and their treatment.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This film features illegal aliens, that are real aliens! These
otherworldly creatures are nicknamed "prawns". There are obvious political parallels to
real-life events in South Africa, a basically racism in general.
Somehow it's easier when the "they" are not humanoids. This CGI-infused sci-fi film
works on so many levels: namely believable hard science effects
and a thought-provoking storyline. |

"Anybody accidentally
kills anybody in a fight, they go to jail. It's called
manslaughter. I think all that lethal weapon horseshit is just
an excuse so you dancers never have to get in a real fight." -
Cliff Booth to actor, Bruce Lee
Why watch this?
Tarantino's 9th film is a what-if tale of 1960's Hollywood and
gap between haves and wanna-haves.
Plot Summary:
Set in 1969 Hollywood, we follow Western TV star, Rick Dalton,
and his stuntman, Cliff Booth. Rick's still acting, but he's
burnt out and drinking hard. His stuntman Cliff also serves as
his driver and is basically Rick's best friend. Rick also lives
next door to director Roman Polanski and his new wife, the
beautiful Sharon Tate. Where the plot, over two hours, takes the
audience is quite an event-filled, nostalgic trip. This film
centers on the changing landscape of old Hollywood and its
intersection with a very disenchanted hippie population. Its
aging stars are being devalued, just like the dried paint on
nearby weathered billboards. Yet, these two tired journeymen,
because of their friendship, just might make it through the meat
grinder.
| |
Dad's Preview:
In his homage to TV shows and B-movies of the '60's, Tarantino
creatively blends fictional characters and real-life people to
craft a tale that sorta hijacks one of the most compelling
true crime stories of that time, the Charles Manson Murders. The
film was
nominated for eight
Academy Awards, with Pitt finally nabbing an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. |

Why watch this? This
time travel film is a brilliant chance to get the old and new
casts together one time.
Plot Summary: In a
bleak future where mutants face extinction from relentless
Sentinel robots, the X-Men devise a plan to send Wolverine back
in time. His mission is to prevent a pivotal event in 1973 that
sparks the Sentinel program and a war that decimates both
mutants and the humans who help them. To succeed, Wolverine must
unite the younger Professor X and Magneto, convince Raven Darkhölme (aka
the shape-shifting Mystique) to alter her actions, and
ultimately change the course of history to secure a future where
mutants and humans can coexist.

Dad's Preview:
The massive
strength of this film is the combination of the original X-Men
line-up and their younger counterparts. It's fun and really

Why watch this? ...
it's World War III, and this time on American soil. It could happen.
Plot Summary:
In an alternate 1980s, the United States is invaded by the
Soviet Union and its allies. When a small Colorado town is
occupied, a group of high school students escapes to the
mountains. They form a guerrilla resistance force called the
Wolverines, fighting back against the invading forces to defend

| |
Dad's Preview:
Not that I really want to think this could happen, but I was
immediately drawn to the premise of this film. The USA is
attacked by Russian and Cuban forces, as World War III kicks
off. The film follows a small group of teenagers who hide out in
the Colorado mountains, then begin to wage guerilla warfare
against the invaders. The story and
characters are fully developed as is the heart-rendering climax.
The Brat Pack is fully represented by Swayze, Howell,
Thompson and Sheen, however I thought the best performance was
delivered by the commanding Powers Boothe. |

Plot Summary:
Princess Diana, raised on the hidden island of Themyscira,

conflict consuming the outside world. Convinced she can stop the
war and believing the god Ares is responsible, Diana leaves her

"There's a strong streak of

Why watch this?
It's like Superman walked out of a comic book and onto the screen.
Plot Summary:
Born on the doomed planet Krypton, infant Kal-El is sent to
Earth by his scientist father, Jor-El, and is discovered and
raised by the kind Kents. As an adult, Clark Kent moves to
Metropolis, taking a job as a reporter while secretly using his
superhuman abilities to fight crime as Superman. This brings him
into conflict with criminal mastermind Lex Luthor, who hatches a
scheme that threatens the lives of many and challenges the
burgeoning hero.

Dad's Preview:

It's success created a new market for this type of movie. The special effects budget was sizable and it shows.
Reeves literally is

history. The film is
light and cheeky, even innocent, which audiences loved
at that time. To this day, it remains one of my super-hero favorites.

Why watch this?
Snyder films are so stylistically unique, and this one is

Plot Summary: Set in

with the murder of a former costumed hero known as The Comedian.
This event prompts the vigilante Rorschach, who is still
actively fighting crime, to investigate a potential conspiracy
targeting other former superheroes. As Rorschach reconnects with
his former masked allies, they uncover a much larger and darker
plot that could have catastrophic consequences.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Zack Snyder developed this film from the uber-successful comic graphic
novel by the brilliant
Alan Moore. Some fans were very critical of the film's
adaptation, however it does work. There are great effects, interesting
heroes and a
rock solid, complex plot. I particularly love J. E. Haley's portrayal
of the dark, disturbed Rorschach, an anti-hero, fighting to
maintain his sanity in a violent world.
This super-hero saga is not for kids. Rather, it's a very
gritty film, where the plot is allowed to take us
into new, mature and interesting directions. |

star accused of murder. As the detective investigates, he

Toontown, the animated metropolis where toons reside.

