"Why do fireflies have
to die so soon?" - Setsuko
Why watch this? War
is hell on soldiers, but it's also hell on the civilians that
live beneath falling bombs.
Plot Summary: During
the final months of World War II in Japan, teenage Seita and his
young sister Setsuko are orphaned after an American firebombing
destroys their home and separates them from their parents. The
two children must rely completely on one another for survival,
struggling to find food and shelter in the war-torn countryside
after a falling out with their unsympathetic aunt. Their story
is a heartbreaking tale of the devastating impact of war on
innocent civilians and the profound strength of their sibling
bond amidst unimaginable hardship.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This visceral, emotional film depicts the cost war takes on
civilians. It is based on a semi-autobiographical short story
written by Akiyuki Nosaka, who himself survived during and after
the incendiary bombings of Kobe, Japan. The people left to fend
for themselves amid the rubble of their world had it bad enough.
Nosaka had the added responsibility of caring for his little
sister, Setsuko. Though an animated feature, their journey is
anything but childish or funny. It heart-shattering, as they
fight to find food and stay alive. This is about incredibly
courage and horrible tragedy. Many consider this to be one of
the greatest animated films ever made. For me, it is a necessary
anti-war film that drives home the point: war simply kills
people. Period. |

"They're exterminating
us. It won't take them long. We are 60 thousand left, out of
half a million. Mostly young people." -
Majorek
Why watch this? This
is a superb telling of survival within Poland during WWII.
Plot Summary:
Based on the autobiography of Władysław Szpilman, the film
follows a renowned Polish-Jewish classical pianist struggling to
survive as the Nazis occupy Warsaw and enforce brutal
persecution. After being separated from his family during the
liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto, he endures years of starvation
and hiding, relying on the help of non-Jewish allies and the
Polish resistance. Amidst the destruction of the city, he finds
a unlikely glimmer of hope through the compassion of a
music-loving German officer.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Władysław Szpilman's story, as captured in his 1946
autobiographical book of the same name, is incredible. His
survival, during perhaps the most deadly time and place in the
world for his Jewish race, seems to be a combination of luck,
the help of many Poles who knew of his piano talents, and
perhaps even a little divine intervention. This emotional film,
of life and death in the Warsaw ghetto, benefits from an amazing
screenplay, Adrian Brody's portrayal of the lead character (his
eyes exude sadness) and steady direction from Roman Polanski,
himself a Holocaust survivor. I will be honest, there are
moments here that are hard to take. You will be emotionally
overwhelmed at the madness and cruelty of the Nazis. That said
it is certainly worth every second of your time, if for no other
reason, to remember. |

"Must we work so well?

Major Clipton
Why watch this?
This epic WWII film shows the madness war can infect men held in
brutal war camps.
Plot Summary:
British prisoners of war are forced to build a railway bridge in
Burma for their Japanese captors during World War II. A battle
of wills emerges between the British Colonel Nicholson and the
Japanese commander Colonel Saito over the treatment of officers.
An allied mission aims to destroy the bridge, creating a
conflict between the objective of the mission and Colonel's
drive to finish the bridge.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This film is a case study on how stubborn the English can be.
The British Colonel, feeling the bridge project's will boost the
men's spirits, is determined to complete it. Everybody else
wants to sabotage and destroy the bridge because it helps the
Japanese war effort. The viewer must bounce back and forth with where
loyalties lie. This film won seven Oscars including Best

Why watch this? The
Vietnam war damaged its survivors. Here, we see the depth of that
devastation.
Plot Summary: This
epic war drama explores the devastating impact of the Vietnam
War on a close-knit group of friends from a small, working-class
Pennsylvania mining town. It follows three steelworker buddies
who volunteer for military service and face harrowing
experiences, forever altering their lives and testing the bonds

Vietnam. Some adjust, but some can't - the war still rages

"Five months in Vietnam and
my best friend is a V.C.! This will not look good on a résumé!"
- Adrian Cronauer
Why watch this?
Robin Williams steals the show, and I think that was the
idea.
Plot Summary:
Adrian Cronauer, an Armed Forces Radio Service DJ, is assigned
to Saigon during the Vietnam War in 1965. His irreverent style
and choice of music make him incredibly popular with the troops,
but they infuriate his stuffy superiors. The film explores the
contrast between Cronauer's attempts to bring levity and rock
and roll to the soldiers, and the growing realities and
complexities of the war surrounding them.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Robin Williams, early in his career, was a quick-witted, almost manic,
comedian. Here, he is an Army DJ in Vietnam, spinning tunes, and
witty humor, for the troops. Could the film-makers harness his
high energy, yet control it enough, to succeed on film? This
vehicle let him be spontaneous, and funny, yet also exposed
us to the real actor behind the mayhem. His complicated
relationship with two Vietnamese siblings gives the film a real
beating heart. |

1993 Mogadishu Raid.
Plot Summary: In
1993, a group of elite U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force
operators are sent into Mogadishu, Somalia, on a mission to
capture key lieutenants of a powerful warlord. However, the
operation quickly escalates into a brutal and prolonged
firefight when two Black Hawk helicopters are shot down. The
stranded American soldiers must fight their way through hostile
territory in a desperate struggle to survive and rescue their
comrades.
| |
Dad's Preview:
I remember seeing the news footage of a US helicopter pilot's
body being
dragged through the streets of Mogadishu. This film replays the confusion
of that day as two U.S. helicopters
were shot down in the middle of an African civil war. We witness the
bravery of the U.S. soldiers who went in to extract the crash
victims. Courageous as that was, the brutal reality is that a terrible
toll was taken on the Somali militia and citizens, as well. |

Why watch this? ...
it's a superb war film set in the trenches of the first World War.
Plot Summary:
Colonel Dax, a French officer in World War I, is ordered by his
superiors to lead his men in a suicidal assault on a German
position known as the "Ant Hill". The mission ends in disaster
and the French General, in an effort to deflect blame from
himself, demands that three soldiers be court-martialed and
executed for cowardice. Dax, a former lawyer, volunteers to
defend his men against the blatant injustice of the proceedings.

Dad's Preview:
The significance of Kirk Douglas on American cinema cannot be
overstated. Where his contemporaries (Wayne, Stewart, Peck, or
Tracy) filled roles as the dependable hero, Douglas often played the
more complex man. He was usually conflicted, sullen, explosive,
difficult to read. He was an acting force. In this
film he plays a French commander who refuses to send his men on
a suicide attack and faces trial by court-martial. This powerful anti-war
effort is engrossing, mostly attributed to Douglas' performance. |

Plot Summary:
This historical epic depicts the pivotal three-day

Confederate armies. It showcases the strategic
movements, fierce fighting at crucial locations like
Little Round Top, and the climactic Confederate charge

Dad's Preview:
This is a very detailed historical epic that recreates one of the
most pivotal moments in American
history. The viewer is asked to take in all the
pieces that had to come together for this battle to occur. It is all
there: Devil's Den, Little Roundtop, Pickett's charge. I

performance shines as Col. Chamberlain, who led the 20th

"He tells you, 'Go out and

Why watch this?
WWI was a brutal, horrible war. This shows that nobody wins.
Plot Summary:
Inspired by patriotic fervor, a group of young German schoolboys
enlists in the army at the outbreak of World War I. They soon
find their romantic notions of war shattered by the harsh
realities of trench warfare, witnessing death and
disillusionment firsthand. The film follows their experiences on
the Western Front, emphasizing the dehumanizing effects and
futility of the conflict.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This is a perfect example of early, almost
amateurish, film-making that enhances the film's impact. Made in
1929, a mere 14-years after WWI, the film has a distinctive
authenticity regarding this era in history. It is an
unapologetic anti-war film. Back then, it was not popular to
be anti-war, especially with Hitler gearing up in Europe for what
would become the second World War. Here our
protagonist is a German soldier who finds out that real war is
not what he expected - the war is over-glamorized at home;
leadership is
incompetent; the only bond a soldier has is with his fellow soldiers.
In sum, war is futile. You will forever remember the scene
in the bomb crater with the dead Russian soldier. |

Why watch this?
This is the role George C. Scott was destined to play.
Plot Summary:
This war film chronicles the World War II career of the
controversial American General George S. Patton, beginning with
his command in North Africa after a devastating defeat. The film
follows his leadership across key campaigns, including the
Allied invasion of Sicily and the Battle of the Bulge.
Throughout, it explores his complex personality, highlighting
both his brilliant military strategy and his outspoken nature
and difficult relationships with superiors and subordinates.
| |
Dad's Preview:
In real life, Patton was larger than life. Here is a spanning epic
that manages to paint an intimate portrait of this complicated,
often controversial, military leader. He inspired his men, yet was brutally hard on
them. He was such a prima donna that he was often at odds with
his superiors. Regardless, he was a military genius who was
instrumental in our Allied forces defeating the Nazis in WWII. |

Kambei Shimada
Why watch this? This

bandits.
Plot Summary:
In feudal Japan, desperate villagers facing repeated bandit
raids decide to hire samurai for protection. They find Kambei,
an aging but skilled samurai, who reluctantly agrees and
recruits six other masterless warriors to defend the village.
The seven samurai train the villagers in defense tactics and
prepare for the bandits' inevitable return.
| |
Dad's Preview:
Kurosawa's work would influence many films, including Leone's
Spaghetti Westerns and
The Magnificent Seven
(1970). A
small group of samurai warriors agree to
protect a farmer village from forty marauding bandits. Each
samurai's personality is unique, the most charismatic being Kikuchiyo, a fiery
fighter with a hidden past. The group is led by
the steady and wise Shimada. They train the meek farmers in
self-defense and basic fighting. Its composition, pace, and
action are incredible. Don't miss this cinematic classic. |