Dad's Preview:
I am always a fan of something new and inventive, even if the
effort sometimes falls short. This film is an example
where expectations were exceeded. Director Zemeckis creates a 1950s-ish world
where humans and cartoons co-exist, and it's
business-as-usual. This is an easy film to love. It has all
our favorite cartoon characters (Mickey, Donald, Daffy, Porky,

wonderful
ending... and let's not forget naughtily-drawn bombshell, Jessica Rabbit. |

As a fan of
The Time Machine (1960), this takes things one more horrifying step.
Plot Summary:
English writer H.G. Wells, having invented a functional time

own creation. Upon arriving in a future he did not anticipate,
Wells encounters a woman named Amy Robbins and enlists her help

I love the concept of time-travel, so this film caught my eye. In
this creative spin, H.G. Wells' fictional machine is hijacked by none

responsible. This hidden
treasure is intelligent and packed with suspense. Kudos to great
performances by the three leads. This compelling crime-drama is a must-see for sci-fi

Teen idol Kurt
Russell successfully changed his "Disney nice guy" image

and Deep Dive of Forrest Gump
"Stupid is as stupid
does." - Forrest Gump
Why watch this?
There is something to be said for seeing a story through the
eyes of the unsophisticated.
Plot Summary:
This epic story follows the incredible and often serendipitous
life of a kind-hearted but slow-witted man from Alabama. He
recounts his experiences, which intertwine with significant
historical events and figures of the 20th century, to strangers
at a bus stop. Throughout his extraordinary journey, his only
constant desire is to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart,
Jenny.

Dad's Preview:
This film is America. We get everything... all its
shimmer and warts, it's beauty and imperfections. Be it peaceful
Alabama cypress trees, napalm exploding in Vietnam, a quiet
desert highway at sunset, a devastating storm at sea. We follow
the life events of childlike Forrest Gump. On him we pin our hopes
and dreams. This simple man shows us so much about ourselves.
Hanks makes another wise role choice. It won 5 Oscars including
Best Picture, Director and Actor. |

Marty McFly, after lighting up the prom with some guitar licks
by
Eddie Van Halen
Why watch this?
When Marty meets his parents, back in the 1950's, the fun really
begins.
Plot Summary: Marty
McFly is a teenager who travels back to 1955 using a time
machine built by his friend, the eccentric scientist Doc Brown.
He accidentally prevents his parents from meeting and falling in
love, putting his own future existence at risk. Marty must
ensure his parents get together and find a way to return to his
own time.

Dad's Preview:
This now iconic film's success hinged on properly casting the lead.
Wisely, director Zemeckis replaced Eric Stoltz with quick-witted
Michael J. Fox from TV's
Family Ties. The rest is film
history. It's a time-jumping adventure that keeps the viewers guessing
as altering actions in the past might impact the
future. Think about it - what would you change if you could travel back in time to
meet your parents in high school? No way that doesn't get a little weird. |

Review and Deep Dive of It's a Wonderful Life
"Strange isn't it? Each
man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he
leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?" - Clarence the angel
Why watch this? ...
You're kidding, right? This holiday classic is so much more than
that.
Plot Summary:
This holiday classic follows George Bailey, a man who has always
put the needs of his small town and its residents before his own
ambitions. Through a series of selfless acts, he inadvertently
creates a life that, despite its challenges, has a profound
impact on those around him. When faced with a crisis that pushes
him to his breaking point, an unexpected intervention shows him
the true value of his existence and the indelible mark he has
made on his community.

Dad's Preview:
This really is a wonderful film about a humble man named
George Bailey. The world can be cruel to folks who live
right and try to always do good things. George, in his
despair, feels he has failed everyone, his father, his
wife, his town, and most importantly, his dreams. On a
snowy night, he prays for help. His answer: a visit from
his guardian angel, the kind Clarence Odbody, who grants
George his wish to see what life would be like if "I'd
never been born". I treasure this Capra film with all my
soul. It's message is like life's manna. |

and Deep Dive of Planet of the
Apes
"Man is a nuisance. He
eats up his food supply in the forest, then migrates to our
green belts and
ravages our crops. The sooner he is
exterminated, the better." – Doctor Zaius
Why watch this? ...
it's compelling through-out, but the last scene makes it a
legend.
Plot Summary:
An astronaut crew crash-lands on a mysterious planet in the
distant future, where they discover a highly evolved society of
apes has become the dominant species, enslaving primitive
humans. As the lone surviving spaceman navigates this new world
and seeks to prove his intelligence to his captors, he uncovers
the shocking truth about the planet's identity and past.

Dad's Preview:
This is the first science fiction film I remember watching, and
what a primer! It was certainly ahead of its time. I was so intrigued by the role reversal
between ape and man. It's humbling to witness a planet where man
is the lowest animal - being hunted, killed, enslaved and even
domesticated. The film's extensive make-up and eerie,
avant-garde soundtrack were nominated for Oscars. Like many of writer Rod Serling's
Twilight Zone episodes, this masterwork of his is a real think-piece about humanity
and our own pre-conceived, hubris-laden ideals. |