Plot Summary:
An American military tribunal convenes in post-WWII Nuremberg,
Germany, to try four German judges accused of crimes against
humanity under the Nazi regime. The proceedings delve into the
extent of individual and collective responsibility for Nazi
atrocities, examining whether the judges were simply following
orders or willingly participating in a corrupt legal system.
Presiding Judge Dan Haywood faces moral and political pressure

"Old Rock of Ages, we've

Why watch this?
One of the best films ever about the US Navy.
Plot Summary:
During the immediate aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor,

reassigned to a desk job following a controversial decision in
battle. While adjusting to this new role, he begins a romance
with nurse Maggie Haynes and attempts to reconnect with his

intensifies in the Pacific, Rock is given a chance at redemption
when he is tasked with leading a crucial and dangerous mission
against the Japanese forces.
| |
Dad's Preview:
This film is not a typical Wayne war movie. It focuses on the
effect war has on the men and women embroiled within it. It paints
a realistic picture of the lives of Navy personnel. Wayne's Rock Torrey can command a ship, but his
marriage failed and his own son hates him. Kirk Douglas' Paul Eddington knows how to get things done, but he
is hiding a
violent temper beneath his easy-going persona. We also see
the savagery
of Naval sea battles, where ships fire huge shells at one
another, causing incredible damage and mutilate the sailors on
board. |

and Deep Dive of Schindler's List
"They came with nothing.
Nothing. And they flourished. For six centuries there has been a
Jewish Krakow. Think about that.
By this evening those six
centuries are a rumor. They never happened. Today is history." –
SS 2nd LT Amon Göth
Why watch this?
... to remember, and not let it happen again - EVER on this
Earth.
Plot Summary:
During World War II in German-occupied Poland, a German
industrialist named Oskar Schindler arrives in Kraków seeking to
make his fortune amidst the war's chaos. Initially driven by
profit, he establishes a factory employing Jewish workers,
seeing them as a source of cheap labor. As the Nazi regime
intensifies its persecution of Jews, Schindler is confronted
with the atrocities of the Holocaust and undergoes a profound
moral transformation.

Dad's Preview:
How do you tell a story so horrible it defies belief? As
honestly as you can. Many films have referenced the Holocaust,
using it as a backdrop. However, no film more directly
confronts humanity's most devastating chapter than this
dark, necessary effort. It recounts fascist Germany's creation of the Płaszów
concentration camp during World War II. The Jews sent there
endured total upheaval, horrible prison conditions and merciless
torture by Nazi camp officials. It was horrific. Director
Steven Spielberg, himself a Jew, had to commit this story to film, and
his effort is a masterpiece on both inhuman depravity and the
courageous human spirit. |

remain true to ourselves." -
Spartacus
Why watch this?
It's the first great gladiator masterpiece.

brutal gladiatorial training in the Roman Republic. Witnessing
the cruelty and oppression of his masters, Spartacus inspires
and leads a burgeoning slave rebellion against the might of
Rome. This revolt sparks a major conflict that challenges the
Roman establishment and its ambitious figures vying for power.

Dad's Preview:
This sweeping epic chronicles the life of Spartacus, a slave,
who
becomes a fiery, yet wise, leader. This drama is superb, painful, and
historically interesting. Kirk Douglas carries much of the film,
but Tony Curtis also renders a strong performance as Spartacus'
second in command. This Kubrick
masterpiece garnered four Oscars. |

veterans.

joblessness, changing family dynamics, and physical disability.
The ex-servicemen must face the emotional and practical

their new realities.

Dad's Preview:
It might be easy to imagine that World War II Veterans returned
home and re-acclimated without a lot of problems. They were America's
Greatest
Generation anyway, right? Of course that was not the case. This film
follows three very different soldiers, all returning from
overseas to the same
hometown. It's a well-written, poignant film that gives
the viewer a new appreciation for the price these servicemen paid
both abroad and back home after the war. |

Dad's Preview:
If you watch only one segment of film from all of Dad's lists,
it has to the first thirty minutes of this movie. It is hard to
watch, but it should be a requirement of everyone daring to call
themselves "American". This amazing war epic focuses on a
mission to find one man in France after the invasion of
Normandy. But the story behind the story is that war can be
confusing, bloody and costly in human lives. Here nothing is held back
- Director Spielberg did his best to
take us there. The ensemble cast is amazing, led by Hanks
and Tom Sizemore's career-best performance.
